I ordered the Kawasaki Dream Deathmatch tourney here when it came out on VHS . Me and my buddy in whom I got into Japanese wrestling basically so he could order tapes with me from RF Video to make it cheaper to buy in bulk ! We were both excited to see this show as neither of us had seen a thumbtack match as it was brand new basically then . And my buddy actually asked me " I wonder how they are gonna fake thumbtacks ? There is no way they will use real ones . " I just said to him " Bro , look at who is in this tournament , tacks ,barbed wire and explosions will be real ! " He still didn't believe me . And then the tape arrived and we watched it and both our jaws dropped . His more than mine lol ! When Nakamaki powerbombed Ono into the tacks with like 30 buried in his skull , my buddy tapped out lol ! He couldn't watch the rest of it .

Glad to say I had the tape years before the re-released crappy ICP audio commentary. I've heard of the tournament through ECW, saw b&w photos in those wrestling magazines, but when they showed clips during the Mankind/Jr interview in WWF, I had to search for that tape! I basically traded a copy of The Beatles Let It Be movie (which remains out of print since '81) for a copy of King Of The Death Match Tournament.

Foley IS the death match king. Matt Cardona, is merely an Indy Death Match Prince. That shadow from Foley’s Deathmatch career will never be surpassed; Mick Foley/Cactus Jack and Terry Funk are synonymous with the words ‘death match’ and made that style of wrestling globally known. No disrespect to Matt Cardona, but he’ll have to continue doing death matches into his 60s for me to even consider him a contender for that title.
