That wasn't a bad price at all for a dealer! Sometimes it's better just to hand a job over for the sake of your sanity:) Good diagnosis Ivan!

Coming from an Audi dealer tech, I wish more independent shops knew when to bow out on stuff like this. Not saying independents are inferior, etc.; it's just that, like you said, these cars are often wiring nightmares (two starter relays on the mid 2000s Audi 4.2L lol) and often require special tools. It's no fun when a car gets towed in from another shop with relays and fuses on the floor. Leave it to the hyper-specialized Euro techs with boxes full of tools that would be useless on every other car on the road.

I'll gladly diagnose it, but the actual repairs can get messy lol

AWSOME DIAGNOSTICS.

Having replaced the clutch on a six cylinder BMW a few months ago I can say that swapping a starter would be a horrible job. It bolts on (with ultra tight inverted torx bolts) from the bell housing side with a rusty dowel to deal with. In my experience it's the diagnostics that dealers can be bad at.

A dealer installed a customer supplied part? That doesn’t happen often.

Bring your own parts? That's a no go at most independent shops and a def no go at any dealer around here. Miss you out here on the island my friend

The timing chain will disintegrate in July, at which point you'll be called back to look at it. A cursory inspection will reveal a host of suspension components need replacing. Dealership cost: One healthy adult kidney, a firstborn male child or indoctrination into the Skull and Bones society whereupon a blood oath will be forced.

Another happy owner arm on window shades on thinking how cool he looks in the BMW the ultimate driving machine lol. Just a bit lighter in the wallet but hey if you think you look cool who can put a price on that! Nice work Ivan.

That's definitely not a San Francisco bay area dealer quote..a customer brought a similar BMW to my shop for a starter. The dealer wanted 1500...yikes..what's the labor rate in that area?

You could simply buy a CTA Tools 7643 BMW Crankshaft Seal Removal Kit, you can get it for around ~ 400 usd and fix bwm yourself, like that maybe you would not make a large profit or even nothing, but you would left with tool kit for next job.

Eh! Ivan, you made the right choice I would've passed on this job to someone else, not worth buying tools that will never be used again unless it ends a comeback, now guaranteed no comebacks oh well lol 😎

Yea, I hate BMWs, in the 1930's Germany made great products, but not now. $1000 for a crank seal and a starter, it seems some folks are made of money.
