This is an interesting comment to me. Mostly because it's not how I play (the clarinet). Once I've practiced a piece multiple times, I play via muscle memory rather than picturing the sheet music. By muscle memory I mean the positioning and movement of my fingers on the instrument. I suspect you're correct about this musician picturing/ reading it in his head through. Why would someone be so surprised that he brought a tin whistle since clearly (1) he has one, (2) he knows how to play it, and (3) he could reasonably predict that this song would be played? Seems like the expected level of preparation for a band member. No need to be impressed. In fact, if a bandmate in this situation neglected to bring a tin whistle, I'd be pretty disappointed.
