Love your videos but are you somewhere where there's a used engine shortage or just like rebuilding engines? I must have 50 plus good running engines here not on equipment. I really can't imagine having to rebuild one when I can pull a good one off the shelf. Except a kohler k series I need to rebuild. They used slightly different blocks for different applications and I got one where my old engines oil pan won't fit my replacement engine

Reminds me of when my engine disintegrated a rod and knocked a hole through the casing - repaired with JB Weld - and smashed the cam gear. Fascinating stuff, another engine saved from the scrap heap. Thanks for sharing.

Mostly all we need to do is keep the good oil in one and change it when needed and all will be just fine. I check mine every time I use them and when using a generator, usually when I shut them off and when I start them back, just to be sure. Then a change when the oil starts to get dark. And with Delo, being diesel spec oil, it gets dark quicker because of higher detergent and high dispersant qualities than regular oil but that's the life of one and I'd rather be safe than sorry and without. Hope all is well and THANKS!

What grit was your hone? when I rebuilt the 12HP vertical shaft on my riding mower I think I used a 240 grit 3 stone hone to true it up, followed by a few passes with a worn ball hone to get a totally uniform crosshatch after that then used some 400 grit stones on the 3 stone for a finer crosshatch finish. I used a stens ring set with the 3 piece oil control ring and man, they seated fast, and it runs great with no smoking whatsoever. I'm surprised someone went through the trouble to repair that engine like that in the past for a generator. Sure sounds good.

The oil showing on the outside fin by the bolt is a guaranteed sign of a blown head gasket. Its always the number 7 head bolt that leaks compression as well as oil. The reason being that is the hottest part of the engine as well as the thinest part of the head gasket from id to bolt hole.

Just curious, what is the yellow plastic part you reinstalled from the outside of the case?
