As the cost of food and fuel continues to increase, more families are relying on food stamps to get them through the month. Seth Doane reports on how Americans are coping with the economic downturn.

My mom supported 3 kids with only 25,000 year after my dad left us. We went from 150,000 to 25,000 and we still made it. She didn't buy name brand or junk food. We had basic dish and internet. She wore rags so we could have nice clothes. She was always too proud to get handouts. When we were old enough to work we got jobs and helped out. Both my sisters went to college and I'm just starting so I think we did well. You have to make sacrifices when needed.

I can't believe how many people blame the poor for food stamps. If you want to blame anyone for food stamps, blame the multi-billion dollar agribusiness corporations which give millions to politicians and lobbyists to make sure that the Food Stamp Progarm stays fully funded. They're the ones who profit the most from food stamps. Make no mistake about it - the Food Stamp Program is CORPORATE welfare. The poor are just the conduit through which the money is funneled.

I worked for The Department of Human Services for 8 year's and white people are generally denied because they're white and are also put at the bottom of the stack of application's. There is no such thing as white privilege, anyone who thinks so is a complete and utter moron. White men have it the worst actually, they are denied benefits that they would get if they were black or hispanic and everyone thinks that because you're white you automatically just HAVE money, what fuck'in goons. Affirmative action, that's a privilege, you can get a job simply because you're black etc, not because you're qualified, the problem is you have to actually wake up and go to the job and do it right. It's so sad, I've seen it from the inside, white families denied when they work hard but simply don't make enough and then are made to feel like they should be ashamed to BE white. If you're anything other than white you don't have to even bother looking for a job, why do you think they ask on the food stamp application what race you are? That shouldn't matter!, but sadly it does. Oh by the way I'm NOT white, seeing this disturbed me so badly, so please don't jump to conclusions, what I say is the truth.

That's just data that gets send to the federal government for statistics. Speaking of more white people get welfare than black.

I saw something similar not to long ago. A man and woman both covered in tattoos ( not those crappy homemade type, very proffesional ) and they each had the wrap surrounding their arms with brand new tattoos that they must have just had done that day. They used a food stamp card for their 2 full shopping carts of name brand food. Then they pulled out a huge wad of cash to pay for their beer and cigarettes. We went outside at the same time and they got in a brand new Escalade and drove off.

Exactly--my grandparents lived on a farm, grew their own veg., made everything by hand including their clothes. And they never thought of themselves as "poor" -- and they never asked for a handout from anyone. You can still find people like that where I live, fortunately--hardworking, honest people who are proud to making their own way. But there's also a lot of people here who pretend to be poor so they can get the food stamps and other benefits, it's disgusting to see.

@q.t.gamingfamily4 жыл бұрын
jfsfrnd It’s the same here. The ones saying crazy stuff are literally pulling their “knowledge” out of the air using propaganda in the media. One person stated they work 40 hours a week but can only afford to spend $20 on food. That’s roughly $1218.00 a month using 4.2 weeks multiplier of the minimum wage per hour. Out of 1218.00-80=1138.00 left. It’s only one person. If I made that, I’d go back to school. Wait, I did that. I was an executive Secretary/Administrative Assistant as my last career before becoming a nurse. Back then, 22+ years ago I was making $16/hour and THAT wasn’t enough. Instead of resolving myself to my circumstances and saying white man, the man, whatever is holding me down; I went to nursing school. There is one thing I do love about this country (one thing), I can be whatever the fuq I want to be. I can go back and become a lawyer, I can get a second bachelors, I can drop it all and go into engineering. Some countries won’t allow me to even learn to read. That said, most of our people know how to survive without government support and do. My opinion is not the popular one but I’d like to see it all shut off because if it’s gone, we have no choice but to sink or swim. Our people are known to swim every time. This public assistance mess is making my people extremely dependent on the government and frightened of taking any employment because they fear losing aide.

I agree. I have conflicting views when it comes to public assistance programs . I can see both sides of the argument on this topic. While there are people who abuse the system or make poor choices in life , most people receiving assistance DO need help and aren't trying to cheat the system. I believe that we're living in uncertain times and the financial security that people enjoyed in the past is just about over. I'm not an expert on economics , but things don't look good. I believe we'll be seeing more and more people asking for help. Those who want to judge everyone on food stamps or other public assistance as just taking advantage of the system better take heed .They may think that nothing will happen to them , but anything is possible. People need to look at the big picture , show kindness to others , and not make assumptions about those who receive assistance. Someday they might find themselves in the very same situation.
@Sklingolder1113 жыл бұрын
It is utterly appalling to see how many people are quick to comment, and criticize the actions of others based on a brief news spot. The fact that people in Chicago may or may not have to deal with other economic factors, which contribute to their poverty level, or need for monetary assistance, is not nearly as disgusting as people's tendency to belittle, and complain, instead of working together to attain a viable solution to this country's problems.

If you've ever been convicted of a minor crime, you may have been forced to do community service to avoid jail or a large fine. Working poor should be exempt, but un-employed welfare recipients should have to "volunteer" to keep benefits. Working at a soup kitchen for the homeless not only would provide a service, but also the opportunity to meet new people, who may help you find a job to get you off welfare completely. Most people on it do need it, but the lazy fraudsters wouldn't put forth the effort to keep it.

My point is that those people who won't have roofs over their heads or food on their table are the same people who keep voting for the people who are going to put them into that situation. I guess I don't really have a point, its just an observation and a rather sad one at that.

I personal think they need to raise food stamp funding more because I receive $479 dollars a month and is not enough because the food prices are too high , When I go to Wal mart only 3 bag is $ 89 dollars ... I agree Food Stamp is not enough they need to increase food stamp more or lowest the prices of food down ..

Most people that work who are denied what little help they seek during rough times will also shoot the program down.You can tell who these people are by their response.It's akin to having two children where one is given candy,and the other is not!Instantly,anger,"If I can't have it, they shouldn't mentality,and insults about the program,and those on it!" I don't agree you should be completely destitute to receive benefits.It's the system that's broken and reaching out to the broken.

Like I go on plus every month, I live in small town so rent is cheap..but not any jobs I can do.. Thank God I am not in America, (from Finland). I would sleep in the streets.

Idellle Yeah you really would and sad to say not only would we let you sleep in the streets, we’d treat you as if you have leprocy (sp). Many of us would give you a job application as a donation or leftovers of a meal we don’t want any more of. Some of us would have beaten you, maybe even to death, just for the fun of it all because if you’re homeless surely you don’t have anyone who gives a damn about you. Read our news articles. I say we only because I am American too but make no mistake, do NOT believe the false advertisement of how great America is. It’s not great. It’s been so busy being in everyone else’s business it doesn’t even try to fix ours. If you have a wonderful life in Finland, make America a tourist destination and nothing more.

Society here in America is mooching off my hard work and other hundreds of thousand workers everyday now as we speak. Yet not a soul is raising hell over that as much I see. I hate that able body people get free food and take away from people who really need it but what about people who are now working free labor who need to feed their families and pay bills? Canada could use someone with skills in construction, carpentry and Havoc. Looks like I'm their girl. Others with skills can tag along if they so wish because it would now be suicide staying here. Canada is always looking to up their population with hard workers who earn their keep. America apparently doesn't give a shit enough to pay it's people for their labor or skills. Also I can't take out my savings and use that to open my own business and charge my own prices because I need a federal worker who can deposit the damn check in the account for me at the TSP because even they are government workers. So now I will take work where I can get it and get the hell out of here.

I noticed none of them were buying raw ingredients like rice, flour, beans, etc. They whine about having it tough, yet aren't even willing to prepare and cook a meal with food provided to them free by the taxpayers. Oh, I almost forgot. They're entitled.

I noticed convenience foods in some of the carts can you imagine buying pre made frozen pancakes when you are busted poor. they are the easiest thing in the world to make from scratch. Flour + egg, pinch of baking soda, water or milk and presto PANCAKES.

I work in retail and see the abuse of the system every day. They'll buy a gallon of milk and a half gallon of coffee brandy at least once a week. Excuse me, but I can't afford to drink and I work six days a week! Sex offenders come in with their EBT card as well! That's a slap in the face. I have a disabled child and I was denied food stamps back when I needed them. What the hell is going on where a sex offender's well being is more important than a disabled child's?

Why do all these people struggling (and I do believe they are,I'm not having a go at them)all seem to have cars?In the UK no one with that sort of income would even consider running a vehicle,it's the first item to go when money becomes tight.I saw a video last year about free Thanksgiving turkeys being handed out to those whose income fell below a certain level.5000 responded by driving to the giant car park where they would receive them and it was completely filled by their vehicles.There was some sort of system for counting people into the car park and organisers said there were 4878 vehicles.If people can afford to run a car,then they can afford to eat by getting rid of it.

Yup I agree. These clothes could be old or could have given to her. Besides we don't know the whole story. I hope we can have some compassion. It seems compassion and thinking of others are gone. We can't buy or charge compassion.

The woman who allegedly isn't eating to save food for her kids sure is heavy-set, has died hair, and is wearing an Armani shirt! I am not saying it is easy for everybody to manage to get by, but these people have the mentality that the system owes them - like that guy who goes by the alias Michael Jordan who says, "I was about to ask you for some change."
@THopkins714 жыл бұрын
As of today, there are 36 million families on food stamps. If the dollar collapses - all services will end and these people will all starve. This is serious. The Government needs to create jobs instead of giving money to Wall Street for a free ride.
