I was there when Maude Boate (Michael Gates) invented these foam style wigs. All of the materials came from an industrial waste/offcut facility called Reverse Garbage. Basically we were all so broke we didn't have money for anything so Maude came up with this to cover the cost of 'wigs' for herself and then for production budgets. She probably started making them in 1993 as far as I remember. Of course Stephan Elliott stole this and a lot of stuff off us for Priscilla the movie. Then much later Maude got the contract to make the wigs and headpieces for the long-running stage production of Priscilla so what goes around, I guess.

Thank you for sharing this story! I find it so fascinating that foam wigs were invented out of necessity, and made from sustainably sourced materials.

Lizzie Gardner was coming to Seattle to give a lecture on her designs for, P,QotD, and a friend of mine was working at the museum that was sponsoring the event, so I decorated the lobby of the theatre the presentation took place in. The largest wig is about 3’ in diameter. I use backer rod, and weld it together with a heat gun.

I enjoyed watching this video. I've seen some of the better known drag artists wearing these and had so many questions about the construction but i see that they are basically sculptures. I applaud you talent🙏. Please stay safe and be well.

Thank you very much thats lovely to say. Yes they are very much sculptures, I would also say there are many different ways to go about making one. This one was only my second and I myself am still figuring out what is the best way. A good tip for prop making is that theres no wrong way to make a prop 😁

She’s gorgeous! There’s a water based, odor free contact cement from Worthen Industries called, Worthen Formula 1812 (like the Overture!)! They don’t ship it in cold weather, and l don’t know if they have a distributor in Europe…I’m glad to see you wearing a respirator and gloves!

WOW this is AMAZING!!! I wonder if it's possible to create a base of that spray foam and then glue hair on top of it? Or if it's just better in that scenario to invest in a hair cage?
