So glad you got to see parts of where I grew up as a kid. I wondered when you started, how long it would take to get to this point! We holiday there from time to time. I saw on FB when you were organising to have a meet and greet, it would be good to say G'Day, but we are now 5 hrs inland. PS the tall bridge you went under is called the Rip Bridge. The swirls and rips in the water made it an obvious name!

Well I started looking for a boat yesterday. Living in Texas and close to Florida there is an abundance of pre-owned boats for sale close to me. I am very surprised, happily, at the prices I'm finding. I'm finding a lot of good used boats in the $8,000 to $20,000 range. Quite a few of them are well-equipped and currently cruising or have been very recently. This is giving me a pretty good feeling about joining the cruising Community soon. Ps. I hope I get the chance to sail to Australia. It is a beautiful place with great people.
@nzsaltflatsracer80544 жыл бұрын
Used boats are a lot cheaper here in the US & it's basically due to supply & demand. A lot of people buy boats here on a whim & then the novelty wears off. Find what you want & drive a hard bargain.

@PJ Southpaw PS. I noticed you were left handed when I saw you reeling in a fish. Hehe. I fished all my life and always thought it looked difficult to reel left handed.
@rorytennes85764 жыл бұрын
@PJ Southpaw you are all over the place. Well at first I was thinking a catamaran or a James wharram. But now I am leaning toward a monohull. There appears to be and abundance of Bluewater mono hulls to choose from around here. I am learning about which Styles in which Keels are the best for what I want. What is the make of Mirrool? And why did you choose it? Also I have heard from more than one person that they fiberglass boats from the 60s and early 70s are of higher quality material and thicker Hull
@rorytennes85764 жыл бұрын
@PJ Southpaw I was thinking catamaran or a James wharram because of the stability and maybe a little more room. I have had 3 multi-level spinal fusions it actually need another one right now. But I'm not going to do it just yet because it's not bothering me that bad. For instance with a James wharram you can actually Beach the boat instead of having to Anchor all the time. And the same can be done with certain catamarans. Which might help in Risky situations or if I was just too tired or stove up

Hello Troy and Pascale For some time I have been very interested in sailing. Currently I subscribe to a dozen sailing channels. I recently came across your channel and after watching a few episodes I feel you have one of the best sailing channels. So over the last few weeks I have been binge watching you. I am only up to episode 57 now, so I have a few weeks until I am current. Troy, your DIY episodes are excellent. I have learned a great deal from both of you. Your underwater episodes are also very good and your “Staring Credits” are a nice touch. Keep up your excellent work.

Ah, you guys keep doing this to me... Memories... End of 1969, left Adelaide, travelled across the Nullarbor to Perth and then on up to Koolan Island, out from Derby in the Kimberleys. One of the memories that has always stayed with me was powdered milk. In those days I'm pretty certain you could only get Sunshine, I think it may have been a Nestle product. The add was always buy a "Cow in a Can." As a child I didn't drink coffee but always remember loving the taste of powdered milk with Cornflakes. Yummo. Couldn't get milk on the Island so everyone drank powdered, every 2 years we'd fly over to Derby with all our gear, pack up the station wagon and drive back to Adelaide for holidays, camping most of the way. So powdered milk again... Loved it... Saw you bought 4 bags of the stuff, so what do you use it for apart from cuppa's and making yoghurt?? Do you have it cereal?? Great video guys. Looking forward to the next one, cheers for now... ;-}

Can't agree with your thoughts on milk powder. I was raised in Port Moresby on milk powder as that was all there was as fresh milk didn't exist and similarly there was no television either. This was about the same time as Mirool had her keel laid. So many new experiences in a life time.

Troy here's a fly casting tip. Don't raise the rod past 1:00 o'clock. This allows the line to "load" the rod as it travels behind you. Then when you start the forward motion the rod unloads.

Spring onions are something you can grow under a window really easily, hospital drip bag type hydroponics in a tiny amount of aged crushed bark and washed coarse sand, cycling very little water so it gets new water/nutrient all the time. Raise the bag and lower the bag to water them, Keep them short cut them like a crew cut :) a 600ml pet bottle with holes cut one side is as big a container as you need and a 300ml pet bottle as the drip bag, some clear carby fuel hose pressed in or grommets if you're fancy.

If you ever need to store fresh eggs for a long time do the following. Mix 1 oz by weight pickling lime with each quart of water and place unwashed eggs straight from the chicken in a container and cover with the mix and put a lid on top to keep water from evaperating we have eaten eggs that have sat on the kitchen counter for 1 1/2 years, the instruction I saw said the eggs would last 2 years, you could put a towel on top the eggs to keep them from moving and breaking.

I'm really glad that you've taken the time to talk about boat provisioning : at 61 iv'e realised that i'm seriously overweight on a 'normal' western diet and that iv'e really got to do something about it. Iv'e really got to have a major rethink about what i buy and store for the boat. My big change is that iv'e gone from very high carb to low carb and higher fat and one of the major problems iv'e found is that i''ll need much more cold storage volume on my little boat.

Fats include oils which don't need refrigeration for us. Dried meats are great too. Powdered milk as yoghurt and cheese only needs piecemeal refrigeration for a lot of food value.

@@dirtywetdogboatsandsailing6805 I can't say we do much research on it. We eat and see how we feel with it. Our primary fats are olive oil and butter or ghee with some sesame for flavour and grape occasionally. Pascale is happiest with no/low carb, high veg, moderate protein and fat. I operate well on high protein, high fat, moderate fruit/ carb. Informal fasting is just part of the life but I would say it contributes a lot to health and eating mostly what we hunt seems to fit but again, we aren't in a hurry to claim any expertise.
