I did 3 quilts without instructions or KZbin like this and sew by hands! The last was 6 years ago and I stopped. At spring, You on KZbin taught me how , cutter, etc. And I began again!! So I am a newbie but better than 6 years ago.

I am rewatching these two tutorials because my sewing machine has a broken tensioner so I want to hand piece a table runner project I got for my birthday. I hand pieces a quilt top 25 -30 years ago, but have not since. This has been a great review, especially the part about doing a back stitch every 3-4-5 stitches. I was not taught to do that previously, but it makes a lot of sense! Thank you!!

I learned to piece by hand many years ago when my sewing machine was in storage (international move). I had needle and thread, old pieces of fabric which I cut into small enough squares for the pattern and dove in! It was relaxing, fun, satisfying and beautiful. I vowed never to quilt on a machine again but became impatient with the amount of fancy quilts crammed out by other quilters. Must pick this up again. You are an incredible duo. Thanks for this video.

You two are so awesome. Mary, as much as I love watching you, I love it even more when your Mom is with you. She's fabulous and she makes you even more fabulous! Thanks Marianne, great lesson.

I first learned to make a quilt with hand-sewing back in the mid-eighties, but I do not remember my teacher talking about back stitching when you begin each little run. I learned something new today. Thank you!!

When I hand-piece, I like to do my running stitch in both directions so the hand sewing actually looks like it has been machine stitched. This way, when you press the seam open, there are no little visible "gaps" from the front as I do find with the standard one-direction running stitch hand piecing. It takes longer, but I think it's worth the time! (Especially useful for small shapes like hexies and diamonds or small triangles).

I always said I didn't/couldn't ever have the patience for hand piecing/quilting, but the more I learn about it the more interested I am getting and really want to try it!

Thanks. Looking to do a quilt soon, just cutting out squares. This is helpful if I decide to do by hand.

I am always looking to do things that are meditative.. and have played around with doing some crazy quilting hand piecing.. BUt I didn't realise about the running stitch OR what thread or needle worked best.. I was doubling my thread... and doing backstitches singly.. ugh.

Here's a coincidence .... I bought a hand piecing pattern from my local quilt shop in Gardenvale owned by Jen Kingwell. I thought I would check out some vids for some tips and you have a Jen Kingwell pattern 'Gardenvale' behind you. Yay!!

You don’t sew it with the "machine stitch " ?? Always with back stitches!! Don’t tell me that I was able, it was OK to stitch like this?? It’s so more quick! As sometimes I continue to do some by hand, now I know!!! Lol!!

My grandma taught me to sew when I was 7, including how to tie a knot. I didn't know it had a special name ha ha. I thought everybody tied their knots like that lol

newsflash....handpiecing has been around since early times. I still consider it the gold standard. Anyone can machine stitch. Handpiecing is an art. It is rewarding, and relaxing.
