Hi Chef John! We've been making this for the last few months.. this is the BEST recipe and super easy!! The only difference we do us we add a LOT more cilantro and stock instead of broth, and skip the cayenne, double the cumin. My husband has mastered this dish, and since it's one of my favorites, I win!! THANK YOU for your video's!!

Used this recipe to base mine on last night. So good I can't let it go today. So cold here that it is all I can think about. I only ate half as eating two cans of bean seemed like a bad plan. Hard not to keep eating it. Even the cat and dog were salivating. I don't eat bacon much for my personal health issues, but added a ham seasoning flavor packet. Awesome!

Third time making this soup, but I tripled it this time. Used only 9 slices of local smoked bacon (very flavorful but not too fatty) and still removed ~4T of bacon grease before adding the onions. We always use Mexican oregano (if you can find it- it's really fantastic!). Using a spider, I removed about 1/2 beans/bacon/veg and then immersion blended the soup in the pot before adding the reserved mix back in to finish simmering. We prefer a mix of chicken & vegetable broth, very little water unless it simmers down too much. This batch was made pretty much as written, until the very end (of course): We added a splash of cider vin for the final stir. About half was packed up for the week's food prep lunches. ALWAYS a flavorful and healthy soup! We use a variety of garnishes- roasted elote-style corn is my fave. If you don't like bacon... Make something else ;)

This is one of the best black bean soup recipes I've ever come across. All the other posts seem to be between 3 and 11 years old, are you still alive? Brilliant answer BTW: re the hole-in-the-spoon thing. Very clever to post the answer down in the comments like you were one of the huddled masses I would have never figured that out.

I once was poaching some eggs and had a brain fart and tossed my slotted spoon into a sink with a small mountain of dirty dishes in it. I grabbed the wooden spoon with a hole in it to fish out my eggs. It worked. That's really the only time I ever used it for a specific task. I do want to thank you for clearing up my concerns about bringing food to a potluck where vegetarians/vegans might show up. It's kinda been a worsening problem lately but thanks to your intelligent guidance I think that I will now have a lot of options that I had given up.

Noticed a bag of Black Beans in the pantry. Soaked overnight I gave them a rinse, course chopped 1 1/2 large yellow onions, black pepper, oregano, cumin, red pepper flakes, 2 tps ea chicken & vegetable BTB Seasoning base, good shaka shaka garlic powder & 1 fire roasted dried poblano pepper. Cooked above for 45 min while shoveling snow, used immersion blender to thicken soup, blop of sour cream and I had a wonderful no meat meal. Oh, 1 bunch of green onions, whites at beginning, greens at end. Sweetness from onions was perfect.
