As always, very interesting video. I'm humbly gonna take the liberty of republishing a post about this same aircraft that I shared on another channel a little over two years ago. And it's about de service of this aircraft in the Colombian Air Force: 👇 I served for 25 years in the Colombian Air Force as an Officer (not as a pilot but as an Air Defence / Weapons Specialist Officer) until 2016, and in relation with the Colombian Pucarás i can confirm from first hand that three FMA IA-58 airframes were received in 1989 from Argentina in consideration for a coffee debt that was owed since 1980's to Colombia, with the expectation that an interest will be aroused for the purchase of more aircraft of this type. And certainly it arouse...!!!! These three airframes were numbered FAC2201 to FAC 2203 (FAC meaning Fuerza Aérea Colombiana) and were assigned to the Air Combat Command No. 2 (CACOM-2) in Apiay (Province of Meta, Colombia), in the eastern plains and jungles of Colombia. However, they quickly went grounded due to lack of spare parts, and only until the mid-1990's were they put into full operational readiness with the help of technicians from the Uruguayan Air Force, who sent a mission exclusively for that purpose and spent almost six months in CACOM-2. The Pucará outperformed the OV-10 Bronco, which had also been assigned to the same Air Base (CACOM-2) since 1991 (when Colombia received twelve airframes from U.S.A.). In terms of features and performance Pucarás far outperformed them in combating the country's Marxist narco-terrorist organizations, due to their capacity of fire and effectiveness against them. We, all the crews of all squadrons were very excited and want more Pucarás, instead of Broncos (however, over time, we would receive neither). It was only until 2007 that the FAC had a technological renewal of COIN aircraft, receiving 25 brand new A-29B Super Tucano airframes purchased from Brazil, but that is another story. Still, the Pucará also outperforms the A-29B in speed, range and maximum altitude. However, the weakness of this weapon system was its logistics and availability of spare parts, by 1995 the aircraft was no longer in production and the Fabrica Militar de Aviones Argentina, FMA (Argentine Military Aircraft Factory) that built the aircraft was already bankrupt, for which there was no way to produce spare parts, additionally the engine was of French manufacture and the avionics were U.S. made, therefore the flow of spare parts was a real headache with different logistics lines for the same aircraft, which forced to cannibalize one aircraft in order to have the other two in readiness, until reaching the point where none of the airframes were airworthy by the end of1998. From then on, the airframe engines would only be started on the ground once a month by the Chief Technician Inspector in order to mitigate their deterioration, to the point where they will never start again by its own means, and were stowed outside of the apron out in the open. By 2008, i was in CACOM-2 for second time and by then a team of technicians of the Uruguayan Air Force came to collect the airframes (Colombia has sold the three airframes that were on bad condition to Uruguay), not to make them airworthy and put them to flight, but as a source of spare parts for their own airframes, since the Colombians airframes had fewer flight hours, and therefore would have suffered less stress, due to Uruguayans also had the same problem with the flow of spare parts as the Colombians. Regularly when i performed security duties, i passed by the hangar where the Uruguayan technicians were assigned and sadly watched as they disassembled the airframes. Finally, after a month (more or less) they finished disassembling them and took them along, with all the remaining spare parts that were in inventory in the aeronautical warehouse, in five containers aproximately to be transported by semi truck to a port in the north of the country to later be taken by ship to Uruguay. Truly a sad ending for an excellent aircraft that had a brief but admirable exploits in the Colombian Air Force. I hope that this small information about this aircraft in one of the four Air Forces that operated it can serve in some way as a complement to your already very complete video.

Two main german designers lived in Argentina after de WWII: Kurt Tank, who produced pulqui 2 (later hf24 and mig 15) and Remar Horten, specialized in flying wings (see the naranjero "Orange carrier" cargo plane, designed for transporting orange production from north eastr to ports). Remeber Mr. Horten's designs were used in the actual US B2 stealth bomber. Hi there from Argentina, Yes, Pucara was a successfully combat-proven concept. Imitated by the British. Pucara is the "little brother" of the A-10 US-made CAS aircraft. The A-10 was a tank killer and the Pucara was an infantry killer. But the war in Ukraine will forever change everything, see why... The mass number required for NATO air forces to destroy cheap drones and carry glide bombs from 100 km away is now available from both aircraft. The Pucara and the A-10 are a cost-effective way to transport attack drones, glide bombs, and missiles onto the battlefield. The current Pucara Fenix was supposed to be called Pucara de Fronteras. One fact missed in this excellent research: During the Korean War, Argentina designed the Pulqui, it was the most advanced and effective fighter worldwide, together with the Soviet MIG-15. How was it possible? Well because the company incorporated part of the German team after WWII. The rest of the team developed the MIG 15 in Russia. The US wanted to buy the license to Argentina to manufacture the Pulqui. They needed it urgently since it was the only fighter to match the Mig 15. Unfortunately, Argentina didn't sell the license, so the German team went to the US and developed the third brother, the SABRE to beat the MIG 15. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FMA_IAe_33_Pulqui_II

@JAC2060, I'm an A-10 fan & I was captivated when I first heard of the Pucara for a number of reasons. As you said, its mission is similar to the A-10 Warthog. I'd be interested in your opinion of introducing a licensed copy of the Pucara since the USAF is determined to retire all the A-10's & abandon the CAS mission? It would probably have to be upgraded w/US motors & avionics. It would be neat if they upgunned to a 30mm or even 25-27mm cannon. 🛩🔫🤔😻
@JAC206014 күн бұрын
@@ghostrider88jinetedelfanta31@ ghostrider88jinetedelfanta31 Well, both aircraft should be for long-range missions with glide bombs. CAS missions will be only for drones that can saturate manpad missiles or other effectors. Not for manned systems like attack planes or helicopters, no more direct fire support from aircraft in high-intensity wars with near peers. We can see that in the Ukraine battlefield.
@JAC206014 күн бұрын

Back in 21/22 I used to see these operating in Uruguay, except they were painted in gray low visibility scheme, and had a lot more embarked electronics and dents around the tail, it seemed to be used mostly for patrolling the national waters, those seemed to have an anti-sub/anti-ship job, rather than CAS. The British recognised the value of it. As mentioned it was trailed and a concept based on that evaluation developed. Although that was cancelled, RAF trainer aircraft such as the Bae Hawk and Shorts Toucan were modified so they could be used for COIN operations as well as gunnery and weapons training. This came from the British military being on the receiving end of a supposedly inferior aircraft.

"The poor man's Warthog", "The A-10 on turboprops" could be good depictions of this very capable yet economic aircraft. Certainly, this remarcable concept has much more to offer; the new and more powerful powerplant, new avionics and self defense countearmesures, heavier payload, ability to launch and guide smart bombs or air to ground and air to air missiles will put it well above Texans and Super Tucanos; sadly, the production line was closed and many of the tooling was scrapped. It would be a much tempting product for this niche than the above mentioned contendants, due to it's inner volume to accomodate avionics and sensors and because is a twin engined aircraft, which increases enormously it's survivability; such advantages ahould make it a much convenient system for present and future battlefields. But, as mentioned before, argentinians (specially the politicians) not always give the deserved value to their own good products and technical skills. "Pucará" means "Fortress" in a mative indian tribe. Regards from Argentina

@Nicolas-zw5ex It's a real pity that the local industry is historically inadequately funded. The talent is there, but the industrial capacity and sustainment capability was/is clearly missing. I wonder if they will have the budget to upkeep the second-hand F-16s?

Por que esse avião pucara não teve muitas vendas ? Igual o super tucano .

As a Brit, I think the Pucará got short shrift as a ground attack plane. We killed most of them on the ground due to the effectiveness of our special forces, and poor defence decisions of the Argentinians. The plane itself seems a very decent ground attack plane. You don't want anything too fast nor too demanding of take -off surfaces. A decent loiter time is useful, as is a high degree of manoeuvrability. The pilot has excellent forward vision also. Maybe they could have done with a bit more armouring and battle-hardening?

He mentions as quickly as he can in passing about Argentina "hosting" Germans after WW2...Instead of merely saying "Argentina depended on fleeing Nazis for any kind of aerial modernization, and hid them from prosecution in exchange".......Seems it would be more concise to just say that!!!....

Looks like it can carry more payload than the Tucano. Has a very similar wing look to the A10. Those 2 engines provides more power.

As far as I know it was a great plane ...at least... for it's intended purpose. If you build a plane like that you have to be aware of its limitations though.

Lack of avionics to operate at low level or bad weather over malvinas, also lack of modern weapons as air to surface missiles to attack at longer range, or wires for air to air missiles for anti helicopter missions. ..Junta wasnt prepared for a war at all...
