No, the title is not clickbait. Can a sandwich ACTUALLY make you a better athlete? Specifically, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. When I found out that many NBA players ate a PB&J sandwich - PB&J adjacent item - before a game, I had to figure out WHY! Theorists, this goes beyond sports and nutrition. This is about validating all of the PB&J sandwiches I've eaten over my life. Get ready to play ball!

Once I started this episode, and when Mat mentioned the superstitions with athletes, I theorize it may be a nutritional benefit but mostly it's a mental thing, a placebo effect that helps them and also reminds them of simpler times as kids, a sort of optimistic start to an intense athletic match. Since if you're mentally feeling good, you're probably going to perform better than if you're upset or not feeling well mentally that game. In the age old adage "gotta getcha head in the game"

I think that superstition and nostalgia are one part of it. Though I DO think there's one more practical side to it. It happens to be this mixture of nutritional bonuses that MatPat noted, as well as being absolutely dead-simple to make and just as if not even simpler to eat, making it a perfect mix of helpful, practical, and sprinkled with a little bit of magic.

As soon as I heard “PB&J” I was like, “yeah, absolutely makes sense.” TL:DW Peanut butter is an extremely good source of protein and long-term energy, jelly and bread are great sources of sugar & short-term energy. Also, Matt didn’t mention it, but a PB&J is also a fairly light meal, so reduced risk of cramps compared to, say, pizza which would have a similar effect otherwise.
@truekurayami
@truekurayami 2 жыл бұрын
The bread part of the brake down for short/long term energy is debatable in practice just because some breads lean more towards the complex/long-term side, though they are usually a "heavier" option but as a single sandwich or two that usually won't become a problem.

Very fun episode! But, for anyone thinking this a key to success, a bit more info on some of those examples. Boston assembled a super team and were the heavy favorites to win the title. Wasn't a surprise. That warriors team lost in the finals, giving up a 3-1 lead. And the bucks(and suns for that matter) were able to survive the injury riddled match ups to make the finals this year. I didn't ever expect to be able to flex my sports knowledge here 😂

It may also be important that pb&j is quite calory dense which may be helpful because you want a lot of energy, but you don't want to play with your stomach stuffed. There were some studies done that people perform the best in many tasks when a bit hungry, and hunger response at first is mostly based on how full your stomach is before the body realizes exactly how much energy it got from a meal. So if you have to perform at highest level you can it would seem to be most beneficial to eat something dense in calories but low in volume so your energy needs are meet but you body doesn't immediately go into rest and digest mode.

let me tell you matt patt, as a member of my schools varsity i always need something sweet. After a game all I crave is carbs and something sweet. My mom started mixing in protein powder with my homemade pb and i just enjoy it so much after games, but i dont use jam though as it has a lot of added sugars that could cause more issues than it solves. My ideal pb SW goes as follows 100% WW bread, Protein pb, WW bread, more pb, and WW bread at the bottom. Carbs and protein go hand in hand for muscle buildup which makes a pb sandwich a great meal.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a mental component that goes into this formula as well. Not only are there carbs, protein and the sugar rush that comes from the jam in a PB&J sandwich, but there's also a nostalgic, emotional connection to childhood triggered by gustatory memory. For most people, remembering pleasant childhood memories can calm your nerves, releases dopamine and sometimes oxytocin, or at least the memory of feeling good. And auditory, gustatory and olfactory memories from childhood trigger much stronger reactions in the body than from any other time in the lifespan. SO, a player that's all hyped up for a game getting all jittery and nervous is going to be far quicker to anger in that state than usual. (Anyone who has worked in retail or fast food knows what I'm talking about.) But popping a few PB&J's pre-, in- and post-game, is going to flood their brain with dopamine and nostalgia, making them less nervous, happier, and easier to work with teammates and coaches. Plus, PB&J's are delicious. And I'm not saying this would work for everybody, like if you were allergic to peanuts, grapes, strawberries, etc., and/or just didn't eat PB&J sandwiches growing up, but a lot of kids did and still do, so it would work for the majority.

my guess is that the way it works is the simple carbs give a instant boost. While the complex carbs of the peanut butter provide slower boost sustaining the effect. Thus eating the sandwich early and durring the game provides both instant boost and sustaining. Where as deconstructed your basically stacking the boosts. However the question occurs how quickly do those effects even happen biologicaly speaking it could just be a plecibo effect brought on by the preception of the game going better to start and incorperating into the rituals.
