Come along as my brother and I conquer the challenging airspace of LAX! We land at one of the worlds busiest airports VFR and bring you along every step of the way. ATC did a great job accommodating us in between all the heavies, hope you enjoy!

Controllers love pilots like you; no delay on the calls, crisp and clean read-backs, and able to hustle across an active runway without hesitation - the controller knew he could count on you to do that, that’s why he asked - if it was someone else, maybe not. Great video Owen! New subscriber.

ATCo from Europe here. You asked yourself, if ATC would prefere you flying IFR or VFR. When you have a slow aircraft between all the airliner jets, you want the slow aircraft as close as possible to the runway threshold, so when you turn the slow guy in, you block the final for the shortest time possible. The easiest way to do that, would be VFR. So yes: From my perspective as an approach controller, I would prefere VFR. Makes things much easier :-)

either way you have to sequence them unless you are relying upon visual separation. wake turbulence still exists.

I worked near LAX in the 1980s and watched planes from my office window. Smaller planes usually came in high but I never knew why. You explained at 16:40 that you were coming in high and landing long to stay above the previous plane's wake, which makes perfect sense and explains what I saw 40 years ago and didn't know the reason for. Thanks very much for a fine video.

As others have noted, Owen brought his A-game and handled the complicated vectors and multiple controllers well. Kudos. But his brother, who is a pilot, seemed more concerned with recording the views with his phone and camera. He should know that during high workload ops even the best pilot can benefit from a little help. At the start of the flight the brother was handling the frequency changes, but he abandoned that to focus on his phone and camera. Owen stepped up and did everything himself, but closing in on LAX he looked a little task saturated to me. So all in all it was a great video of an interesting flight that could have benefited from better CRM.
@harsep
@harsep 2 жыл бұрын
I believe the brother is a private pilot but not instrument rated. So Owen can't really rely on him to much.
@zlindriver7632
@zlindriver7632 2 жыл бұрын
@@harsep Point taken. But the pilot not flying could easily have handled the frequency changes, or the comms, or both even though he was not IFR rated. Even if the pilot flying preferred to do everything himself, the guy in the right seat could have scanned for traffic. I love flight deck videos as much as the next aviation weenie. But I cringe when I see the people in the cockpit giving priority to recording over flying.
@Carterrwp
@Carterrwp Жыл бұрын
@@zlindriver7632 at least Owen wasn’t flying and recording all on his own. He can single pilot. Thousands of people do it every day. Maybe he brought his brother along so he didn’t have to pilot and film ?

@@harsep yea, you can do a lot as a private pilot. So, he’s got a point. Flight was VFR, that’s not a great excuse. Overall cool video but I see what he means by helping out with the workload. Overall, PIC handled it well.
@harsep
@harsep Жыл бұрын
@@PortugueseFlyingStew I had my ppl long time ago but never renewed my medical so the flying stopped. Lost interest after attaining my license and got bored after all the restrictions flying around the LA basin area. Never attempted to fly into lax even though you don't need an IFR rating and it is costly to land there. Landing at Big Bear and Catalina are more memorable moments and almost didnt make it out of Aqua Dulce after not adjusting the mixture for the high altitude that airport was in not doing a runup . Had no power on takeoff and not climping until I realised the fuel mixture was not set for that high altitude airport.

Great video how GA and commercial can operate together. The challenge is with GA community and their ability to integrate seamlessly into an IFR environment. My feeling is that 90% couldn’t integrate without at least an instrument rating.

Seems like these Class B airports don't have an issue with a faster aircraft using VFR it's the slow cessna 172 they have issues with which makes sense. You were able to stay at the same pace as the heavy aircraft.

I have found flying into KATL, that as a GA aircraft (I fly a Piper Dakota) that we just keep best forward speed and are able to slot us in pretty easy. I normally will file IFR and from the direction I typically arrive, I know I am probably getting 26R or 08L depending on winds (closest runway to Signature FBO to get me off the runway and out of the way of the big boys) and I will file to set me up for vectors to final pretty easy. The biggest thing is keeping track of all the frequencies (LOL).

Flew my C182 into LAX several years ago to haul some other pilots from Chino to recover some war birds that were on display at the old West Imperial Terminal. Also did a photo flight using a B-25 as a camera plane back when I was flying second in command in it. I know that class B like the back of my hand. Used to work at LAX back in the 70s and early 80s. Lots has changed since then. I’m surprised they landed you in the north complex since you most likely were going to the FBO on the south side.

I worked at LAX and flew my Cherokee into there just for yuks one time. Too much taxi abuse to do it again though. But it was fun aiming for touchdown 1/3 way down 25L and getting the first high speed. ATC was great. Remember the old commuter terminal / pad where the Bradley building is now. Goldenwest Otters and Shorts skyboxes, and Skywest Metros, and even Cochise Navajos going to the desert. You know back when MD-80s were "quiet." You could get off 25L and climb over the fog bank coming in over the shoreline and go back to TOR VFR. Those were the days.
