The role of food allergies in atopic dermatitis is an important issue for both patients and their clinicians, and brings up an interesting discussion, Peter Lio, MD, said in an interview at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology. Learn more at www.mdedge.com.

My daughter has severe eczema that I’ve learned to control with time. I gave her bread w/ peanut butter when she was 6mo in hopes to prevent her from developing an allergy. Sadly, she had an allergic reaction that day. Following her reaction, we did a prick test and found that she has the typical eczema allergies: eggs, peanuts, tree nuts & milk. I’ve reviewed information from differing eczema organizations, did every possible treatment. For months I had to use the hydrocortisone every day, but now I am managing to use it once/ twice a week. I had no idea this disease would be such a huge struggle in our lives, but I’m happy that she is doing much better these days. *ps. I’ve also only ever breastfed her since birth. (I’ve heard a lot of people say that it happens bc of bottle feeding)

AS guy here... I thought so, too - but it not related to breast feeding vs. bottle feeding. They now know that It is a defect on Chromosome #18, and there is presently little or nothing we can do to change that. I do keep my condition at bay with a restricted diet, lots of sports (including showers) and a balanced life style. No smoking, no liquor, no sweets, no junk food. Beer is okay, thank G*d. Staying positive is also a big part :-)

In india we use oil massage when they are babies at least two times a week and leave them in sunlight for 3 to 5 min on each side. Remember not in the hot sun but in the morning sun around 8-9 am then shower them in luke warm water. Vitamin D is very crucial and recent studies has it in proof Vitamin D is known to have a regulatory influence on both the immune system and skin barrier function. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4470215/ There are no creams involved. Or else you can try Besan dhal(chickpea flour you will get in indian grocery store and yogurt, Mix them into a paste and at room temperature use it as bodywash. Then rinse off. This may help cos yogurt has probiotic. Please make sure you do a patch test on your child before you apply.

Agreed. He seems to be putting a lot of faith in only that one, unreplicated study, where a fifth of participants DID still believe food was a culprit. He's doing a lot a double-talk here, main message being: patients who think food is an issue are wrong and (intro FEAR here) elimination diets could cause true allergies/anaphylaxis!

Doctors are taught everything they know from pharmaceuticals. And this study hes talking about is also financed by pharma. Why on earth would they want to prove that food is the main culprit? That's zero profit for them soooo, they can easily play with the results anyway they want. Patients are profitable as long as they're sick, once they heal that's millions in loss for big pharma

That's not what I heard. He basically said that most people don't actually have food allergies. They just have a weak skin barrier due to various factors such as the climate, pollution, the detergent you use, the material you wear etc.

I have been combating eczema all my life, recently my eczema flared up so bad on almost 10 of my fingers and on my right palm. It was very painful each time I take a shower or something as simple as washing my hands. My skin is so thin from all those years of steroid cream usage, and whenever I scratch them, they cracked open. My hands are in constant itch. I couldn't sleep at night and I was very depressed. It made my eczema problem even worse due to stress. Long story short, after many failed SELF-attempts to cure my eczema, finally I consulted a skin specialist, and the doctor advised me to take allergen-specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody test. The test is to screen for an allergy to a specific allergen. It can be from certain food, cat or dog dander, certain type of grass, etc. The result shown from the test, apparently I am allergic to 2 types of dust mites (Mite Farinae d2 and Mite Pteronyssinus d1), commonly found in our household. Since then, I have been taking active and preventive measures to mitigate this problem, like changed out old mattress and pillows, use new anti dust mite mattress, use anti dust mite mattress and pillow casing, spray on anti dust mite solution on sofa, chairs, bed, and even in my car. On top of that, I try my best to exercise regularly and eating healthy. Oh ya, it reduces my asthma attack too. I strongly advice for those who suffer from Eczema, go out and do the test and find out what are the things/food you are allergic to. I hope this comment helps. Cheers!
