Theorists, for the love of science I have eaten a Christmas tree TWICE and tried wearing bread loafs on my hands for gloves. There is almost NOTHING I won't do to learn. That includes using my dryer to try to cook my food. Today we are trying to answer the question of "Will it cook?" - dryer edition! Be sure to let me know in the comments what other hacks I should try to prove or debunk!

I don’t think “Yeah” is an independent clause😅 Ive pasted the google definition below: comma splice nounGRAMMAR an instance of using a comma to link two independent clauses (which should instead be linked by a colon, semicolon, or conjunction), as in he loves cooking, he's great at making curries. Hope this helps! 🩷😄

A few things to add, as someone who has previously worked in the domestic appliance industry for 3 years: The dryer you're using in the video is a vented dryer. These are the most inefficient dryers there are, so that would factor into your calculations about how much things cost. Condenser dryers are likely to be only slightly more efficient but release the same heat, whilst heat pump dryers are likely to require longer, but use half the electricity. Repeating this test with heat pump might make it win out, albeit with longer cooking times. It also means that going into the future, this idea is likely to become harder and harder, as vented dryers are being phased out. Companies like Bosch (BSH group, so Bosch, Siemens and Neff) no longer produce any vented dryers, at least here in the UK, Beko group make *one* model, with the only other company making them being Whirlpool group (Hotpoint, Indesit, Whirlpool, all of which are pretty awful). So, repeating this test with a different type of dryer would be interesting to see how it compares, especially as in the future it's likely to be harder to buy yourself a vented dryer. The important thing to note though is making sure food doesn't get into the condenser unit or heat pump unit, nor the heater itself. You *will* set your dryer on fire if you're not careful. It's not something to repeat at home. (This is actually why many Whirlpool group dryers were recalled; fluff would get into the heater and condenser, and thus set on fire. This is not something you want to play with further than some experiments.) Finally, it would be interesting to grab one of those shoe rack accessories for the dryer. That would likely be fairly interesting to compare, seeming as it'd be right in the middle of the machine, receiving consistent air.

@LucasSaturn
@LucasSaturn 2 жыл бұрын
It definitely depends moreso on the type of dryer you have, but I just wouldn't risk it, seeming as it's likely you have a perfectly good cooker you can use! The risk is if you have a spillage or rip in the bag, in which case then you risk food bits getting all over the inside of the machine, which is then potentially a hazard. The filters are there to stop things going through, sure, but I can guarantee that, at least in my experience, nobody cleans their filters properly, and so there's more risk of it going through.

VERY IMPORTANT!! I told my grandmother about this, and she told me about an old drier she has. it came with a sweater rack that can be fitted to the inside and you can lay things on it and they stay stationary in the center while everything else spins around it!! NO! DON'T do this! it's NOT safe. you can technically "cook" food in dishwashers and dryers and stuff, but the internal temperature doesn't get high enough long to make the food safe for consumption. it may LOOK cooked but IT IS NOT. ann reardon did an experiment with this and watched the temp every moment it was being "cooked" with actual equipment and showed how it can give you food poisoning bc it is undercooked by quite a lot. even tho the temp inside the appliance may get to a certain point, the food doesn't. it wouldn't surprise me if this next week is pretty rough for you two. you MIGHT squeak by ok, but you are rolling the dice with this one just like ppl not cooking food thoroughly in a regular way roll the dice. not to mention you might make someone ELSE sick by telling ppl this worked. it didn't work. like i said it LOOKS fine but it has not been safely cooked. someone out there will end up with the short stick trying this.

I highly disagree, unfortunately. The biggest focus should have been on the temperature and safety. He at no point actually measured the temp of the dryer or the food and absolutely should have, especially steak, to see if it was actually safe and it might not be. It's an incredibly unscientific experiment compared to their other videos.

@@wubzt3r i doubt they would have taken a bite if they didnt think it was somewhat safe. for example, they didnt try to take a bite out of the first steak they threw in there. and unless one of them was allergic to something they put in(which would be stupid), they most likely might have had a little bit of indigestion, if something went wrong. and they did mention the temperature of the dryer(125-140 F, 51-60 C). the steak they did take bites out of looked pre-cooked as well, unless you want to ignorantly overlook that fact....

With the "Vaccuum Smoothy" idea, that could actually work. The only downside I can see to it is that the smoothy might melt from all the heat vacuums tend to generate. I know that some blenders can literally make soup (including the heating part) so maybe baking cream of something soup in a vacuum could work?

There should have been one final test performed - would using a dryer sheet have affected the taste of the food... It was noted that the laundry was "dry - but slightly shrimpy", and that "maybe next time I should throw in a dryer sheet". The big question is that since SOME of the shrimp smell got out, would the reverse not also be true if anything else was added?

Honestly, Mat described it as a slow cooker at the beginning of the episode, but with the immediate transfer of heat through conduction, the forced circular motion and the need for a bag to make it usable, this is essentially just a dry Sous Vide. Like, vacuum seal it and sear it up later, I'm sure you could legitimately trick someone into believe the steak was put into a Sous Vide rather than a dryer.

I saw someone make soup by putting a heating elements and 2 food blenders in a shop-vac. A smoothie might actually work, but the problem is that once the food's in the canister of a shop-vac, it stops being cycled around

The only problem I saw was that internal temperatures weren’t taken,especially with the shrimp. The steak wasn’t a big deal,but the temperature should have been taken for the shrimp because it can look cooked but not be a safe temperature.
@jacobawojtowicz
@jacobawojtowicz 2 жыл бұрын
I thought that, but the last cycle of a dryer is usually a cool down. So would the internal temperature accurately reflect the cookedness?
@Wilted.lycoris
@Wilted.lycoris 2 жыл бұрын
@@jacobawojtowicz That is a good point, you’d have to stop the cycle right before the cooldown to take the temperature. Though,I’d probably do it to be on the safe side,y’know,if I even ate shrimp in the first place.
@blanktom6049
@blanktom6049 2 жыл бұрын
I would be more concerned with the steak to be honest. It's going to take much longer for it to come up to temperature. All that time, the heat is going to help any bacteria in the meat grow. Shrimp are a lot smaller so they will come to temp quicker.
@Wilted.lycoris
@Wilted.lycoris 2 жыл бұрын
@@blanktom6049 That’s a fair point as well. I was only thinking of the shrimp because of the chance of Salmonella, but any food born illness due to poor preparation is bad.

have to also remember though how long they're cooking. lower temperatures are safer if you're cooking for a full hour compared to the like 30 seconds or 2 minutes you'll often cook shrimp. It's like with sous vide which also cooks these proteins around similar temps and durations.
