Saw this production on Broadway… Fourth row orchestra… Very very close second to Hamilton as my favorite night ever at the theater. And I’ve seen a lot of theater having luckily grown up in New York City. I even saw Angela Lansbury‘s “Gypsy”....Unfortunately I was only 16 and didn’t truly appreciate it I don’t think. Youth is wasted on the young! Ha ha…God I loved this production. Thank you for posting so very much…

@@vfa9761 didn't say that it was my favorite musical… Said it was my "favorite night ever at the theater." I was at Hamilton the night Mike Pence was there… you want an electric evening in the theater? The cast speech at the end wasn't even half of what happened in that theater that night. But thanks for sharing.

Yeah. I winced at Hamilton too. I would go with Sunday. Or Company. Maybe Night Music. Sweeney, the masterpiece. Pacific Overtures was like seeing a living Artwork, as was Sunday. Even Merrily had good music, the same premise, youth is wasted in unbridled optimism. Cabaret was ingenious, entertaining and dead serious. I've seen more Mama Roses on Broadway than Desirees or Sally's or Dots. My first off Broadway musical, on the skids of the Bowery, was Dames at Sea, also ingenious, a cast of hundreds played by six actors, one of whom was Bernadette Peters, as Ruby. Falsettos in all its iterations was captivating.

I remember when Susan Watson was the ingenue in NO, No Nannette in the early 70's. I bought the cast recording of Dames at Sea with Bernadette in the late 60s. I got to see her at the Booth in Sunday in the Park....... I was lucky enough to see Elaine Paige in London in the summer of '78 in Evita I must confess I was obsessed with her. Thank you for posting this legendary show. It is so wonderful see all these divas still mesmerizing their audience.

How much do I love this show, well, a lot! I saw it 6 times at The National in 2017, I think, with, amongst others Janie Dee Tracie Bennett and Imelda Staunton. The haunting operatic voice of Josephine Barstow will remain forever in my head. in 2019 they revived it and I saw it 4 more times! Not ONCE did I see an empty seat and The Olivier seats 1,150 people. My two favourite Broadway Babies have to be Elaine Stritch and Jane Houdyshell. Wonderful. The whole cast were terrific but a special mention for Zizi Strallen who’s sisters Summer and Scarlett are so talented too. They’re Bonnie Langfords nieces. I love a big musical. Now lockdown is ending I’ve got my tickets for Anything Goes, Hairspray and Les Mis, the concert, again! I can’t wait.

Thank you for posting this. It’s an exhausting show for audience and cast alike, but there were smart decisions here. I love how in “Too Many Mornings,” Ben and Sally are often singing to the ghosts of their past instead of the reality of their present.

In the original staging, John McMartin's Ben sang the first half of the number embracing Marti Rolph's Young Sally, as Dorothy Collins' Sally mirrored the movements apart from them facing out. Indelible.

They didn't even have a platform for the "ghosts" to enter on. This revival was better than nothing, but you can see from clips of other productions that it was missing what made "Follies" a legendary show.

I saw this production on Broadway. The National Theatre production in London directed by Dominic Cooke a few years ago was far superior. The attention to detail, Vicki Mortimer’s sets, Bill Deamer’s choreography and movement, the fabulous cast down to the smallest part was superb. It came back for a second run the following winter. I saw it at least six times at the Olivier.

Follies is my favourite Sondheim musical-I’ve seen it in various productions all over the world but agree that the recent production at the NT was the best-I was so lucky to get a 15pound standing room ticket and then slip into an empty ‘no show’ seat-a brilliant evening!

@@1868foxpoint The NT are re-releasing their filmed NT Live! performances for a small fee to steam.. Sadly, Follies - which did have a live transmission to cinemas in Britain and abroad when i was running at the Olivier - is not on the list. Perhaps we should petition them! I expect they may a a copyright issue with 'film rights' though I don't imagine Sondheim would object for a limited release esp if it helps out the NT's current budget crisis. I do know however that Dominic Cook was earmarked to direct a new film version before the pandemic stuck.

As great as the choreography for "Who's That Woman?" is, they missed the point in this revival. Bennett's dance for the original production included the young "ghost" of one of the older women who had died before the reunion which they are supposedly celebrating.

Yeah, there wasn't even a platform for the ghosts to come in on. This production succeeded only because it was better than no "Follies" at all. The original, and much of the famous Paper Mill Playhouse revival, show why the show is legendary.

Sondheim writes brilliantly multilayered shows, I watched the most recent revival in London 3-4 years ago and the ghost aspect of “who’s that woman” was completely absent. I’m glad you told me about it, it makes much more sense now.

Yes. Unfortunately, FOLLIES without Hal Prince and Michael Bennett steering the ship is a tough journey. Also, I understand that no one is likely to spend the money they spent the first time around, but believing you can produce FOLLIES with a tame budget is also a problem. I realize it takes place in an old theatre which is about to be torn down, but the show celebrates the era of the Follies that was all about dazzling the audience with stunning visuals. Starring at a flat, gray stage all night and bringing down some tinsel for Who's That Woman ain't gonna cut it. Last, the biggest issue with reviving the show is casting. I didn't get to see the original (I was 8 years old when it opened), but I've read and watched and listened to everything available - and I've seen many subsequent productions, including the two Broadway revivals and Paper Mill Playhouse's mounting of the show. The issue is that anyone who had a career in vaudeville, burlesque and/or the Follies is of course gone now. The particular brand of magic the original cast delivered came from a knowledge and an experience of a time that very, VERY few actors - even the best of the best - can deliver with expertise and authenticity now. In my view, like A CHORUS LINE, it's near-to-impossible to mount a TRULY great production of this stunning musical (it goes without saying that Sondheim's work is overwhelmingly masterful for this score).

@@RobertBurns71405 She is like the proverbial "drunk white girl dances". And the poor choreography does not help. The music is slowed down several times in order for her to dance intact at all. Janey Dee did much better. Considering none of them are using Michael Bennet's choreography.

Nice, BUT---PALES in comparison with the Original! These Actors, though good in their Own right; Have and show Absolutely NO true concept nor depth of understanding a Damn thing of what a 'Ziegfeld Follies' girl was in a then and now, interpretation. Not amateurish in their characterization, just High School-(ish), The Original performers, DID had and possessed a '1st-hand' generational memory of the times they were portraying. Goes to show, how the further from the Mark--newer generations of Performers cannot replicate the Past reality or essence of 'Things Remembered', just Mimic.

So, to clarify, let’s not revive glorious shows specifically because the current performers cannot utilize period-based knowledge that their peers of 40 years prior could. Great logic.

I'm sorry, but another badly hand-held audience phone recording is, simply, yuk. There is NO enjoyment from such recordings. Anyone who experiences musicals from phone recordings gets absolutely no idea of what it is to really experience a show. Add in the poor audio (due to distance) and the shaky vision, honestly, forget it. If you want to have this recording as a reminder of your visit to the theatre, then ok. I note that positive comments are from people who do know theatre and they're making comparisons. Other comments like, "Awesome" simply make me sad for such low expectations.
