Vintage Footage of a British Seaside Town - Folkestone. Here's a great vintage film of Folkestone, which is a port town on the English Channel, in Kent, south-east England. The town lies on the southern edge of the North Downs at a valley between two cliffs, not far away from Dover.
A Great Film of an old English town, the way it used to be in the 1960's !

Great footage. As a child in the 1960's, I used to holiday in Earls Avenue for three weeks every summer, until 1970. It was a hugely enjoyable and charming place, with a Victorian riviera feel to it. It's evident that successive town planners and inwardly focussed developers have systematically savaged and demolished so many beautiful and magnificent buildings, terraces and hotels and put in place some really shocking edifices. The Victorians really knew how to design grand buildings, stylish gardens and amenities. They'd probably weep buckets if they saw the town now. Sadly you can't undo what's been done and the wealth structure that Folkestone was built on appears long-gone.

Footage is definitely pre-1960. At about 6.00 it shows the (then) three pubs at the Harbour. The one on the right (Harbour Inn) was demolished in 1957 and rebuilt. Footage after 6.30 is Canterbury, and later, Dover. Great little film.

Great vintage footage, but credit must be given to Canterbury Cathedral and Dover?

They decimated the lovely town and surrounding areas in the late sixties and seventies, more damage done than even the bombing in ww2! And that's not even joking!

Good video, I lived in Folkestone for a couple of months in 1995. What went wrong after the early 60's until around the mid 70's and stayed Wrong still until now! People has changed!

Many memories there for me. Thanks for sharing. Made even better with one of my favourite pieces of music: Orpheus in the Underworld - Offenbach.

Great place in the 60s, music club wise. It is fighting its way back over the last 10 years from the effects of the tunnel

Hello there, I love this footage and I've noticed you've got a few videos on your KZbin channel that includes Folkestone from the 1960s. My name is Syd and I'm a Kent based filmmaker. I'm currently working on a video project for Folkestone Council that celebrates the past but also looks to the future of Folkestone and what is being done/can be done to keep the area thriving. I'd love to use some archive footage in the project, and yours is perfect! Would this be of interest to you? If so, can I get an email to discuss more and hear what kind of credit would be required to use some aspects of your archive?

Memories of my childhood in Folkestone and Hythe in the 50's and 60's have come flooding back from seeing this. I remember my brother breaking his arm when he fell off the rocks on the Zig Zag; diving off the harbour wall into the outer harbour, when the tide was in of course; getting stuck in the mud in the inner harbour, when the tide was out; Saturday morning roller skating sessions in the rink next to the Rotunda. I remember living in Charlotte Street, London Street, the lower of the two houses on The Bayle Steps, Cheriton Road and West Parade in Hythe. I visited the area a few years ago to look at old childhood haunts but unfortunately was very disappointed in the condition of Folkestone town centre, the beach and the harbour areas. I wonder if anyone remembers Elliot's Dairy and shop on the corner of Charlotte Street and Dover Road?
