In addition to clothes that are somewhat different from what I'd find at home, can also often find souvenirs from that area for cheap - like Disney t-shirts and knick-knacks while shopping in Florida, Eiffel tower stuff in France, etc. Sports stuff from the local teams is pretty much a guarantee, for way less than you'd pay at the stadium- and sometimes they're real vintage items!

Ahahaha, good point with a cookbook - if it isn't filthy, it's not actually being used 😂😂 I was just telling the other day that I kept my grandma's cookbook from 1951, the pages with sweet recipes are almost torn out and covered in lot of stains - because my grandmother sweared the recipes from that cookbook were the best, and only those were prepared for celebrations 😅

My late Mum used have a book that some nuns gave her when she was expecting me, that I think was published in the '30's. It was perfect for the resourceful housewife (definitely, _wife_ ), with chapters like 'invalid cooking' and so on, but it was definitely of another age. A pre~CJD age, for sure... Probably had a chapter called "Beef or Pork - which gelatin for pastry making..." Definitely your go~to if you're into foods like braun, drisheen, or calfsfoot jelly. I'm making myself queesy just thinking about it! Perhaps a sausage sandwich will settle my stomach...

@richiehoyt8487 Mine too has advice, like how to cook milk, what a housewife needs to do if it boils over, how to make soap from animal fat, .... A testimony of how people lived back in the time 😊
@richiehoyt8487
@richiehoyt8487 7 ай бұрын
@@korky0104 Oh God! My mother was always boiling the milk over, and of course our cooker was one of those ones where the rings were these spiral coils so the milk could get all down in the workings! 🫢 There's plenty things I've smelt since that are a lot worse, but burnt milk sure makes a stench you don't forget in a hurry. At least we didn't have one of those finicky gas cookers! (Though at least with gas you've _some_ chance of catching it. Milk is one of those treacherous substances that are like the theory of cosmic inflation... It waits for the very moment you take your eyes off it and expands to a gajillion times its original volume in the blink of an eye!) Soap making though! Wow! Could it _get_ more old school?! (Or more up~to~date, maybe, with the trend for these artisanal, 'hipster' soaps...) Shouldn't be surprised if that was the book Mrs. Beaton was using before she wrote her own! I wouldn't be that surprised if it told you how to slaughter, dress out and butcher the animal as well! Things really _were_ 'real' back in them days, though, wha'? Back around the time of the Millennium, I was living on this fairly obscure island on the West coast where there were people who, if they didn't do this themselves, they certainly would remember their parents going for supplies... flour, animal feed, etc. - on foot; they would wait for the low spring tide, wade out to this neighbouring island, hike across the bogs there to the far shore, wade from there to the mainland, and from there overland, 10 or 15 miles to the nearest village... And then, the same thing in reverse, with heavy sacks on their back. 2 day job, sleeping out in the elements. Ah Sure, we don't know were born! Ayup, grand stretch in the evenings... Ah yeah, that's that bug that's going around... 😉 Sorry, came over all "In me fadder's time -- " there! Maybe "Ireland's Own" could do something with it...

When my siblings and I were either out on our own, or shortly expected to leave the nest, my mom ordered new editions of her 2 favourite cookbooks for us - the Five Roses cookbook (a brand of flour) for baking all the bread, cookies, etc you could ever want, and the More with Less cookbook also for baking but also everything else (mostly simple and cost effective recipes, contributed by Mennonite missionaries, with sweet little vignettes and reflections about living lightly on the earth). I think they're both still all of our favourite cookbooks - a few more have been added to the favourites section in the 30 years since then, but I still reach for those two the most often!
