remember reading an interview in the Samson fanzine circa 1984 that Pete Jupp said he was fired from Wildlife as he wasn't famous enough.

Why isn’t Steve Overland a household name all over the world? A mystery for The Ages...

He was in our household - sold him our old car.... What a gent and his wife was great...Autographed my tour programme from when I saw them as Wildlife...!

People on this Earth like counterfeits and charlatans not to name names here! But please remember if Wildlife song wasn't worth a damn, it wouldn't have been copied, rearranged, rewritten and then resold! Genius is seldom given credit and always mimicked! This teaches artists and musicians including storytellers to safeguard their work and become familiar, even vaguely with intellectual property rights and protect your work. Because, everyone reading this, if you perform your songs in a band, unbeknownst to you, a former drummer or bassist could take your song, rewrite behind your back and then it could get international airplay and not garner your 1 red cent! People, that is me throwing my 2 cents in!

Did Steve get ANY compensation or royalties from SHOT IN THE DARK? If he didn't it is a big injustice!

No. They ripped them off massively....

@@TheAbandoners I am glad I caught your reply a minute after you posted it! I feel bad that more people are aware of the original SHOT IN THE DARK song that Steve Overland and his brother composed from scratch, by the way, along with the other members of Wildlife! I wonder if Slaughter new about this and gave their album which came out in 1991 which features the song Real Love, the title Wildlife, because it was an inside joke within the music business how big of a flagrant plagiarism of Shot in the Dark had occurred! The only question how much did the Osbourne's know when Phil Soussan brought the idea as a song to Ozzy and how much was reworked and did Jake E. Lee have foreknowledge when composing the solo and chords for the song, as well! I got a great feeling when I was looking up SHOT as a demo! I was shocked, then to find out it was written, originally by another group! It is lots of fun to listen to both songs and pick them apart and try to hear the similarities! Pete, do you do the same? I think it would be an honor to the original composers if Ozzy sang the original version and gave those guys their just due! To credit Phil and Ozzy is playing devil's advocate and while taking the middle road by saying that the Original Sin version was a good rendition as well, while not doing a character assasination for not giving the original composers their just due! In my humble opinion.

@@ianoeder5411 I was around when all this was going on in the 80s and met Steve quite some years after, when I sold him my old car. He was a great bloke - very humble and his wife was really nice too. We had a great chat in the car and all he said was "I was in a band in the 80s. You've probably never heard of them......FM...". I couldn't believe it and told him how much of a fan I was and he signed a programme I had when they supported MSG as Wildlife... After Ozzy nicked this, I just lost interest in him, as there was no justification for not crediting the lads and paying them for it... I love Diary of a Madman and Blizzard of Ozz, but nothing after that really. Saw him at Donington with Jake in 1986 and it was an incredible show, but shame about this.....

@@TheAbandoners Hey Pete that is one interesting account of the goings on back when that debacle happened! We should stay in touch, because this is really a very interesting part of music history! I think it would be extremely intriguing if we could get Steve and his Brother and the rest of the guys in Wildlife and Phil, Jake E. Lee as well as Ozzy to have a unique one time reunion to bury the hatchet and to tell the story of how all this unfolded because it makes for great storytelling, all the while gives a glimpse into the lives of people from a musical background and the Dynamics of storytelling, particularly oral tradition. I have always felt Pete that music is a part of oral tradition, the same way, very much so the Bible, Quran or the Tanakh and Indigenous creation myths were initially passed down through the ages! I feel this is to me, just a more modern example as to how when something isn't written down it is prone to being changed due to memory, minor things may be omitted, while some of the more vital utterances that are essential are passed down, preserving the continuity and preserving the integrity of the original author's intention! I see this wholeheartedly in the song A SHOT IN THE DARK! Even so the song was rewritten and arranged differently than the original. The essence and intended message and the emotions conveyed there in are left intact! I feel that the song has such staying power, we could go back to the Stone age and this song will be sung in one form or another around a camp fire, because the energy and emotions that the song invokes and builds up to is so primal, and so powerful! Talk to you later Pete! Very kind of you to reply! I'm in Arizona by the way! I guess you are in England? Very interesting and awesome to speak with you! Even at a long distance!

I tried transcribing the lyrics from what I could make out in the recorded versions here on KZbin. It's probably 99% accurate, there was maybe 1 or 2 lines I was slightly unsure of, but I think this is correct. It was a cold winter's night, On the wrong side of town, Streets are quiet, the city's sleeping. Gathering clouds to the Beat of the Drums, Came the thunder and the lightning Out in the dark, Like an angel in white, Even the shadows may hide. She's not alone In the wind and the rain Just one look the deal was signed. Pre-chorus: Ghosts from the past Are really vain I had no Choice, In the choice that I Made ----------------------------------------------------- Chorus: *Just like a shot in the dark* *(Lead Vocals)* Shot in the dark (Backing vocals) *Chasing the Night Away* *Just like a Shot in the Dark* Shot through my heart *Taking my breath away* *Just like a Shot in the Dark* Shot in the dark *One more game she played...* *....My Hea--art* ------------------------------------------------------ Bring it! In my hea--art... Days into nights Lapsed into years Except for her Time had no Meaning Feel of the beat, Like an eagle in flight, I knew that soon she would be leaving Pre-chorus: Reason she gave Still don't ring true She was the Hunter, And the Hunted was You! ----------------------------------------------- Chorus: *Just like a shot in the dark* Shot in the dark *Chasing the Night Away* *Just like a Shot in the Dark* Right through my heart *Taking my breath away* *Like a Shot in the Dark* Shot in the dark *One more game she played* -------------------------------------------- [Guitar Solo] Chorus: *And like a shot in the dark* Shot in the dark *Chasing the Night Away* *And like a Shot in the Dark* Right through my heart *Taking my breath away* *And like a Shot in the Dark* Shot in the dark *One more game she played *Like a Shot in the Dark* Shot in the dark *One more game she played...* *....My Hea--art* *....My Hea--art* *And Like a Shot!*

Such a cool song!! Ozzys RIP off was good but c'mon.
@DeanUSAMale2 жыл бұрын
This song was actually originally written by John Sloman (ex Uriah Heep singer/Gary Moore/Praying Mantis/UFO/John Sykes... etc.), Phil Soussan was doing demo's with him and ripped it off...

Do you mind me asking where you’ve heard that, read about that, or maybe even own a demo with some embryo of it?
