Hi folks, here’s the recipe to a comforting rasam that you can very easily make at home. Hot, spicy and tangy this warming broth features Tamil and Andhra influences, mirroring the ancestry of my wife, Sreedevi. This is perfect, drunk as a soup after a heavy meal, or delightfully satisfying with some steaming hot rice, a simple vegetable and a touch of pickle. We also drink it in copious amounts especially when fighting the cold, the pepper and spices in this concoction providing warming relief. Hope you enjoy this one. Stay safe and happy cooking.
Ingredients to make Rasam
2 medium-sized ripe tomatoes
1 bunch fresh coriander
Curry leaves, a fistfull
2 tsp peppercorns
2 tsp cumin seed (jeera)
7 to 8 dry red chillies
9 to 10 cloves of garlic
2 tsp organic jaggery powder (optional)
1 roundel tamarind, soaked in water/ 1 tbsp tamarind pulp
1 ltr water
2 tsp salt
For seasoning
1 tbsp ghee
1 tsp mustard seeds
A pinch of asafoetida

There is an almost Zen like peace to Shree's appearance and demeanour. No matter how agitated one might be, looking at her smile puts away a lot of that pent up tension. I must say KA, it was a brilliant idea introducing her and bringing her forth to this channel. Thank you lock down!!!

I like the beetroot with coconut dry prep with Rasam and rice. MTR rasam powder that I use doesn't taste great. Will try from scratch using this video as reference. Thanks!

Rasam comes to our Rescue...when we're running out of cooking supplies and find were are leftover with peppers,cumins, tamarind and coriander leaves.... The essence of pounded spices release soothening warmth on our taste buds. Rasam irrespective of the multiple types followed in different cuisines of South India, it just rejuvenates our system after every Big meal or with simple rice and omlette with onions and chilles...as humble as it is. Rice, Rasam n Omlette... Just Heavenly.... What more can make meals better???... Especially in this Lockdown.

Come on Man, why are you so parochial ? Didn't you hear Bella, Anna, Saaru, Palya and Uppinkaayi in Kannada. Sabzi in Hindi. Both mentioned Tamil and Tamil Nadu. Let us celebrate all languages and cultures. Let us be Indians. If everyone starts thinking he is from this state or that, then who will fight CHEENI on the border? When Army officer Santhosh Babu was MARTYRED, Nobody saw him as a person from a particular state speaking a particular language. For us he is an Indian, we lost. Mr. Kripal Ammanna and Smt Shree Ammanna belong to India.

in Andhra, we use more Jeelakarra . we are Brahmin family, most of the traditional Brahmin family can not finish dinner without Rasam :) After I come to Singapore, I realized Rasam is a topmost recipe for all Tamil guys.

Hi Kripal, I am malayalee residing in US. My husband went to BMS college and had an andhra room mate that used to make rasam every day. I myself like buttermilk or moru in my rice. He loves rasam. I have always used rasam powder. Today is easter sunday. Because of lock down by the time I went to grocery store fresh meats were sold out. So I thought of experimenting your wife's recipe. Didn't have jaggery but had coconut suger. Wow flavor was amazing! Will not go back to store bought rasam powders. Going to share this recipe with my friends who are in quarantine with Covid19. Hats of to your wife. Will love to see more of her cooking videos.

Cosmopolitan atmosphere at home. Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Thanjavur is also my mother's place. Shree might be knowing about Bombay sweets stall in Thanjavur. A very old and famous sweet Shop in Thanjavur. Established in 1949. It's my uncle shop. If you get a chance to visit Thanjavur. Please do visit

Wow really? Everytime we go to Thanjavur, we make it a point to buy dry gulab jamun from Bombay sweets. Thanjavur for us is almost synonymous with dry gulab jamun, thanks to Bombay sweets!

@@MrJai1987 I'm from Chennai and Chennaiites pride ourselves as having the best mysore pak (the Sri Krishna sweets one which melts in your mouth). Although on your recommendation, I'll make sure I buy a packet of mysore pak on my next trip to Tanjore. Cheers😊

Thanks man ! At 60 plus you reminded me of my mother who used to make Rasam. I experimented with the details of the process and wow I hit it close to 80 % . Matter of time and will improve. THANKS

This recipe was excellent. Both of you have a big fan club here in Northern California !! Our daughter hates rasam and watches your videos regularly. She showed it to my wife and we tried Sri's recipe and it turned out really delicious and our daughter ate and drank the rasam till the last dot. We look forward to more of Sri's traditional recipes. And both of you form a great team. My wife and daughter appreciate your comments on how men should help in the kitchen. 😀
