When my Dad was 95 he fell off his bicycle in 20 degree weather (after riding 21 miles) and broke his hip. While in the hospital they offered him fish and chips and banana cream pie for dinner. He was so disgusted, I ended up cooking for him and bringing it into the hospital for 10 wks till he could come home. The only healthy meal was breakfast where he was offered oatmeal and an orange. Hospitals need to step up their game.

There's a huge amount of stress in my life that I can't control so it's heartening to hear from Dr Greger that I can still live a long and healthy life provided I take care of what I eat. I have been WFPB and slim for over 4 years now and it's increased my quality of life (and mood/mental health) no end. I look good and am healthy for the first time in my life at 58. I've just finished reading Dr Greger's How not to Age, very clearly written so don't be put off by the scientific content. Bottom line: just eat a variety of whole plant food, that's the best you can do to live a long, healthy and happier life.

Dr. Greger cited flax seed oil for arthritic knees....so I tried it, not imagining that there could be any relief to my aching arthritic knees. However, the flax seed oil almost immediately took the pain away from my knees!!!!!!!!!! I am using it still with excellent results. God bless you, Dr. Greger!!!!!!!!

I am a 63 year old cancer survivor. (went through surgery, chemo and radiation) I can honesty say that I have never felt better since I went WFPB. I had been a vegetarian---but giving up dairy made a HUGE difference to me. I feel great! I so hope Dr. Greger can write a book about cancer. I would pre order it!

Chuck Carrol knows the game - just keep’em talking. People like Michael Greger, Neil Barnard, Peter Rogers, John McDougall, etc. have too much knowledge to dispense in one interview. The longer the better. Just keep them talking. Great job, Chuck 👊🏼

You can tell this book is for young people. Because the print is very small. I have gotten more from these interviews and now have my Brazil nut every morning. I have my teaspoon of Ceylon cinnamon, I put cacao in my coffee, fat with my greens, having my black cumin, berries every morning. We started eating plant-based 21/2 years ago. I am 83 and my husband is 99. I have the how not to age book and like it for reference but difficult to read tiny type. I didn’t like Kindle for reading it.

This was a nice talk. I'm a big fan of Dr. Greger and the Exam Room podcast/KZbin channel. I'd like to add my thoughts on why so many people choose 80-years-old as the time they'd like to die, as I'm one of them. So not everyone wants to live forever, or even to 100. There are those of us who can't wait until this life is over with. The thought of having to live with the advanced stages of climate change and the extreme heat is very scary. Not everyone is wealthy, and the thought of having to work until 70 and beyond really sucks. The thought of having to live in a theocratic fascist society is super depressing. Having to live among those with a disgustingly large amount of wealth, while so many of us have to toil away in jobs we hate and with incomes that barely pay the bills is incredibly unfair and gross. And on and on. So yeah, many of us just want to hit 80 and die and get out of this crappy existence and be done with it all.

How much research was done on the happiness/depression factor? Sounds odd to me. Studies show that (for example) people with ACEs (adverse childhood experiences) die 20 percent sooner than their peers. Are you attributing that 20 percent to poor life choices? An old (ex) friend used to cry to me in our 20s that her father was killing himself with his alcoholism and chain smoking. Literally cry. My parents, her mother, and all the adult friends are all gone now except for her father, who never stressed anything and didn't mind upsetting others with his habits. He's well into his 90s now. That said, I'm all vegan, do yoga and lift weights. I feel pretty well but I've had health issues and wonder if my alcoholic narcissist neighbor who eats meat all the time will live longer than me because he has no conscious, no empathy.

Stress can cause us to prepare less, take less care for our environment and cram whatever we see in our mouths, all which lead us to making unhealthy choices. People have been dealing with stress for a very long time. Much more than today in many, many ways. I’ll take a more stressful life and a healthier lifestyle any day. Although stress to the body does deplete magnesium, and we all know the effects of low magnesium. You’re going to outlive your neighbor. Just look both ways before crossing the street and stay inside if you hear gunshots. If you’re eating pretty well and still running into health hurdles, you may enjoy Peter Rogers MD’s KZbin channel. I was 60% there but now I see things more clearly. Simplicity. I was missing the simplicity. Stay well, friend.

I’d have to defer to Peter Rogers MD’s KZbin channel on this one. He’s the biochemistry king. Blew my mind of fructose being transported through the portal vein from the small intestine to the liver, entering glycolysis at the four-carbon stage, overwhelming the liver and being stored as fat. People who have to use curse words and bleeped out words with no sense of humor forgot to read this 2012 study: Vegetarians displayed elevated prevalence rates for depressive disorders, anxiety disorders and somatoform disorders. Due to the matching procedure, the findings cannot be explained by socio-demographic characteristics of vegetarians (e.g. higher rates of females, predominant residency in urban areas, high proportion of singles). The analysis of the respective ages at adoption of a vegetarian diet and onset of a mental disorder showed that the adoption of the vegetarian diet tends to follow the onset of mental disorders.

Seeing that we’re living in a world designed to make us fat and sick for profits while pretending pills and surgeries make everything better might be enough to make all who see it appear and sound mentally unstable.

@@bitfinesse But these people are not fat and sick they are slim and health conscious. 2014 study "Our results revealed that a vegetarian diet is related to a lower BMI and less frequent alcohol consumption. Moreover, our results showed that a vegetarian diet is associated with poorer health (higher incidences of cancer, allergies, and mental health disorders), a higher need for health care, and poorer quality of life. Therefore, public health programs are needed in order to reduce the health risk due to nutritional factors."

I can offer a possible reason - many become vegetarian or vegan because they discover how animals are treated, watch videos on youtube of them being killed, having their babies taken off them for milk etc. That is so depressing, and once you know/see it with your own eyes, it is not easy to stop caring about it. Knowing that it goes on continually and you cannot do anything to stop it. When you care so much and are helpless to do anything meaningful it impacts mental health. It's a huge burden to deal with daily because it's all around you, the truth of what goes on - tv, shops etc you are constantly exposed to the reminder of the cruelty that you wish you could stop in the world. Compassion burnout!

@@VeganFriendlyNutritionist I have many farms where I live and you can bring a camera because I don't see any animals being treated badly, perhaps you are talking about factory farms but you don't have to buy that stuff. 100% of all vegans who buy the majority of their food in a public supermarket are responsible for more killing of animals and destroying the environment than those people who grow their own omnivore food of their own choices on their own property. Tell everyone you know not to mow their lawn because the tires and blades are killing millions of living creatures, and don't put bed sheets in the clothes dryer because they are killing millions of microscopic dust mites, don't walk on the sidewalk since you are crushing various tiny insects. However, please tell your friends to get termite treatment for their home because if those termites eat the structure of their home no insurance will cover the cost.

Dr. Gregor, I enjoy listening to you speak and believe what you have to say is worth listening to. But with all due respect, I could have appreciated this talk without your foul language, profanity, and taking the Lord's name in vain. In short, if you're going to make your living speaking in public, you'd better learn to clean up your language.

For all the talk that Greger talks, none of his specific food recommendations do jack squat to someone who eats a diversity of whole foods already, so he’s little different from all the “sexy BS” out there, notwithstanding his (biased) reading of supposedly scientific literature.

Is freeze dried strawberry powder same as eating fresh strawberries in terms of nutrients?

It is pretty close. Fresh picked is best of course, but we can't all have that. Freeze dried has many benefits similar, if frozen soon after picked.
