There's that awkward time when things start running out in the cellar and new harvests start coming in.. Will we have enough food?

On our homestead we do chemical-free gardening, grass-fed milk and beef, pastured eggs and broiler chickens, and free range children :) We love to go on adventures as a family, so if we're not workin on the farm, we're probably hiking or out getting ice cream. We're all into DIY, and being inventive and creative. We believe in homesteading that's sustainable, not just sustainable homesteading. Hey guys - great idea growing your own beans - I do it every year and it's a completely hands off crop (in fact, the first year I grew them, I just, as an experiment, threw a handful of store bought black beans into a bed and they grew prolifically, and I saved my own seeds from then on and they grew just as well).. Note, however, if you're planning on filling up that 5 gallon bucket with your own home grown beans, you'll need to grow a field worth. It takes a lot of beans to fill a bucket up.

Yes! I was so excited to grow black beans last season. I planted six plants to see how they would do. My total yield was two cups. lol. But it was still exciting to grow them and I'll definitely grow them again, using last year's crop as seed.

I threw some black eyed peas into our baby food forest for ground cover last year, and they grew so much that I had to be careful to keep them from choking out the berries and trees! Hilariously, I don’t even like eating black eyed peas, they were just super cheap. 😂

As a mom who has been homeschooling and growing food for years, I want to say I love your content. I always learn something new or get inspired to try harder. I wish my husband and I had the knowledge and the the goals you have when we were married thirty years ago. But it is such a joy to see our daughters growing up and surpassing us in all their skills and knowledge. And..because we have a big family, we have the added benifit of continuing to learn while some of our girls are still home.

I have recently found your channel and have been loving the videos. I was raised on a farm and my Daddy raised Hereford beef cattle. We always raised a big garden, and we had chickens for laying and some for eating. We raised rabbits and we always had a hog to fatten and eat. My Daddy hunted and fished. Some of your videos take me back to those good times. I am old now and I am constantly amazed at how much some of my friends don't know about animals and gardening. I feel my education on the farm was just as important as my education in school was. Bless your sweet family.

An idea : make instant mashed potatoes, or a sauce thickener, by boiling potatoes, mashing and drying them, powder them once dry. Freeze if unsure. Rehydrate in hot milk for mashed potatoes. Kids can do it. If you make sheppards pie. To have a lighter load sometimes...

I am a 66 yr old gardening grandma. It seems we are on the same schedule of an abundance of tomato products. I am only planting two plants. I am learning from your channel. I am most interested in the Lady Finger popcorn. A video on planting to harvest and when to harvest would be most helpful. The demo on the pancakes was amazing. I also have tons of strawberries and black berries I need to use up. I don't know if I missed it but I thought you were going to show how you made your smoothies with your berries? I am new to smoothies. Thanks for your great content. Btw...LOVE the bloopers! Keepin it real.

I make smoothies a lot. I use almond milk, but you could use any type of milk. I add 1/4 c of rolled oats, a T of flaxseed meal, a banana, a splash of vanilla, and about a cup of any frozen fruit. It makes a delicious quick breakfast that you can take out to the garden with you! My grandson loves “smoovies” too! 😊

I use plain or lemon yogurt, 2 or 3 kinds of fruit & juice to make our smoothies, doing it for over 25 yrs & very yummy. Just toss in your berries, or if lots to use up you can layer into an oatmeal crisp, easily frozen or served hot out of oven with milk, yogurt or home-made whipped cream. Huge hit with the kids, esp as breakfast on cold days.

Thanks for the great videos! If you have too many beef roasts just take the ones you like the least. Cut in slices semi frozen and put through a meat grinder. Make your own burger. Can get a decent sized electric grinder for couple hundred. We done this method for over 10 year. Make burger with the cuts your not using. Also can grind up freezer burnt stuff for dog food.

I highly recommend trying dehydrating veggies and fruit. Its a bit less work than canning and takes a lot less storage space. I do this with tomatoes, green beans, fruit, and garlic. I make pizza sauce rehydrating herbs tomatoes and garlic, throw anything in soup, green beans rehydrate in a pot of water easy, fruit becomes snacks and you can even use a blender to make dried extra greens, squash, or berries into nutritional powders. It has been a game changer. Plus fruit leather is a great snack.

I love a Dutch baby pancake! Such a great way to use up eggs and you’ve got great advice! My recipe is grain and dairy free and it puffs up nicely: 1/3 cup coconut oil 8 eggs 1 cup coconut or almond milk (I use coconut milk) 1/3 cup arrowroot or tapioca flour 1/4 cup coconut flour 1/2 tsp salt Preheat oven to 425, with cast iron & oil while batter is mixed. Blend eggs for 15 sec, add other ingredients and blend for another 30 seconds. Bake 20-24 min I use arrowroot flour, which subs nicely for corn starch in recipes as well and is grain free. I also make a berry sauce but I just cook it up with a splash of water and let it reduce a bit. I do add a tsp of vanilla to the Dutch baby and I reduce the coconut oil by the amount of ghee I use as a butter substitute. Ghee is okay to use for dairy free. I don’t have a good source for raw milk or I’d just use that to be honest. I have to be careful of what kind of dairy products I have unfortunately

I can’t remember if you can meet or not but it’s a really good way to use some of those roasts and have something on the shelf for a quick stroganoff or roast beef sandwich or even tacos. Can also use it in chili or soups. It will always be four tender and your kids will have time because you just can it in small one inch chunks. It will also open your freezers space or anything else you want to put in there and get it ready for your next beef

We live in Florida, so the water table is much too high for a root cellar or basement. Nobody has those here. This year, we are taking some inspiration from y’all, and turning our walk-in pantry into a cold room. Investing in a mini split (probably) just for that room, and planning to keep it cool year round. Yes, the electricity cost will be annoying, but so is having potatoes that only last a month. 😅

Here is how I know it's Spring: the redbuds are blooming , the bumblebees start flying, and the frogs are singing around our pond. I enjoy Spring and Fall the most, but there are some very good parts of summer and winter. When I was growing up in Nebraska, I though that Spring and Fall were just dates on a calendar, but here in Tennessee, the Springs and falls are wonderful. God bless y'all and keep growing. P.S. I put two roasts in the oven every time. One with potatoes and carrots for the first meal. The second I use to make either shredded beef enchiladas or hot beef sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy. Both are quick and easy and the enchiladas can be made ahead of when you need them and frozen.

We grow our food in the summer and want to store it to eat throughout the year. We love to buy food in bulk to save money and keep us out of the grocery store.😊

From what I've read about organic gardening nutrition deficiency is why things get "diseases". I'd try adding azomite to your soil. I use it for tomatoes ( they're prone to blossom end rot) and it's been working me for years. No blossom end rot on my tomatoes since I began using azomite. I use it for citrus trees in pots too. They do really well for me.

Thank you for the informative weekly videos! My husband and I watch them together. You got me very excited to plant apple mint this year but I have not found seeds in any of the seed catalogs- even Berlin seeds. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you!

We didn't plant ours from seed. We started with plants. Berlin Seeds has the plants.

We always eat the potatoes too until the sprouts are more than an inch or so. Its usually squishy by then anyway. You are both so organized. Its inspiring. I still have to remember to shop my pantry first. I'm almost there. Happy growing!

Another amazing video as always! Two thoughts/ideas for you guys... We make the Dutch baby too, but ours is sourdough and really tasty, I know you do sourdough so thought you might like that idea if you haven't tried it. And second, when we get a good deal on potatoes in a 50 lb bag we like to can them in cubes. It's super simple and although it's more time upfront, there's nothing better than needing a super fast carb side for supper and popping open a couple cans of potatoes heating them, shredding some cheddar cheese in to melt and adding some want and pepper and wahlah! Anyways just two ideas. Keep up the amazing work, you guys are so inspiring! I watch every one of your videos that comes out, lol.

I plant an area of 100 ft by 50 ft garden with beans , one year it's black beans the next year it is kidney then black beans again. I agree I feel spoil having the pantry with food in it.

Cooling the storage : your pipe can run below the ground outside, that’s a good way to have cooled air all year. Do think of a condensation trap before it gets to your basement.

I know what they are talking about with sprouted potatoes. I was raised on them too!!!! I’m 59 but due to gut issues I’ve since learned they put you at risk for potential toxicity from solanine and chaconine when they have root sprouts. Love your show! I’ve watched most TWICE!

I know canning is your least favorite thing, however you can still consider slowly getting into it as a way to help provide even more shelf stable convenience for your family. It also helps you empty your freezer. For example, one of the first things I ever canned was potatoes, and it is so convenient to pop a lid. It's not a must because you guys alreadyhave a lot going on, but it's worth considering canning one item each week.

@@morethanfarmers ok 👍 I love them good idea👌 I also saw you have wire hanging baskets for you mittens and toques by you front door. I love that idea as well!! it makes it breathable and easy to dry instead of a inclosed drawer, where it can't breath and starts to smell, do you have a link to those?

Hi! Thanks for the video! By the way, carrots don't grow if you cut the place that gives sprouts (0,5-1 cm). I was afraid to do that, but yes, they don't grow any more, start with, for example, 1-2 bags to compare how they behave compared to those which are not cut ;) To store - the same way - in bags.

I’m having trouble with my beef burger ratio too something we learned from it- roast, slow cook other cuts and have shredded beef tacos, barbecued sandwiches, quesadillas, you can make ahead and freeze in portions for quick meals. If you like fresh fruit drinks we love our whole frozen strawberries blended with lemon juice and sweetener our strawberries disappear too fast 😮
