Great video. Did Madigan last year supported and camped first night at Camp 5. If I remember right it was a left turn and 100m down a track. Easy to miss!

did the simpson in 20 litres on my crf300 fully loaded, although that 30 litres less fuel weight is still there hidden away in that big fat red pig compared to the ktm 500

The one issue [ as with many other bikes ] is the carrying of fuel. I have a mate in Europe on constant watch for a second hand set of "rear rally tanks" for my EXC. Too exxy to buy new, but 14/15 L or so tucked away at the rear would be nice.....

In Europe you're rarely more than 100 km from a gas station. I have the same tank as Keith and most people just shake their head at me "needing" 400 km range. I kind of regret not getting a 12 liter tank and using a bladder for longer rides. :)

It certainly had been done before and it's worth noting Madigan couldn't manage it without a "black tracker". Those so-called explorers discovered nothing.

I hate to say this but by overloading the 500 with so much weight you are negating any advantages of having a light adv style bike and the handling is way worse than say a Tenere with that weight on it. You’re using the wrong tool for the job.
