Sand it first. Removes the remnants of the factory clearcoat. Without that step, end result will still be slightly cloudy due to clearcoat residue.

Dan, this is so COOL! I was trying to polish my lights up with cordless drill, small brush and toothpaste. Did get improvement … then thought I wonder if anyone has tried a heat gun. Thanks for posting, man.

*This technique is actually far better than those headlight restoration kits because the headlights won't fade or yellow again. It smooths the headlights better than the factory OEM. You're not supposed to point it directly at the headlamps but aim it at a bit of an angle so you don't get those burn spots. Be patient as you work your way around it, being careful not to damage the auto paint, which can peel off or bubble up.* *It helps a great deal if you put a shield between the heat gun and the paint. Hold the shield with your hands so you can move it around. A steel drywall scraper works great for this.*

It will go bad faster this way actually.

@@ohfknowned239 *No, it will last the life of the car since you sealed all the tiny micro-openings with the heat gun. And, for those who are not sure can use protective UV film which will last forever and protect the lens from any chipping.*

@@radicalrick9587 Nope Been doing this for 25 years I know all the tricks. Heat gun will weaken it and crack easy with rocks and debris . Also now have to treat it many time more to stop more oxidation because you damaged the surface area.

@@ohfknowned239 *From my experience watching others, especially in woodwork, years of doing something doesn't mean a person is doing it right. I watch a person sand a piece of furniture wood the wrong way and he's been doing it that way for years. After correcting him, he couldn't believe the difference. My headlights have never yellowed, faded nor cracked anymore and I live in Tucson, AZ where it is super hot, lots of loose gravels and rocks, and it's sunny all the time. No better place to test and prove if a headlight project works or not.*

My dad just told me about this technique and it seems far easier than getting the buffing kit. Cant wait to try

I'd like to see how it's doing in a year or so as I've come across several videos from people who used this treatment on different plastics and they were not happy after 7 or 8 months but nothing on headlights yet 🤔🤞

Flame polishing. Mapp gas is how you polish the edges of acrylic, and I’ve used it many times to take out scratches on the surface.

Pretty cool. I've used this method for the textured body plastic, the stuff your particular front bumper is made of. It's not perfect, but it really freshens that particular stuff up. Give it a shot if you haven't already lol
