@@caseycoady3063They are mostly the result of polling locations being shutdown and moved at a moment’s notice. In 2022, Lincoln County, GA which has about 8,000 registered voters closed 7 out of 8 of their polling locations which forced some voters to drive over 30 miles to vote. It started a lot earlier than that. Pretty much as soon as the civil war ended and freed slaves were guaranteed the right to vote, southerners immediately started using every trick imaginable to keep blacks and other minorities from voting. Poll taxes, literacy tests, convoluted id requirements, removing ballot boxes near Indian reservations and passing bizarre laws whose sole purpose was to give a reason to arrest blacks to make them ineligible to vote. This wasn't a secret, they were open about it and proud of it. Sen Carter Glass (one of the major proponents of felony disenfranchisement in the early 1900s) said outright: "Discrimination! Why that is exactly what we propose. To remove every n*gro voter who can be gotten rid of, legally, without materially impairing the numerical strength of the white electorate."

@whatsup968
@whatsup968 Ай бұрын
@@pauldecker4630People who are upset with the electoral college point out that under the EC system, one individual person's vote is not counted the same across different states. Would your solution not increase that disparity? For example: Giving Alaska the same amount of votes as Texas would give Alaskans disproportionate voting power Genuine question: why are we focusing on being fair to states rather than being fair to individuals? Because that is how your suggestion sounds to me
@HellaGust
@HellaGust Ай бұрын
@@pauldecker4630 I'm sorry are you actually suggesting that each state have the same number of votes in the electoral college? Making all the states have the same number of votes means that the vote of a person in a state with a small population will count for more than the votes of hundreds of people put together from people in large states. I guess the first thing is to decide whether you feel like "states" or "people" should hold the power in a democracy. But the name is kind of a hint. Political effort should absolutely be spent on making sure that minorities (such as anyone from rural areas) are heard, but there are many ways to enshrine that in law without disenfranchising the vast majority of the population. There ain't no pretty fixes to democracy, and there will never be a perfect balance between individual rights and collective rights, but your idea straight up abolishes democracy, which I feel you really ought to lead with if that's your ideal scenario. It *exacerbates* the problem of people's votes not being equal and presenting it as a moderate alternative to abolishing the EC. But hopefully I'm misreading you and you're not *actually* suggesting democracy be abolished on the federal level. Right?

@@nargaflarga It is helpful. Here in Belgium we also have 2 instances: the chamber (parliament) and the senate. In the past, this created a situation where bills that passed the chamber, were rejected by the senate, just like in the US. This led to impasses and stalling of the legislative branch, just like in the US. The government recognised that it was stalling progress for the country. The senate was not removed, but the role of the senate was reformed. We still have a senate, but the senate can only advise or propose. The senate can not block bills anymore that were democraticly agreed upon. This change made it much more easy to pass much needed laws. Objections to passed laws (through opposition by a political party or by humanitarian instances) are now handled by 2 possible entities: 1 is called Council of the State and the other is the supreme court. They check whether a passed law is in conflict with the constitution or in conflict with other laws or impede on the rights of the citizens).

Georgia actually has a website where you can question other people's registration, which will result in eligible people being kicked off & having to appeal, but likely without enough time to do so before the election. Other states are trying to toss ballots that arrive after election day, even if they are postmarked a week early, while the postal service is run by De Joy, who slows mail processing. getting rid of the electoral college makes sense. Right now essentially it is only 5 states that candidates care about. Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Nevada and Georgia. There are a few other purple states, but how many other states get visits by candidates every cycle? If we go to the popular vote, every state would get a visit. Texas would get visists from Democratic candidates, Washington state and California would get GOP visits. Every single vote would count. Thing is though, GOP won't do it. The Dems have won the popular vote 7 of the last 8 presidential elections.

And there are diversity of people so that doesn’t work, sides if it happens the red states would find their gdp shrink so much that they would be without a lot of stuff and in all honesty, the country is a complex system, on some level you actually, like it or not, rely on the left to clean up messes, economic ones especially, and to also treat people in a way that makes them less likley to riot. The right wing way of treating people is in short term interest of capital while left is long term interests of capital. Capital meaning neoliberal interests who run candidates in both parties. And to beat them we have to recognize how they leverage the fear of culture war as the circus and the dopamine of tech drugs etc, as the 🍞, making the bread and circus to distract you from the fact that they still are acting in ways to make your wage less and it less likley for your kids to have health care and housing and maybe even yourself.. only way to beat them is to recognize the bread and circus and how it prevents us from learning logic and how they manipulate us against each other by amplify the difference to such a high degree we hate each others. The hate is in their interest to, especially when you hate and angry alone at home. So we need to get passed culture war and realize none of that is ever designed to be fixed ever and most of it can’t be because it’s based on genetic or biological characteristics and then you got the fact that the the abortion thing- dosent affect you one bit unless what your concerned about is having workers to force into low paying jobs. Like none of it will ever be solved, because it doesn’t work to make people feel hopeless and traumatized and expect them not to lash back. So it’s a see saw that never goes anywhere. So instead what we need is a party to run candidates in both parties that focuses on the needs on the 90% of the population that owns only 10% of the stock market. And we need to learn how taxes down pay the federal budget and while there is more to this than I’m going into, the gist of it, when the “how do you pay for it question comes up” the answer is “the same way the government pays for everything” We also need a deep nuanced education and way of tracking all elements of inflation. Not incomplete political arguments about how it works. If you don’t understand it all, it often just leads you to make partisan arguments so deep learning on that is neccesary.

Gadfly here 😕. No wonder Adam left the Republican Party. He is against their most basic policy. Deny the vote.🥶😶‍🌫️

Hmm, what do you know, a republican who actually supports American values. Guess that's why they got rid of him.

Actually, it was the Democratic legislature of Illinois who eliminated his district during "reapportionment" after the 2010 census. The GOP didn't "get rid of him" - the Democrats did.
