On July 23, 2019, the Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees played an instant classic. The Twins Yankees July 23 highlights flooded the internet. There was talk about it being the MLB best game ever, or at least the MLB game of the year 2019. So we'll definitely be seeing some Yankees vs Twins highlights.
This episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, isn't trying to make this a competition. Instead, we're going to celebrate some of the amazing occurrences in this Twins Yankees game. The game featured heroics from Didi Gregorius, who destroys the Minnesota Twins. In fact, we'll examine some insane Didi Gregorius vs Twins stats. Miguel Sano showed up as well, striking twice with the classic Miguel Sano home run.
Some players profiled include Nelson Cruz, Luis Arraez, Mitch Garver, Adam Ottavino, Aroldis Chapman, Gleyber Torres, Mike Tauchman, and Gio Urshela, but we'll also be examining the teams as a whole. 2019 played host to a Yankees Twins home run chase, culminating in a Twins single season home run record.
The game ends, SPOILER ALERT (although you probably know this) with a tremendous Aaron Hicks catch, preventing Max Kepler from walking the game off. And thus concludes the beautiful epic matchup.

As a Twins fan, I remember having the exact same reaction as you described when Kepler hit that. It felt like it was in slow motion and I thought. This is it. All this chaotic baseball is finally ending here. Either Hicks catches it and ends the game or he drops it and the Twins win. Very surreal moment.

U can't really look at most pitching stats from that era (before 1920, "the dead ball era") the same way. Hell, b4 then the league leader in homeruns was usually in the mid teens somewhere, sometimes less than 10. There were only 3 seasons where someone hit over 20 HR's, with the record being 27.

We have a Yankees chat text thread in my family, and there’s almost always at least one of us who will do the heroic task of continuing to watch or listen to even potential blowouts. If a comeback starts brewing, that person will text everyone to say, ‘The game’s getting close now: you should turn it back on.’ I was the lucky one who kept that game on while my brothers and parents in other parts of the country stopped watching when it looked like a blowout and started doing other things. At that point, when you bring everyone back, you’re hoping for a win just so you don’t get grief for bringing them back to the fold for a game they’d already psychologically accepted as a loss. I received no complaints this night.

I remember watching this game. As an Astros fan, I was passively rooting for the Yankees. But like any true baseball fan, you smile and shake your head out of respect after a catch and a game like that. Moments like this are why I love this channel. Baseball isn’t chest pounding and cooler dumps. It’s wry smiles and tips of the hat.

@@riotduckdotcom I heard they found a better way to make baseballs so now the core (the pill) is perfectly centered, which means less wobble, which means less air resistance, which means more tators. There were so many HR records shattered last year that it put the steroid era to shame. 1.40 HR's per game compared to just 1.17 during peak roid era. Of the top 20 teams that hit the most HR's in a season since 1961, 10 came in 2019 alone, including the top 4.

Personally one of the best games I've ever watched was Nats vs Brewers in 2019 with the Brewers winning 15-14 in the 14th inning. There were so many comebacks, Yelich had such a crazy game and it all came down to no batters left on the bench and a pitcher having to pinch-hit. It even made the wild card win sweeter because the Nats played the Brewers 6 times that year and lost 4 of them.

Great stuff as always. There's just one thing I wanted to point out which was the aftermath of this game. The Yankees finished the season with 103 wins, while the Twins finished with 101. Had the Twins won on Kepler's double, they would have finished with 102 wins each and an even head-to-head record of 3-3. This means that home-field advantage in the division series might have gone to the Twins (I'm not sure how this is calculated after a tied record) which could have dramatically shifted the tide of the series if the Twins had been able to play the first two games at home. Who knows though. I wonder what the expected batting average on that double was.

Nobody talking about that Hicks catch in here. Perfect positioning, great reaction, perfect route to the ball, the dive to his throwing arm side. A thing of beauty. If he was one step to his left the twins win this game.

I've commented on this video before, as I was the first person to ever notch a view on it, but I remember this game so clearly among a sea of both fun and agonizing Yankee moments during the late 2010s. I was at my uncle's house in New Jersey and I watched every pitch. I haven't had that much fun watching baseball since that insane game in the 2017 WS when the final score was like 13-12 and the two sides kept trading monster homers.

@@FoolishBaseball (Tagging you for this part so you see it) a video on either the 1916 A's, and how they fell from the Elites in just two years to the worst winning percentage in modern history (or just on Connie Mack in general. Yeah, that sounds like a better idea), or a vid on the 1935 Braves, who I'd call the "Worst team ever with a true superstar" (said superstar being Wally Berger). If that isn't reason enough, Babe Ruth playe on this team! (for about a month and a half)

Yankees fan in MN here who was at this game. I got really good seats for my Dad for his birthday, and he spent half the game complaining that he wanted to leave after we went down 8-2. Both the 9th inning homerun and walkoff diving catch from Hicks were unforgettable. I felt pretty drained as I got home at 1:00am though. The easy stress-free win the next night was much appreciated after witnessing that!
