Joey Votto hit .400 ... for half a season. In this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, we look at one of the Joey Votto 2016 highlights -- hitting .400 in the second half. In this video, we look at the mechanics that can generate .400 batting average seasons, including BABIP (Batting Average on Balls in Play), Strikeouts, and Home Runs. The players that represent those qualities in today's game include Hanser Alberto, Nelson Cruz, and Yoan Moncada.
Some historical seasons examined include Ted Williams 1941, Tony Gwynn 1994, and Chipper Jones 2008. In fact, there's a serious Ted Williams Joey Votto parallel we can draw. Of course, this study of half a season has been released in anticipation of the MLB 2020 season, wherein each team will play an MLB 60 game schedule. Shenanigans are possible. We could some Cody Bellinger .400 baseball, Mike Trout .400 baseball, or Christian Yelich .400 baseball. But the odds are still quite slim.
Still, Joey Votto shows that it's still possible to hit .400 over a shortened stretch. The days of the .400 hitter might be gone, but we could see a glimpse of it if we're lucky in 2020. And if you want to see lucky, wait until you hear the tale of Billy Grabarkewitz.

I’ve been hoping for a Joey Votto video for a while, he is one of my absolute favourite players ever and he is certainly a unique player considering his position. He is an OBP king at a position that is better known for home run leaders. Yet, he makes it work incredibly well and he probably should’ve won MVP over Stanton in 2017. Loved the video!

@David Montgomery more like the voters almost stole it from Stanton. 23 more HRs, 17 more runs, 32 more RBIs, but a bunch of noodle arm guys value the 49 more walks Votto had that likely led to very few runs. Don't want to vote for Stanton because HR's = instant PEDs, right? OBP means nothing if you can't run, because the defense forgets about you now that you're a runner and not a hitter. But hey you're little league coach told you a walk is as good as a hit, so that's universally valid.

I would say the most recent serious flirtation with hitting .400 was by Todd Helton in 2000. After slipping under the .400 mark on June 11th, he reached a high of .399 on August 18th (the '94 season ended with Gwynn sitting at .394 on August 11th) before trending back down to a still-bonkers .372 at season's end, a 40-game stretch where he hit "only" .295.

Always been extremely underrated mostly because he's in Cincinnati. I'm so grateful to the scout(s) that discovered Joey Votto and to the Reds for taking a chance and drafting him. Though he may not retire with definite hall of fame numbers the MLB Hall of Fame would be completely illegitimate if Joey doesn't get in. I honestly believe he is one of, if not the best pure hitter in all of Reds history and while I recognize my heavy bias being such a die hard Reds fan I would absolutely put him in the top 100 best hitters in MLB history. The dude is literally a once in a generation talent and it's a complete shame that he has never gotten the recognition nationally that he deserves 💯

I really loved this video. When I first started watching you over a year ago I was hoping to see a Joey Votto video. I feel he is one of the most underrated players in the league. My favorite line, "the sky is blue, the grass is green, Joey Votto and Ted Williams getting walks." lmao
