I've found buying only the books I'm gonna read soon very helpfull, it could be hard not getting some others but they'll probably be there, covered with dust for months, even years. I do exceptions but just if I know the book is getting out of stock, I'm from Mexico and sometimes, when that happen, we won't find the book anymore for reasonable prices and some non famous books go out of print for several years (decades in the worst scenario).

Not a prolific reader by any stretch of the imagination. Gave up fiction many many years ago, have only been reading non fiction, biographies, true crime etc etc but havent sat down to read a good book in over 10 years now. Been scratching away at a little project of my own.. very slowly, but soaking up all the scifi/fantasy podcasts etc getting drawn back into GoT and all things Tolkien. So i needed to find the right book for inspiration.. dark, adult themed, underworld but still fantasy.. have a thing for Asian gangster films and martial arts so yeah, Jade City ticks a lot of boxes and came highly recommended. I'm now 3 chapters in and enjoying the ride so far... looking forward to seeing where it goes and the raved about action sequences

Okay, so after taking some time to digest this trilogy, I still have seriously conflicting feelings about the story over all. The first book was just absolutely breathtaking, but the sequels just felt way too dry for me, and I think this was in large part because Fonda Lee had set up her world in such a way that the international economic impact of Jade and Shine became a huge focus of the story. And on the one hand, I feel like I can't fault her for feeling a need to explore this, and I even appreciate the way that she kept the crime family dynamic when she did it. But the way that she had to tell stories across years in Jade War and decades in Jade Legacy made it so much more difficult for me to connect with these characters. In the end, I either actively hated them, was tremendously disappointed by them, or just found them irritating. At the same time, the richness of the world, the relatable nature of many characters, the way they followed branches of logic that made perfect sense from their own perspective, the way some characters had experiences and principles and bonds so foreign to me that I struggled to understand them -- Wen in particular, the way she could suggest executing Bero without batting an eyelash, but also Hilo's daughter, who came off as psychotic, unstable and insufferable -- were in many respects a breath of fresh air.
