Glad to finally see a great historical video on FNaF and SFM! As someone who was originally part of the FNaF SFM and Accuracy Modeling scene, its definitely a part of the fandom that's not talked about nearly as much as the history it offers. I think a great followup could be done going over the history of model packs and maps made as each game released. Each time a new creator pushed accuracy forward, it was a huge event amongst the animator fandom to witness- sometimes with leaks and drama surrounding them and the people who would get early access. Also as more games released over the years, there was always a competitive push to create the first, or most accurate version of a character as soon as possible, sometimes before a game even released. A lot of that was also killed with when HW and AR were set to come out, as a lot of creators felt the magic had been lost and using official 3D models was "Cheating", causing most to quit. The community now mainly just consists of people who try to make models that haven't been officially released yet, such as the SB models before SB released, but it basically died after the HW assets were repurposed over a few years into the most accurate incarnation of every character.

if only the dinosaur community had people that made the most high quality accurate models for sfm lol. Would be nice to have that. But yeah there is a lot of model making drama. If you see a model you really like on sfm workshop make sure to download it. For some reason they have a habit of disappearing

I remember playtesting five rounds at Freddy's and the return to Freddy's. It was some seriously scary shit back then, and it all happened without warning. Glub just joined the server and constantly forced the map to five rounds at Freddy's and monitored how we played to make sure stuff worked. I think initially one of the rarer bosses that spawned on the map, golden freddy, was intended to kick players on kill to mimic him crashing the player in the original.
@NaeveSnowsTavern
@NaeveSnowsTavern 2 жыл бұрын
Also, to elaborate on how five rounds and the return to Freddy's played, players would be forced to listen to a custom phone call on spawn and then are tasked with picking up a camera on the desk, this is the only thing you'd have to pick up in game. On pickup, the doors (in the first) would break and the animatronics would spawn on the map. You were required to survive for 5(Maybe more?) Long minutes until 6AM. After the bell rings, you need to Sprint for the exit and win. This was absurdly hard though because these maps were actually really small and the animatronics were rather good at hunting down players through this map. (The game typically spawns the full cast for each respective map, it gets a bit crowded.)

I have always known about GMoD, but it wasn't until FNaF that I decided to get it (back in 2014-2015). I played countless hours of FNaF content on there, which then made me move on to other stuff. I made so many good friends there. Lost some, but still. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have the same childhood I did then. Great video! I still fondly reminisce of playing the FNaF Game Mode on GMoD 7 years ago, so this was a great trip down memory lane. I've animated FNaF in SFM for 6 years now, so in that position I do feel that the final counter-argument might relate only to GMoD throughout the years. The SFM workshop effectively had to go through at least 5-6 bigger model packs that tried to translate the more main big cast of characters to the program, and while it certainly meant that an absolute ton of marginally different assets would land onto the workshop often, sometimes the new big pack made a huge change in the overall presentation and feel the renders produced with them. Even just a bit before the release of Help Wanted and porting of those models to SFM, the community was already 99% there for at least half the entire cast of characters. I feel that no matter what, it mainly speaks to the absolute dedication of the community to try and potray these characters as accurately or otherwise creatively as possible, and to have that be an option to all of the game's fans across multiple art programs. That community still exists for translating characters that either haven't been accurately remade, or even recreating stuff like hoax characters, the canonically existing but never seen characters, or all of the book characters. Still excited beyond believe that these scenes exist 8 years in and that people reminisce about them so fondly. Cheers!

The first ever SFM ever released to the public was for the game Day of Defeat source, the trailer for the game, named Prelude to Victory, was an SFM and the amount of characters featured in the video is far more than what is possible in DOD:S. Its funny to think that a video that starts with a parody of ww2 German TV broadcasts would be the start of source filmmaker, which is something primarily associated with a game about an evil robot teddy bear.

Wow. For so many years I've been thinking if someone can actually make a video about FNaF and Source engine. And now...someone has finally got to this topic. Personally, I think that FNaF had more impact on popularity of Source Filmmaker specifically. Of course its influence on Gmod is unquestionable, but these sfm fnaf animations are more popular, even to this day. These countless sfm animators inspire other people to become sfm animators themselves. Not gonna lie, that's how I got into SFM, because I always wanted to make something great like Maxie, TFCraft Productions, XGBX Dasian and so on. In my opinion, you should make a sequel of this video discussing specifically the FNaF connection and popularization of SFM. Thanks a lot for this video. I absolutely appreciate it, you touched a topic that no one has touched before.

Slender Fortress won't become more popular again until they shrink down the collection of monsters and/or reduce the round timers so that people can revote on what monsters they're getting more often. There are so many monsters that it's pretty much completely impossible for people to face the horrors they actually think would be cool and fun to face. Long gone are the simple days of just having Slender, the Rake, and a few other pop culture monsters steamrolling people in a server. Now there are just no recognizable characters when I get on, just generic ghosts and ghouls that most people have never heard of with probably the most basic abilities and unimaginative constant unnecessary jumpscares. Perhaps they could also divide servers into different categories of monsters. One can only hope.

It's funny you mention this considering that recently we have been trimming down the amount of bosses in general, and in boss packs too (bosses that are used for random selection in maps that support this feature), I'll admit it's interesting to see this idea of it being overwhelming to see so many enemies. Another big reason on why it was needed to have less bosses is to make sure that the bosses that do exist end up as unique as possible, as each boss now serves a more specific purpouse or has unique abilities to make them stand out more. Less bosses also means we code in and create unique updates for them, increasing their overall quality and decreasing the whole "quantity over quality" that was haunting the gamemode for quite some time. We have also been adding a lot of QoL features, new assets, new things that were never done in TF2's modding history, and accessibility too (as lately we have been making the gamemode more easy to play on lower difficulties to make sure that new players can enjoy the game, as the game had a huge difficulty spikes that were horrible to play unless you were experienced enough, however experienced players can vote for higher difficulties to have a similar experience to older times). One big deal about SF2 was how hard it was, a lot of people joined, waited for downloads to finish and then finally play, to then got killed super quickly for simple mistakes, and that alone says a lot (which is something we have actually been working on a lot by adding new mechanics and overhauling the AI of the bosses to make them more fair).
@akdreamer6497
@akdreamer6497 2 жыл бұрын
@@Chillaxowo This is awesome to hear. Honestly yes, a lot of the bosses blended together. So it's good to know there'll be a lot less now with more unique abilities that can be more easily improved on their own. On another note, if you are gonna keep some of the fullscreen jumpscares, I hope they can be animated rather than just still images lol. Not a necessity but it would be nicer.
@Chillaxowo
@Chillaxowo 2 жыл бұрын
@@akdreamer6497 That's planned too, since I don't think that "animated gifs", or as some people say "jpg on my face" are very appealing. lol They only work fine in stuff like Golden Freddy (turns off your camera for a moment). At the moment we are rewriting the jumpscare system alongside the deathcams (now renamed to executions) to include a lot of new features and fix all the issues they had (since right now they were a bit broken sadly, I believe it was from a rewrite of their base that accidentally caused this issue). Once this new system is in place expect more bosses to get new executions and jumpscares.

The bond between FNaF and the Source engine pretty much made me who I am today. I was introduced to Gmod and SFM through it. Eventually leading to me downloading Blender so I can learn how to port models to SFM and Gmod. (Making totally-absolutely-iconic content such as "FNAM Map," "Fredbears Map," and the Diamond-Block-Textured "FNAF World - Scott") Which eventually led to me porting models for a couple of SFM animators at the time (I did the porting work for a handful of custom models in "SFM/FNAF/Music - Light Em Up" animation) I tried getting into accuracy modeling as most FNaF modelers were at the time, though anything I made really was overshadowed by the insane talent of the larger creators save maybe a few I got an early reach into such as Fnaf World - Scott. (Up until a better one was made) I settled down more towards just making models of my FNaF Fan-Characters instead of being accurate and just kept at it. I kept improving my experience with both Blender and the Source Engine. Jump forwards a few years and now I'm pretty much being paid to make models of other people's characters and port them to games like Gmod, SFM, L4D2, VRchat, and Facerig. (I've been focusing a lot more on VRchat recently. Creating a ton of avatars along with a world named "FNaF - New Dawn" with the help of some friends) I can see myself making a full living off this within a few more years and I honestly have no idea what I'd be doing otherwise. I honestly kinda miss the old hype between games during the height of the Accuracy modeling craze. It was fun to compare different creator's versions of the same characters. Especially before a game came out. Seeing just how close different versions of each model was to the original. And how different the earliest version were from the latest versions. Plus the competition between creators to see just who can make the best, most accurate model as early as possible. I've even tried dipping my toes into it for Security Breach. Ending up making a fairly decent glamrock freddy model before the game released based off the trailers... Which is now most commonly used in TikTok filters and Minecraft Squid Games videos... It was a ton of fun!

Creator of Slender Fortress Modified (a public branch of Slender Fortress) here. Very interesting to see that gamemode be talked about where it had an influence on FNaF with the Source Engine. In 2014 the FNaF 1 characters were introduced and then the Five Rounds at Freddy's map itself after all 5 characters were made. Sometime later when FNaF 2 was released, those also had characters however only the toy animatronics, Marionette, Balloon Boy, and Mangle were made, nothing else. Why this was the case I don't know but I have to guess I6N1S got so demotivated from making those models due to the sheer number of demands. Regardless, unlike FNaF 1, FNaF 2 had it's characters and map released close to if not at the same time. Due to the fame that the maps and characters got in Slender Fortress, a server was hosted on Glubbable's where it would only host the FNaF 1 and 2 maps rotating around after X rounds (which I don't remember how many rounds there were per map). As time went on however, both maps seemingly died in popularity and the server hosting the 2 maps only were shut down likely due to a lack of popularity. Whether or not Glub's had plans to do FNaF 3 and onwards I have no idea as I was not around with the team until 2021. Today these maps and characters are hosted on a number of servers, but these are very hard to vote for or find. The go to servers you can find for general content, not FNaF, are District Zen, Disc-FF, and Glubbable's (which will be rebranded in the future). District Zen and Disc-FF both host the Modified branch which is what I work on and Glubbable's which is where the private branch is at where myself, Kit o' Rifty, Chillax, The Gaben, and more all work on together. To summarize the differences of both versions, Modified focuses on creative freedom for creators while the private branch focuses on it's original intent which was to be a horror themed gamemode focusing on horror themed characters or characters that may fit that criteria. Glub's still has Five Rounds at Freddy's and Return to Freddy's, Disc-FF no longer has those maps and characters, and District Zen also has both maps and characters. But yeah thats the very brief history I can give as I am one of the veterans of Slender Fortress.

Considering all of this it has always puzzled me over the years why there hasn't really been any FNaF fangames made with the Source Engine (to my knowledge at least). It seems like it would be a first-choice engine to use for people looking to make their first/game mod, until you consider some of its more antiquated quirks that make it less appealing compared to something like Unreal when you're making something that isn't a glorified Half-Life 2 mod.

People probably don’t remember that it took around a full year for new models of the main four to be created, and it was a big deal. They looked very accurate though nowadays you can their flaws. It took a long time for Springtrap to look good. The 3rd model created for him I remember stuck around much longer. Probably because models 4 and 5 were the first to add the corpse, and it kinda ruined the face. I think Model 3 showed the most important and identifying part of Springtrap, where as the later ones faces were awful to look at. Nowadays model 8 is the most accurate Springtrap model in my opinion.

Honestly, I have an undying respect for the old Splinks FNaF models. That's why I still use them from time to time in GMod, and why they're the models I use for the classics and Toys in SFM

I swear if it wasn't for Fnaf, i would've never found out about not only Gmod, but SMG4 Vanossgaming, and Venturiantale, three youtubers and the game itself is why im not only a Gmod Addon Creator, but a Modeler as well, and i have Fnaf and Scott to thank for that. However even though i love it i couldn't agree more that Fnaf in the Gmod and SFM workshop is becoming overwhelming, Everytime i head to the workshop i can't help but know that almost 70 - 80 of the workshop is Fnaf Models, Dupes, Addons, and whatnot, not to mention the thousands of versions of the fnaf models from Splinks to Steel wools, id would just prefer the models from Splinks, Illumix, and Steel wool, and Dupes and Saves were toned down that's it. but that would be unfair to everyone, all i wish is that fnaf related content would mostly be useful in the workshop other than Useless, after all it created a new generation of fans for the Animation software and the game.

Bro after watching this I just got a flash bang of Fnaf childhood memories of sfm and gmod videos. Like xman and other KZbinrs I always loved watching the sfms and start singing to the sfm songs and stuff. But even though fnaf sfm changed a little bit it still warms my heart that my memories of Fnaf gmod and sfm still live long. And heck that’s what made me be in fnaf and also other videos to but I think it is what made me want gmod and sfm because of these cool fnaf animations. Anyways thank you for bringing back my childhood. Man I am getting flashbacks of the just gold animation. Anyways thank you for this awesome trip of a video 🐻 🐰 🐤 🦊

I've been a FNAF Fan since FNAF 2 but the SFM animations really got me into the fandom.This video really was nostalgic to me and brought me back to the times I used to watch the Old FNAF SFM videos. When most FNAF videos had barely any story and just there for the loss. Nowadays they just have a lot of lore and story to them. All I have to say is that this video took me back.

For Slender Fortress! The FNAF bosses are mainly in there own map. "Slender_FiveRoundsAtFreddys_b5" They function differently from each other (apart from Bonnie and Chica) Freddy is a statue type, you have to keep starring at him. He doesn't move when his being stared at. Bonnie and Chica are chasers, keep running until you lose them. Foxy is a charger type, don't get caught by him or else he'll run at you with max speed Golden Freddy is a static boss type, like Slenderman. Don't look at Golden Freddy or else you'll get killed.

Back when FNAF was the "big thing" I would go onto my phone to watch SFM animations (while avoiding those with admittedly more disturbing thumbnails). After enough time, I asked myself what SFM stands for, which somehow brought me to a compilation of TF2's "Meet the-" videos. It blew my mind that Scout and the other TF2 classes were under my nose as background playermodels.

I don't see people needing to hate on a portion of the Gmod community. Honestly, Gmod is great. I've spent so many different portions of my life on it. Joining as a young child, returning as a preteen, joining back later as a teen, etc. I feel of it the same way as TF2, but with far more variety to it than my merc experience. To a lesser degree L4D2, but that boat has already sailed.... a long, long time ago. Our communities in Source are kinda dying man. We pick each other up. Keep each other returning. Keep the fun alive and real. Whether it be nostalgia chasing, new and exciting experiences in ancient software, or just dumb fun for the sake of it. But... I mean. Just ask the community. Ask Gabe about 3. See how many updates TF2 gets nowadays. Gmod is practically a community workshop updated game, with that being the only real source of major content expansions and patches. TF2 is kind of in a desert. A tropical, populated, and very fun desert, but a desert nonetheless. We need a 3, or at the very least, a good update, then reliable and consistent small updates. I mean, come on man. There's only so many more decades we can keep the dream real man...

Oh hey! Yeah, about Slender Fortress... Glubbable still has ONE server that still runs the FNaF maps and models. It's their EU #1 server that appears in the server browser at around 6:37. However, a lot of the community don't really like those maps because of how small they are with so many bosses active at once.

Oh, hi, surprised to see SF2 being mentioned here, I'm the owner of Glubbable servers and Slender Fortress 2 (the original version of it)! There's some things I would like to correct and point out, but it's honestly a lot to unpack, so I'll keep it simple on the contemporary news at least. We actually still host both Return's to Freddys (FNAF 2) and Five Rounds at Freddy's (FNAF 1), they were never removed from rotation, but sadly due the popularity it got over the years, people are not exactly too fond of them (they got too related to children playing them and since then, and how people felt it they were a bunch of "overrated maps", it kinda got boring for a lot of people), and when they do get played they don't last too much (it's a bit due the skill needed to play said maps and sometimes people just intentionally don't play them correctly causing rounds to not last too long enough lol). I also will say that I would love to give you more insight on everything since I assume it was hard to find any information, there's a lot of behind the scenes stuff that I think it would be nice for you to know that not that many people know about, I can also offer you information about most of the process on how the bosses (that's how we call the enemies in SF2) were created alongside both maps. Feel free to add me on Discord if you want more details: Chillax!#7142

Fun fact in the old fnaf 1 gmod map if you v clip outside you can see a window in a building outside the pizzeria that once you enter shows a man who offed himself with a shotgun kinda makes you wonder what type of storyline or lore were the makers implying i personally think it’s either the killer or a old security guard that worked there and the reason they offed themselves was because they were being relentlessly haunted and tortured by the spirits next door every time they get up in the morning they start seeing things every night they have nightmares of the place eventually it got so bad to the point they couldn’t take it anymore and decided to commit the deed or maybe they got possessed and controlled by the spirits and they made him off himself I would love to hear what yall think it means

I did enjoy the Fnaf TF2 slendermaps but it was a tricky time since it was at the height of Fnaf 2 and either you had kids in the mics or just people trying to avoid playing the maps (possibly since they're always played understandably) kinda sucks they're gone though since the hype is dyed down I could of casually played a round was very hard though then again I'm not great at slender maps

most fnaf animators use SFM because they can't be bothered to switch to blender transitioning from source filmmaker, a shitty cobbled together tool that came from a game engine, to blender, a real and proper 3d animation software that doesn't resemble SFM in the slightest is a bit of a nightmare along with that, there's a lot more complexities with blender that simply don't exist in SFM, such as nodes, physics simulations, more light types, different navigation, etc

I’m into 3D sculpting at the moment and trying to make a single sculpt in blender has continued to be a nightmare, I just use my iPad instead, it’s such a disability unfriendly program. People like me who find learning shortcut keys and specific intricate commands really hard to remember. Not to mention it crashes on me consistently. I’ve given up on trying with it anymore.
