Don't judge hockey by old VHS rips on KZbin, when those games were broadcast you could absolutely see the puck. The glowing puck was a gimmick that Fox did when they got the rights to broadcast the NHL to help newbies follow the play. TV screens were smaller then on average and people who didn't watch hockey had trouble tracking the small black dot, but people who watched hockey regularly had no trouble tracking it and detested it so it was quickly abandoned
@zmothersbaugh2477Ай бұрын
The only way to grow a game is to turn casual watchers into avid watchers and non-watchers in casual watchers. I think the theory on widescreen makes a lot of sense, and you can't say "I think this is a classic example of correlation does not equal causation." based on nothing. There is a difference between saying "it COULD be correlation is not causation" and saying you think it is. The only way we could know is by actually doing the calculations which is very easily attainable. They have statistical tests for determining the variability of it which is quantifying how much widescreen impacted it. I also like to add that since most of baseball is a duel, it's more dramatic for the framing to focus on the subject matters while being able to track the two participants. 4 by 3 fits baseball better since yes, we weren't being slapped by the add banners on both sides of the batter, and also the two duelists take up more screen space, exaggerating and heightening their slight movements. Directors and cinematographer have been backforth about lens, focal, film stock, aspect ratio and such for a long, long time. These details do matter in the long run, to decide which spot comes out on top.

I hadn't thought about it until I read a comment here but it reminded me of how I became a baseball fan. Back in 2016 I'd have college assignments to do at night, and the world series was on for a good week there. Since there was no pitch clock and not even the rule where a reliever has to face 3 batters, the game had a way slower pace, and so it was perfect for those nights where i was actually busy with something else. Baseball is all about the expectation of seeing homeruns, and big plays but usually there's a lot of waiting and a lot of time between those plays, which is why a lot of the commentators we remember as the greats had this knack for telling stories while the game was taking place. It's always been a sport where if you're a casual fan just grasping the basics of the game, you can enjoy it like this, just waiting for the times the ball actually gets put in play. I know there are plenty more nuances to it all now, but at first that's how i enjoyed it myself. And that's the point, you can completely enjoy a ballgame by just having it somewhere as background noise, and a lot of us do that constantly nowadays, so maybe baseball has that same spot it's had for itself: that thing you can listen for hours without paying that much attention. You might get hooked on the nuances like a lot of us have, but it's not necessary.

My first impression of how much better HD was than SD was in the late 2000's watching an NBA game. I could actually read the tattoos on black guys where I never could before. Great video! Hockey definitely got the biggest boost in quality of broadcast.

The before/after for hockey is crazy. Kind of surprised it hasn't gotten more popular. I've been watching more of it lately than I have my entire life.
@KC2MFCsАй бұрын
Your mixing correlation and causation. Sure the image didn't enhance the viewing experience of the game, but that's not why TV viewership for Baseball fell. It was becuase the pace of play was too slow. Also, home runs and strikeouts just aren't compelling if they happen in such abundance like they do now. A good game is one where you see lots of offense (seeing eye singles, gap-splitting doubles, even inside-the-park HRs) and defense (amazing catches, throws, even the hidden ball trick, etc.) That's what makes the game compelling. Without that, it's just a bunch of very athletic and well-paid guys standing around for two hours or more. Sports is about movement and action, the less we see of that in Baseball, the less people will want to see it. Nuff said.

I agree and I wonder what a modern day Massachusetts rules game would look like. The distance to first was shorter, runners could run anywhere on the field in between bases and outs were made by hitting runners with a throw. It was more of a runners game with more and prolonged action in the field.
@RocketMan-vc8srАй бұрын
No, viewership is down because fewer people are watching television. The nba is also having the same issues with viewership. When the nba had Jordan, the finals were averaging 20-30 million viewers. These days, the nba finals barely crack over 10 million.

Brother, I watched this in landscape on my 16:9 Sony Xperia and I could not stop agreeing with you the entire time.. Nicely done. I was a huge fan of baseball being a dying sport since it's inception, and surviving the HD 4K wide screen era and thriving on the portrait mode video format. Long live landscape mode. Sure I love the shorts, but I prefer to turn my phone and watch it hands free. I might watch more of these on my computer or TV, too.

Baseball has an advantage over all the other sports though: It’s actually a GREAT game worth watching. It’s our national pastime. I’d happily still watch it on a black and white console TV from the ‘60s if I had to.
@amonocerosАй бұрын
It's also the best audio sport. Basketball, football, soccer, hockey are all underwhelming in that format. Baseball? Someone can hit the ball hard, you can hear the crack of the bat, the announcer saying, "and there it goes to deep right!", and if you weren't paying attention, you are well before the play is completed. Most of the other sports? If you're not paying close attention, all you're getting are replays.
@williamjasper2734Ай бұрын
Solution: make home plate umpire camera the default view. That way, you get a panoramic view if the field, and can see all the players and bases, as well as keeping the action in the center of the screen.

Excellent video, up until that vertical video flim flam. It’s a little too narrow for me. Fascinating point of view about Hi Def making other sports more enjoyable to watch while baseball remain unchanged. Then, in my opinion, baseball going towards a three true outcome style of play made what was being shown less entertaining. Also, I don’t like bat flips and get off my lawn.

MLB could become a huge TV winner if it could do what it does on PC, showing the box scores next to the game. Having all that info right in your view as you watch the game is absolutely great! As long as the screen is large enough that should be possible to do.

Anecdotal and not representative of the common viewer, or even contending with your premise, but I LOVE 16:9. I played outfield through college and I love seeing the routes OFs take, seeing one of the edge OFers converge with two IFs in the triangle of death, seeing the full scope of a relay. Getting that wide view of a CFer playing a ball in the gap or even tracking a ball to the wall, it gives you a better appreciation of what they're doing. It adds a lot to *my* viewing experience, but probably not much to most. A good example happened today. The Royals vs Orioles wild card game. MJ Melendez absolutely misplayed the heck out of a ball where the batter literally threw his bat at the ball. The production/camera man fumbled hard so we got a very narrow view of the play and one second ball hit next second MJ fell down. Because of the miscommunication we got more of that narrow view of older broadcasts. Had no clue what the "line drive" looked like or really what the hell just happened, just somehow MJ was on the ground and a guy was on second. It's super situational but I do think it does enhance viewing. But again that's not really the point of your video. As usual fantastic video!
