Can technology truly change our most pressing social problems? Author, activist, and food systems researcher Tracy Ledger has her doubts. Take farming. The vocation used to be about producing food for all, and providing a dignified livelihood for the people who produced it. Today, the people who produce our food are the ones least likely to be able to afford to eat it. This has happened in spite of, and because of, the technology-driven, destructive, and inhuman farming systems that we have introduced, particularly in South Africa. This, she argues, has to do with what we as a society value most, and what we value least. It is not our technology that needs a fix, it’s our hearts.

Tracy has a Masters's degree in Agricultural Economics and a Ph.D. in Anthropology. She is the author of "An Empty Plate", which considers the twin challenges of food security and sustainable agriculture in South Africa. She believes that some of the most important economic and social problems in South Africa can be traced back to food, and that it should be at the centre of efforts to build a more equitable and just society.
