I've been born in Leeuwarden, raised in Franeker from 1 y.o. and left to Gelderland when I was 27. I still miss Friesland and it's culture. We tend to be a little more direct, or so I feel. Also, and here comes the pride talking, I love our history which is far more influental then people realize. Frysk or Frisian is older then Dutch (or as a Frysk speaker would say: Hollands) and Franeker actually had a university until Napoleon wrecked it. Franeker was even going to be the capital due to the university, but Leeuwarden grew more exponentially due to being more central iirc. If you happen to find yourself there again, be sure to visit the "Van der Kloet"-chain of bakeries. They're really, really good and know the local delicacies in pastries well. Get a suikerbrood from them and you will know what I mean. And in Franeker, REALLY go to PéPé and get yourself a "broodje warm vlees met pinda". It's actual simmered through and through meat with a wonderful seasoning instead of the usual ham or fricandeau that's being grilled.

My wife was born in Marsum (5 km west of Leeuwarden, near airforce base). it has been my extreme please to have visited there a number of times. Hi! I am really enjoying watching your videos. I am an American of Dutch ancestry. Some of my ancestry has only been in America for a couple of generations while other lines have been here since New York was New Amsterdam. I grew up in the Holland, Zeeland, Borculo, Drenthe areas of Michigan where we celebrate our Dutch heritage every year at a festival known as Tulip Time. Recently my husband and I moved from the Holland, Michigan area to Southwest Missouri and it has been a culture shock for sure. I grew up in a place where every day the farmers would come in from the fields or barns for coffee. Everyday, at the same time, like clockwork, the restaurants would be full of farmers. On the weekends we had coffee at a relatives house. Here, in Southwest Missouri, people seem very uncomfortable with being invited to your home. It is interesting to watch your videos (and the videos of others) and see some of the cultural things that I took to be the norm here in America (and I'm learning it's not) be so similar in the Netherlands. I have always been curious about one thing though and I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. Where I came from in Holland, Michigan if you went into a Dutch family's home you never had to look for the trashcan. The trash was always kept under the sink on the right hand side. If someone asked where the trash was all you had to say was "I'm Dutch" and they knew where to find it. Do the Dutch in the Netherlands keep their trash under the sink on the right hand side?

Another great video. If you are going to N.Brabant I can recommend Willemstad which I have visited a couple of times. Just a great little town to wander round with lots of little quirks such as fairy doors on some of its trees. I cannot wait to get back to the Netherlands had to cancel this years cycle trip. Nice to see Leeuwarden, the town I was born in and where I lived until my 17th. One of my old schools (Wissesdwinger MAVO) was situated next to the Prinsentuin, the park you were in. How often have I been to La Venezia in summertime to grab an icecream 😋 When you’re visiting Utrecht, also make sure you come to see Amersfoort, my present hometown for 34 years now. I don’t mean to be arrogant but I think it’s safe to say we have one the most beautiful and best preserved historical city centers in the Netherlands. Looking forward to seeing your video then 👍🏽

Unfortunately, it's untrue and marketing because it would break people's hearts, especially mothers'. They cry from the very beginning. The babies are taken away because the milk is wanted for humans. Female calves may be kept and fed inferior formula until they are old enough to be inseminated. Cows can not produce milk unless pregnant. And the boys and unwanted girls are sent to auction where they are poked with electric prods to stand up so bidders can see them. They are then kept in small crates and slaughtered for veal. When mother cow can't give the thousands of gallons she was before, she is sold for meat. As she waits, she cries in pain from her engorged teets. It's what stops me from enjoying dairy. I can't enjoy pain and suffering. And all for palette pleasure. Milk is not necessary and probably very bad for humans. Your mom wasn't a cow. I grew up on a farm and visited many family farms.

Ooo, you have to stop at Hooghuys Brassierie in Eindhoven! I can't not get a sandwich there whenever I'm in town... and if I'm staying there, I sometimes turn up everyday! (If you go, tell Lisa and Raymond, "Nicole says 'Hi!'") I always stay at the Pullman Cocagne, and there is this other great eatery called "Downtown Gourmet Market" on Smalle Haven. It's like Epcot at Disney in Florida where you can, as I call it, "Eat the World." I've held off on seeing the Phillips Museum, only as an "Well I have to go back and see the Phillips Museum. 🤷‍♀️" I'll get to it one day 😆. Ugh... now I really miss Eindhoven 😭.

Yeeeeehhh you visit my Place of Birth: Harlingen. I left Harlingen for Work in The Hague, when I was 21. Soooooo glad because ‘in het Westen’ as we say (is this proper English?) in Fryslan you have to go, at that Time, for a Job. Oh, two tips: You can do a rowing workshop in a dinghy (sloep). Every year there is the ‘Harlingen-Terschelling Sloepenrace’. And very popular is to go to Terschelling or Vlieland also for a Day. Rent a Bike, online, and go for it. Terschelling is my favorite☺️.

Nice video again guys :-) Being Dutch I would have to complain about the heat and this made it harder to do things and to be really active :-P So next is Noord-Brabant? Will there be a Meet-and-Greet? I might come over then! Please could you let me know? 1 very unique tip to visit is the Loonse duinen.. a big Sahara of sand that is unique in The Netherlands. Would be a good spot to do the meet-and-greet! (Landgoed Bosch en Duin ) because it is central in Noord-Brabant.

In Noord-Brabant I can recommend 's-Hertogenbosch (or Den Bosch in case you actually want to pronounce it). It is a lovely old town. The cathedral has a non-matching tower and one of the angels on the roof holds a mobile phone. You can book either a big commercial ship that is suitable for the larger canals, but much more interesting is the Binnendieze, which was used as a sewer until the 1960s. That is the real shit :-) You will see much more of the town from those smaller boats.

Den Bosch is indeed incredibly beautiful. Eindhoven doesn't have old buildings, unfortunately. The Philips museum in Eindhoven is worth a visit though. Thanks for all of your vids, Jovie. I love watching them.

you were really close to the town "Lemmer" where i live, there is a World Heritage site here called the "ir. D.F. Wouda Gemaal" its the largest still steam powered water pumping station in the world. during the really wet months of the year, or during flash floods. it pumps 4.000.000 liters of water per minute (about 1 million gallons a minute) to prevent the "polders" from flooding, they have tours including a new VR experience i believe. and its always open when the station is active, i believe its even mentioned on national news when it starts up, and of course it gets posted on their official website. (woudagemaal nl) you can ofcourse visit when the pumping station is not operating but it takes away from the experience. recommended site for anyone to check out, and since Jovie lives here, i recommend the next flash flood or long rain falls. go check out if the pumping station is in operation and if so, visit!. it takes 23 hours to start up and usually runs for 2 days after that. a sight to behold for sure! the farm you went to, i go there stop for coffee or ice cream all the time on my way home from work. i drive the road in front of it every single day, fun to see! another great video Jovie!

I also slept in a 'bedstee' as I child on holiday with my auntie. Just leave the doors open and it is ok. You never been in Harlingen Str Bolsward? That's where my dad was hiding, and the house is about walking distance from the bridge. He watched the Germans and came running down the stairs. His words "In the cellar she goes up any min.....!" The bridge watcher also couldn't be found as he refused to haul up the bridge. Poor man a hand grenade was also chucked in his house for good measure. All for nothing Canadian engineers had a new bridge in next to no time. Friendly bunch of young men. My six-month young brother at the time was invited to share their roast beef. After it was minced up ate it as well.

I appreciate your guide's opinion regarding the Frisian "language" and I know that officially Frisian has been made what the Dutch call "de tweede rijkstaal", but I firmly believe that the majority of Dutch people view Frisian as no more than a dialect of the Dutch language. Btw... Your pronunciation of Frisian left me thinking that you thought it was the Dutch name for Frisian. It's actually English. The Dutch word for Frisian is Fries. No, not like the English word "fries." :-)

Love you videos about all the different provinces in the Netherlands and I really enjoy you are so interested in learning more about our 'kikkerlandje' I spotted 1 small mistake though. You said the official language spoken in Friesland is West Frisian...that is actually not true. The official languages is Frisian ( Fryske) and has a lot in common with the English and Dutch languages, because they are all part of the West German language branch. West Friesland is a region in North Holland that stretches from Alkmaar to Schagen ( some say even higher up, but that is where you get into the 'North Holland North' region) The West Frisian dialect spoken has some similarities with the Amsterdam dialect, but has it's own pronunciation of certain Dutch words. Thank you for making people aware of the underappreciated provinces/cities/towns/places in the Netherlands that are so worth it to visit!! And thank you for making people aware the 1,5 meter/6 feet distance should still be in full effect!!! Thank you trice for this amazing wonderful video...loved every second of it!

Actually, linguistically, it is West Frisian, as East Frisian was/is spoken in northern Germany.

@@urbandiscount But you have to be VERY careful with that, you see from a Frisian point of view it goes West-Fries (Franconian dialect with Frisian substrate, Afsluitdijk, West-Lauwersk Frysk, Lauwers, East-Lauwers Frisian (extinct), Dollart, Seeltersk (the other forms of East Frisian are extinct too), now it happens to be the case that the Lauwers seems indeed to be the historically important division, but we, remaining Frisian speakers, do not like to have our forms of Frisian indicated by description which are used for non-Frisian dialects of our neighbours too, doing that, though maybe logically correct, is not clear and can lead to confusion. West-Lauwers (if not speaking about the language spoken in West-Friesland) is the precise and respectful indication, and that is indeed together with the extinct Frisian from West-Friesland, West-Frisian, of which the latter component was the substrate to the franconian tongue indicated by that name too. In the context Jovie used, it is indeed a small mistake, as she drove on the Afsluitdijk from the side with "Westfries" or the "West-Frisian dialect" to the side with Frysk, West-Lauwersk Frysk, Fries, or the "West-Frisian language", so it would have been better if she had used simply Frisian or West-Lauwers Frisian for precision, but indeed, it is technically not incorrect, just very confusing.

@@urbandiscount to be more precise, in East Frisia they speak a lower Saxon dialect which is similar as the Groninger dialect. In Northern Germany (at the Danish border) the speak Northern Frisian. In East Frisia there are few villages where they speak Saater Frisian. Those 3 Frisian languages are very different. And you're right that it is West-Frisian from an international point of view, but in the Netherlands West Fries is a dialect spoken in the north of North Holland. I have lived there, and my grandparent spoke it.

👍the Planetarium shows planets in real time, handmade, for centuries. My advise for Noord Brabant is the Worstenbroodje and the Bossche Bol. And the old road from Eindhoven to Arnhem, thats WW2 history. I personally would go to the DAF museum, DAF is a dutch carbrand, the cars are famous for their Variomatic transmission, it is equily fast forward as backward. It is also called " the King of the Mountain" (faster as a Porsche) While it is a small car, lightweight and Variomatic acceleration is fast. It was a popular brand in the 50's/60's and 70's. They invented the "Riding raincoat" too, a very small car which fits in a small hallway! 😂

Used to get raw milk and buttermilk (karnemelk) straight from the farmers where I used to live first in Franeker. Close to Lutjelollum and the trainstation in Franeker. Nothing, nothing beats that.

@@TheTekknician Oh for the days when the Milkman delivered it to ones door in the 50's and 60's. Many Farmers prefer not to sell it now due to the extra hygiene and cost involved over producing milk that will be pasteurised and then homogenised by the dairy. Raw milk cured my lactose intolerance as a kid due to the healthy bacteria it contained.

one of my fondest memories is from when i was about 6 years old. i was staying at my grandparents. woke up early, and my grandpa took me on the back of his bicycle and one of those old fashioned metal milk cans in between his legs. and we would go to the nearby farm and get some fresh milk before the milk truck would come to pick it up. the farmer showed me how he milked the cows with the machine, and that was the first time i got to taste fresh milk, that i milked myself. the good old days :P

A lot of farms in the north and the east of the Netherlands have bio milk taps. Bring some clean glass bottles and you can fill your bottle straight out of the milktank, before it gets pasteurized in a processingplant

Halloween isn’t really a big thing here, although in recent years I’ve seen more and more celebrations/neighborhoods choosing to celebrate. In my neighborhood, for example, we do a big thing for Halloween but not on the 31st, rather we choose the weekend before/after so kids can have fun on a non-schoolnight. Sinterklaas is the biggest thing this season, because he arrived mid-November and then we have weeks of festivities. 0) I can stand this way of mentioning your sponsors. ;-) 1) This planetarium is an entry on my bucket-list. It happened to be closed when I was there (around 2000). The writer R. Blijstra wrote a bundle of fantasy stories (in Dutch), named after the first one: "het Planetarium van Otze Otzinga", in which not a mere planetarium but a miniature galaxy gets created. (Warning to people that can be upset regarding religion or sex: don't touch that book.) Other stories in this bundle inspired me to a song (in 1976), and that song has greatly influenced my own fantasy stories (since 2006). 2) I do like that hotel. 3) Not to be confused: Fryslân (the province named Friesland in Dutch), West-Friesland (part of the province shortly called Noord-Holland), Ostfriesland (part of the state of Lower Saxony in Germany, adjacent to the province of Groningen), Nordfriesland (part of the state of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany). 4) The region of Waterland (just north of Amsterdam) feels to me like a condensed version of Fryslân, with maybe the old part of Purmerend representing the old part of Leeuwarden. So if you visit the one region, you may get a feel of the other. Just for a teaser! - And if you want some "old Amsterdam" atmosphere in Fryslân (with far less fellow tourists), consider booking a stay in Esonstad. (No recommendation: I only know it from sailing past.)

Nice video, Jovie and Daan, People are reacting very positively to your homeland series of videos and I have a recommendation for you to consider; make homeland series videos longer, 35-45 minutes. I'm certain people will still watch them and it will help you gain more money from KZbin. Every province offers enough material to fill that amount of time but in the case of Friesland, cover some of its history, it is older than The Netherlands itself (that doesn't make sense, I know, but there's a certain truth about it). Cover some of its major companies (or commerce forms) and cultural aspects. For example, in Friesland the famous 11 city ice skating race/contest, or the traditional dresses that women in various very religious small towns wore in yester years. Every town has its own particular dress variety but there is a common, and known, ""Friese look"", alter these sections with.....basically food and restaurants for click bait. Watch some more professional travel style YT channels for ideas on how to put it together and tips for creating the right video footage. I understand that you are constrained in resources and time and you would maybe have to spend 4-5 days in a province but given the popularity of the series on your channel I think it would be worth the efforts in terms of growth and progress for your channel. Sorry, but seperating baby cows from their mothers at an early stage is just a commercial issue. The milk of the cows should go into production and not to feed the baby cows. Farms who apply to a green concept production have mother cows and baby cows stay together and have the baby cows being fed by the milk of the mother cows.

I believe true Frisian separatists exist, but they are very, very fringe (and very low in number). Not even the Fryske Nasjonale Partij ('Frisian National Party') advocates separatism, though they do strive for a higher degree of autonomy within the Netherlands. I think to most Dutch (Frisian and non-Frisian alike) the idea of a Frisian separation is just a joke, though toying with it as a hypothetical situation to explore some issues can sometimes be instructive (issues such as how would this independence work, would one or both of the new states be better or worse off, financially, etc.) .
