What is the tempo on the instrumental parts of this performance? I'm not very good on the notes part, but it sounds like 4 beats per measure.

Was this drummer Pierre van der Linden's last gig with Focus in 1973? I've seen the rest of this program, and all of the other themes were played far too fast that night. The result is that Pierre could only keep time and scarcely do any fills or syncopation. This may have been deliberate by the other band members to either force him out, or to make him play more simply. They (wrongly) thought they would be more successful with a simple 2 and 4 in a "rock" drum beat and didn't want that jazzy swing sound anymore. It was a great mistake to lose Pierre over such a foolish notion (which was upheld by Thijs, Jan, and Bert in printed interviews in 1974). The result was that Hamburger Concerto and Mother Focus failed to chart, and those albums did not spawn any hit singles as well. Pierre rejoined the band briefly for some 1975 live dates, but not again until the 2000s. The current lineup sounds great and plays at reasonable tempos.
