Learning how to properly pack a ruck is a game changer. The main reason that you want the weight high and close to your back is to decrease the angle between your center of gravity (CG) without load and your CG with load. Lower and further from the body = larger angle. High and close = smaller angle. That angle equates to the forward lean you’ll exert to bring that loaded CG back above your base of support (feet) to stay stable. A larger angle/forward lean will result in significantly increased energy expenditure and the overuse of some muscles and underuse of others due to the unnatural body position. The closer you can be to a natural, upright body position, the more efficient you will be. Per ATP 3-21.18 Appendix C, a properly loaded ruck can increase energy efficiency by up to 25%. Applying these principles, I was able to increase my ruck pace by about 2 min/mile versus just randomly jamming shit in my ruck. Not being a little bitch anymore shaved off another min/mile, so that helps too.

@@stevej9636 There should be a 4 hour class on how to pack your ruck with repetitive excercises so you get proficient at it. Pack, unpack, pack, unpack. It's a skill that is very undervalued. Not sure about SOI but at MCT they didn't teach us shit. All our NCO's were basically there for holding for some reason or another. It was all f'd up.

Hi Buck!! I congratulate you for your program, it is one of the few genuine ones that provide relevant information without egos with respect. I know that we would like, when you have the opportunity, that you interview a tier 2 navy seal so that people can see the operational differences between the green berets and navy seals since each unit has its strengths and weaknesses. I mention it because during the last decade for Hollywood people believe that the navy seals are the best and that they are all tier 1 and many myths like that. However, the Jsoc based on operational needs is that it deploys one unit or any other.

“Throw my treat in my pocket and I’m ready to step off” Honestly the most important part. 10 miles in, morale is in the gutter, energy is nonexistent and you remember about the deliciousness in your pocket. I used to bring sandwich bags full of sour patch kids, and I’d keep one of those along with the chocolate bar from our imp’s (Canadian mre) in my pocket.

Great Advice from someone who has been there and got the tee shirt! But. Rather than flat plates, which don't replicate a realistic load at all. Just do what we did in the British Army pre SF Selection which was to make a number of sand filled bags and tape them down so they formed solid bricks. About a kilo per brick. Like you we filled the back pack with sleeping bags and kit and the added the sand bricks and bottles of watter to add weight in the right places. To mimic where the weight should be. Doing it that way ment the load was scaleable and it was cheep ... didnt need to buy engineered gadgets. Or take plates from the gym just dirt, trash bags and gaffa tape. Train hard fight easy ... once your fittnes is up and your back and legs are strong, allways train with a bag that weighs more than the max weight carried on selection.

I used to work for an ALICE contractor. We made only the packs & waterproof bags. They seemed like Disneyland compared to the ruck/haversacks I experienced only a couple years earlier. I don't think the pack can be blamed for the frame design. The frame can be improved all by itself. I understand there are foreign made frames on the market also. Maybe I'll buy one. I have an unused pack from the factory. We also made MUST medical tents, inflated reconnaissance boats etc.

Hey Buck, I think a good tip (and video) would be going over the SFAS packing list and literally packing it into the bags (rucks, a bags, etc.) things like avoid “ranger rolling” gear to save time on the initial shakedown. I know a lot of applicants would appreciate it.
@RedM4a
@RedM4a 2 жыл бұрын
hey was looking for some clarification. are you saying its better not to ranger roll when you get there so cadre can search you more easily, or not to ranger roll at all to save space on the rucks?
@AlwaysPeacefulMaDeuce
@AlwaysPeacefulMaDeuce 2 жыл бұрын
@@RedM4a I’d imagine that if you did ranger roll your gear, you’d have to take it all apart during the initial layout/inspection but I don’t know. I’ve read the cadre do a very detailed shakedown and to me it would seem effort wasted to ranger roll gear. I want Buck’s take on this.

Any advice for keeping my shoulder straps from cutting off circulation to my hands….my hands swell up nearly twice their size and go numb. I use my sternum strap and cinch it down to keep the straps off my arteries to avoid this but its not doing the job.

You pack backwards. I pack weight at the bottom. Top heavy is strenuous and unstable...negative.

When you did rucks did you use the zipper seperator in the molle ii? I always used them but idk if its better to just stuff it in. By seperator i mean the inside zipper that creats a sleep system pocket

Why when you come in country you arrive with everything. But when you go out on Patrol or Missions you barely carry most of the stuff? My brother said hell he was the new guy but he was the only one with a puncho on everyone was looking at him crazy😕😂🍺
