South Canara has its share of seafood eateries, but then, there are some that have endeared themselves to diners over decades by virtue of being true to the traditions they follow. One such popular seafood stop is Hotel Mahalaxmi, in the fishing village of Malpe, about six kilometres from Udupi, where Mrs. Pushpavati Bangera, the matriarch of this family run restaurant that began as a tiny hut, has been cleaning the fish and preparing the masala for the fish curry and fry each day for the last 60 years. I catch up with her and her son, Vishwanath Bangera before I sit down to a satisfying fish thali meal.

I am visiting this hotel from past 20 years plus...the taste is still the same as vishu sirs moms does masalas by herself.. many times i have travelled to Mahalaxmi only to have meal from all over bangalore! A best ever 🐠 fry ever u get in malpe.. u can find many fish hotels, but not as mahalakshmi! The rates are also reasonable and they maintain the same.. a complete value for money... At last can say the best of best fish fry i never had in my life time!

I usually skip Seafood/Fish based episodes as a rule but make an exception, if it's from the stables of FoodLoversTV. It's isn't about the dishes TBH but FOMO. The fear of missing out watching another gem that I believe will be full of information, brilliant cinematography and ofc the virtual visit. I wish I could hug Mrs. Pushpavati for ten minutes. This place has been our favourite from past 16 yrs. we started visiting when it was a small tiled roof and now this . Also ANAND is not a variety but a brand of rice . It’s from Anandpuram on the way to shivamogga. The variety is JAYA GIDDA which is white coloured rice.
