In this video, Prof. John Ahr welcome guest instructor Jennifer Monroe to the Online Jewelry Academy. Prof. Monroe will show viewers how to set a cabochon cut stone in a single gallery prong setting. This type of setting is both lightweight and economical. So, it's a good option for many jewelry designers.
The single gallery setting can be used to mount a wide variety of materials including cabochons, sheet material, and flat back stones with faceted tops. If you've tried to set stones into four prong settings and failed, Prof. Monroe will show you how to simplify the process and ensure your success.

Hi Dharlee, Eventually we will create more stone setting videos that will include setting faceted stones. Currently, we don't have that work on our agenda right now. We are working to prepare new project videos. We will definitely let everyone know on FaceBook, Instagram and Twitter when we have a prong setting video. Thanks for your continued support! : )

hi! is it the same principle when you make a ring, where you would solder the setting to the shank before setting the stone?

also, how do you recommend shaping the base wire if you wanted to set a geometric shaped sone, like a hexagon, or pear shape?
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Lauren, A simple rule to follow is that stones are set into a piece after all of the casting, fabrication, sanding, polishing, finishing, etc. is completed. Otherwise, you run the risk of exposing the stone to harm. Thanks for your support! : )
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Lauren, You would shape the base with tools such as pliers, stakes, and hammers. The position of the prongs and the shape of the prongs may need to be adjusted if you create a setting for a fancy shaped stone. You might want to investigate books on advanced stone setting practices before your proceed. Thanks for your support! : )

Hi Debbie, Without seeing the actual cabochon stones it's impossible for me to recommend a setting technique. I suggest trying it out and seeing if it works and if you like the result. Thanks for your support! : )

Thank you for this video, it is very helpful. I was wondering if you can help me with a problem I have with a large blue variscite cabochon I set into a handmade silver bezel. This was my first time making a bezel and setting a stone this size. While smoothing out the edges of the metal, I held the file at the wrong angle and drew the file across the cab, leaving a sizeable scratch mark on it. The finished piece looks nice . . . until viewed from an angle and then you can see the scrape marks. Is there any way I can polish away the scrape marks (while the stone is still in the setting)? Thanks!

Hi Dee, Sorry to hear about your stone setting mistake. The good news is that the problem can probably be fixed. But, fixing it requires specific tools and supplies. Your best bet would be to find a lapidary in your area. The lapidary would be able to tell you if the stone can be repaired and quote you a price. Good luck! Thanks for your support! : )

The type of wire for the prong setting whats the hardness? Like half hard?
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
The prongs will become fully annealed during the soldering process. Hence, you could cut them from half-hard or work hardened stock. To harden the prongs after soldering, tumble the piece for a few minutes. 😀
