Matt has had a few mistakes in his theories in the past, but all in all for the amount of content he puts out, with the amount of research, detail and organization. Few creators are as unbelievably impressive as what "The Theorists" have built across their channels. I feel like this general sentiment has lead to a lot of bad faith criticisms or assumptions about him, but Matt seems like a good guy, or in the least, someone who Is putting in effort to get things right. This video did a wonderful job basically conclusively responding to the insinuations around this particular video- but never does he even acknowledge the sort of snide cynicism from the original video. Exactly, especially when human biology/anatomy is a whole other can of worms that is varied on so many aspects of how you're already built (through genetics and different hereditary or environmental defects to your body). Both nutrition and the human body are so complex that, once put together, is like trying to make a never ending science experiment with too many independent and independent variables to keep track for. I give MatPat credit for making all of the complexities he researches for days maybe even weeks, sound interesting, enjoyable to learn and digestible. I already have trouble focusing on stuff, but he makes it interesting in a way I many others are able to learn from it and enjoy it. Overall, I greatly dislike the fact that so many people were so quick to bash Food THeory along with other theory videos without taking a step back and thinking for a second. Perhaps looking in the description or doing their own research or- heck- even watching the rest of the video MatPat got "called out" on.

(Plus with this editing style, I would definitely watch a 90 minute video on bioavailability, and am genuinely curious now)
@envytee96592 жыл бұрын
Yes, but her measuring system is just moronic. Serving size to serving size comparisons are one of the dumbest things you can ever do, because as this video shows, you can call just about anything a serving size. That inconsistency results in comparisons that actually end up giving no useful information, and often times tend more towards misinformation. Again, as this video shows, milk has more calories than coke, but simply because milk claims a smaller serving size, this truth is distorted. Is it misinformation? Not exactly, since the nutrition per serving size is correct. But is this done in a way to trick people into thinking that this product has less calories than it does? Yes, absolutely. The know people don't pay that much attention generally to calculate the true calories in everything they pick up, so they try to put a low serving size so they can have lower calories printed on the label. Look at most snacks and drinks. A small bag, which realistically one person will consume, is often shared up into multiple servings for the reason above. This is why "serving size" is a garbage metric to conpare by. Mat knows it but is too kind to call her out on it, and she knows it but is trying to twist things to fit her stance.

@jacksyoutubechannel40452 жыл бұрын
@@ghetoknight7801 The problem is that she wasn't doing a debunking, rebuttal, or response to his video, so his focus on adults in _his_ video wasn't relevant to _her_ video. It was an aggregation of assertions from various videos about whether or not milk is good for you, including a brief clip from MatPat's, that she used as a jumping off point to discuss what's being said about the topic in other videos, what's misinformation, and what are some other things to consider. Additionally, lactose intolerance isn't the only reason why a parent might be hoping there are adequate substitutes for the milk a child needs. That's part of the reason Ann focused on servings. If you're, say, a parent who cut out gluten when being gluten-free was popular, or you're a vegan, Ann's video shows that if you decide not to give your child milk, you can't just make them eat a serving of kale and call it even. You're going to have to figure out how to get them to consume that sort of volume of something like kale _multiple times a day._ (As one example.)

But here's my take on one example of how he is manipulating the information (re broccoli): 1) In his video he compares a serving size of broccoli to a serving size of milk, even though earlier in the video he says his team didn't compare by serving size, they compared gram to gram 2) The source he uses has 1 cup of broccoli as 180 mg of Calcium even though every other source you encounter has 1 cup of broccoli well under 100mg. 3) All other sources include both volume (cups) and weight (grams). He made a point that his team doesn't use serving size due to it's variability so they used grams. Why didn't he use grams for broccoli if it's so readily available? The answer is that every other source that is out there would show that you would absorb far more calcium by milk (gram per gram or serving by serving) except for the one dubious source he pulled, which coincidently goes against the methodology he stated earlier in this video.

At 8:45 when they were talking about how a huge pile of kale seemed like an outrageous amount of kale to be more than a single glass of milk, and then MatPat held up a glass of puréed kale, I think that was a really good concrete example of how with food nutrition and stuff it REALLY depends on how you look at it. Because that big bowl of raw whole kale was just about a glass of purée, and this wasn’t mentioned but if you cook kale it’s also gonna appear smaller and maybe would be closer to a single serving than in its raw form (I’m not saying it is, idk, just trying to give another example)
@starlight45992 жыл бұрын
It absolutely shrinks down as you suggested! ~200g of kale is a totally normal serving size, in some recipes you need even more per person. But you loose a bit of calcium in the cooking process of course.

As soon as you mentioned "serving sizes", I knew exactly where this was going. Okay, maybe not all the stuff about bioavailability, but absolutely the "talking about food is difficult" talk. I was immediately brought back to high school, talking about how you need to label your graphs and info in the most relevant way for your experiment (don't measure the height of a bouncing ball in mm or miles, for example) And secondly, news reports on scientific studies radically distorting facts for interesting headlines. The one I recall best was "drinking red wine helps you get pregnant" - the facts were, "drinking red wine produces a small amount of a hormone that is one of the hundreds that can be involved in conception". And the annoying part is, people either believe it blindly because "it's science, right?" or it undermines future scientific reports because "remember that one time they were super wrong?". Which is *ABSOLUTELY* a problem I have with people who dismiss the Theory channels based on a single bad one. Honestly, great work addressing both of these in this response. For all the Sans is Ness hate, there's a reason I still watch your content after so many years. @@aquila7602 I'd like to recommend to you "Emily Ruins Adam Ruins Everything" for comparison. Same basic premise - edutainment show being challenged on their information. But I'd like you to look at the incredible difference in tone. If you provide content you frame as "science", you're quickly held to a pretty high standard. It's especially important in food science, because that's an area especially riddled with mis- and disinformation. Someone who loves to spread information should be able to put their ego aside enough to not bristle at every challenge and "attack", but instead reevaluate their approach and research. I mean, consider what happened here. A food *scientist,* an expert in the field, held up a clip of misleading information as one of many examples of similar sentiments and added some context to it. Matpat *could* have ignored the rude comments and go to the more levelheaded scientist directly, developing a better piece of information collaboratively. Mat mentions, for example, the issues of comparing food on a nutritional level. A food scientist is the perfect person to consult on this and develop a good measuring or comparison system with. It could have been an amazing collaboration. Ann is often open to comparing approaches and developing experiments together, she has approached other creators about this before when they challenged *her* information. So why did Mat instead focus on the rude comments and on how he was totally actually correct? In the video I recommended above, Adam is at one point confronted with a similar issue where the information he provided was correct, but the way he presented it gave people the wrong impression. His response about that? Admitting that if he wants to educate, being correct is not is only duty. He also needs to communicate the correct information well and understandably. I totally get being angry. But like... if you love truth, information and science, and if you love educating people, you should be able to vent off-camera and approach your script and performance without that emotional bias. At least enough to focus on "did I do this right?" over "am I technically correct?".

Agreed, perspective and context seem to be things that many people struggle with... Many seem to judge ideas based on who says them and not on the merits of the idea in question... The game can become person vs. person/group vs group instead of trying to find the actual facts... People like to exaggerate too lol. Oh well...

Ann was replying earlier in the comments of her video saying that MATPAT is still misdirecting the audience, using incorrect numbers, and is simply wrong. It's unbelievable to see. Go look at her replies in the comments on that video. I think it's very disrespectful.

I don't worry about serving sizes, calories, etc I follow a simple philosophy, on food - "eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full"

i think bio-availability should be noted on the food labels, seems useful.

Yeah, but they won't since it would in some cases make the product sell less.

There's more than just basic bio-availability wrong with nutrition labels. Calories themselves are a mess. I was stunned when I realized that fibre is included in calories. Because IIRC calories are based on what will burn, because it's a good way to measure the energy in food, and fibre contains energy and will burn just like sugars. But your body doesn't absorb energy from fibre and we specifically include it in food because it's not absorbed and has other benefits.
@kindlin2 жыл бұрын
@@danfr There are different types of fiber, and some have calories associated with them. Insoluble fiber, like the hard fibrous plant material, doesn't have caloric value.

Hey matpat, I've literally paused the video at the serving size comparison part, just to say that in Australia we have the nutritional values for each food items individual serving as well as the nutritional values per 100 gms or 100mls. This makes food comparisons so much easier for me to work out sodium and potassium levels in 2 different products regardless of serving sizes.

@@iamagi well I feel like mat would have brought it up if food labels said this where he lives. To me it seems like the us doesn't do it.
@antiloser-NFS2 жыл бұрын
@@iamagi In the US it just shows content per serving and tells you the serving size in weight/mass. if you wanted to do a comparison like that you would have to do the math yourself.
