This is one of my FAVOURITE Chetna recipes (and I’ve made a good amount) and definitely in my top recipe list overall! Thank you Chetna 😊 My family also loved it and kept going back for seconds/thirds. The garlic flavour is just so deep and complex and addictive (10 cloves plus 3 more at the end! It’s for the garlic people!!) It’s also very creamy but no cream, just from the beans pressure cooking and then slow cooking (but I started eating it before the full slow cooking time and it was still good). I made it with black beans (ural dal/mapte) just because they are cheaper/easier to find than black lentils and I think it’s very similar. It’s a bit like dal makhani (creamy black lentils) but lighter and simpler to make. Still can’t believe there’s so much flavour with so few spies, just garam masala, chili powder, cumin. (Side note, I also love Chetna’s dal makhani recipe also on KZbin and have made it lots of times!) This is also similar to Mexican refried beans - with lime and other ingredients, it definitely can be part of a burrito bowl. We ate it with rice, tortillas, and avocados, but the simplest and maybe best way is to add water and having it as a stew/soup. I feel like keeping it in the fridge makes the flavour even better too.

Oh YEASSS!! Black lentils and Garam Masala are two of my faves!! I know what I will be cooking this weekend. I love slow cooked dishes… simmering away on the back of the stove. This, to me, is warm winter deliciousness!! AND garlic, cumin, and coriander… 👩‍🍳💋. This is a great video and an awesome recipe Chetna!! Thanks for sharing your skill and charm. Much appreciated 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary🇨🇦

Agreed, the longer cooking time does make the dhal creamier. I always make big batches of dhal, because it freezes really well, and tastes fresh when you defrost and top with fresh green coriander (even leave the tarka until serving each time). Great for those days when you know you won't have time to cook and need spicy food, or simply don't want to cook!

This looks sooooo simple! I love it! (Well, I'll let you know if I 'love it' after I've made it, but the simplicity makes it a dish to try!) I suppose using rinsed, tinned beans would just save the pre-soak time? Wondering if cooking it in the oven would save the worry of stirring every 30 minutes? Guess I'll find out - it's a lazy kind of day today! 😁 *#FoodWithChetna** **#Vegan** **#IndianCooking*

Chetna - this recipe looks amazing. I do have a question. When initially cooking the lentils and kidney beans are you using pressure cooker or just in pot?
@kh23797
@kh23797 2 жыл бұрын
@Lynda Blair ... Just in the pot here - that water level is way above that suitable for pressure cooking. The long cooking time is also way over what the beans would need in an Instant Pot, even if your skipped long-soaking them (when it would be around half an hour). Mind you, this recipe would surely lend itself to an Instant Pot adaptation!

Just a thought. I think the beans cook much faster without the salt. 1/2 hour to 40 minutes....if they're soaked, even faster (especially the lentils.) You can add the salt later! Give it a try. (I mean in the pressure cooker. Slow cook later yes!)

I've had this at restaurants and know it tastes great.. but, I doubt it retains the degree of nutritional value as compared to cooking it 1-2 hours (versus 4-hours) and also cooking only until beans and lentils are almost tender, then mashing some of that to achieve a creamy texture.
