I’m not a pilot, but I have a love of flying because my late uncle (Major, USAF) piloted a B-17 in the Pacific in WW II and became a civilian pilot after the war. When I was about 6 years old my first plane ride was him taking me up and doing engine off/restarts and other drills. I never had do much fun in my life. I remember thinking on my first commercial jet flight at about 8 years old how incredibly boring the flight was. I kept thinking, “when are they going to do something fun?”. To this day I miss the plane dropping with power off as my uncle waits to restart the engine. Much respect to you and everyone in our armed forces. And what an incredible platform the Zulu is. The 6 year old in me would LOVE to experience it from the cockpit.

A couple years ago I was lucky enough to walk around and take some photos of some USMC helis that had stopped for a refueling in Albuquerque. My favorite part of seeing the AH-1Z up close was the "HIGH POWER LASER ; DO NOT AIM AT PERSONNEL" warning stenciled on the targeting camera. I've always found it pretty comical looking back. Great video, I really enjoyed the watch!

Definitely a very good looking gunship and deadly too in the hands of USMC crews I imagine, no doubt a bout that! Kudos to the pilot, admitting that the Zulu and Echo Apache make a great team, with each having unique qualities. I wonder if USMC and Army ACAV aircrew do exchange tours in order to get to know each other's platforms and learn how to make best use of them when operating in a combined fashion. Would love to see them working closely together!

It's easy to compare the apache and the cobra but they both have a purpose and each is more suited to their own role, and the zulu is just a fantastic example of logistics simplicity, reliability, rapid response and range. Though I must admit I prefer the 64 simply on the merit of it having more tools to use on the modern digitized battlefield. Non line of sight engagements and being able to find one's targets with ease, and share those targets in a scalable way is a total force multiplier. I hope this isn't the end of the cobra lineage though, who knows maybe we may eventually see cobras and apaches on the battlefield in their intended roles one day, hopefully it's not needed.
@kpperry784
@kpperry784 6 ай бұрын
They shouldn’t be compared actually. The Cobra is more of a pure combat support gunship. The Apache was designed for the Cold War as a tank buster and APC buster, more specifically for the former Soviet threat used in a hunter killer team with the Kiowa.

The Marines should have bought the Apache. Congress granted the Marines funds to upgrade their old Cobra not buy new helicopters. Ironically it cost more to upgrade their Hueys and Cobras than to just make new helicopters.
@amazin7006
@amazin7006 6 ай бұрын
@@MrGimmethreesteps Apache just isn't made for carriers like the Cobra/Viper is, so it would also require an expensive upgrade package to be carrier capable. This means the Viper was actually the cheaper choice here. On top of that, they have proven their value over decades, whereas the Apache is a shot in the dark. Viper also has a significantly better range than the Apache, which is one of the most important feature for the marines (they can keep their carriers further out of range when running sorties) and its why we are now seeing new vehicles like the V280 which might even be used in an attack role. Another advantage the Viper has is that it shares parts with the UH1 Huey and Cobra which makes it much easier to maintain and keep operational. The acquisition guys in the military are geniuses, they wouldn't make such a dumb mistake if the choice was so obvious

@@amazin7006I could be wrong, but isn’t the AH-1z more for anti infantry support while the AH-64 is more for anti tank?
@amazin7006
@amazin7006 6 ай бұрын
@@agiantrat5517 Both are capable of both roles. 1z can carry JAGM, Hellfire, and Maverick missiles, which are all more than enough to destroy any tank on earth. It can also take out fixed wing aircraft with the sidewinder. The big difference is in doctrine and how the military chooses to use it. 1z tends to push in closer in a support role, while Apache is more of a hunter/killer The big advantage that the Apache has is that radar and longer range strike capability. It's like a sniper (although the viper can strike at long range too with that new sensor).

Not to take away from the Viper, it's definitely badass. But surely the Apache is deadlier of the two?
@SpiralOut86
@SpiralOut86 6 ай бұрын
Well the Apache doesn't have the defensive air-to-air capability the Viper does so in my opinion that would make the Viper "deadlier." I'm also former USMC though so definitely biased. Edit: I didn't consider the Apache's 30mm compared to Viper's 20mm...so, maybe it's a tie? Haha
@jebadiahkerman7846
@jebadiahkerman7846 6 ай бұрын
It's hard to go off just based on numbers as in theory and on paper the two are similar and the zulu looks a bit better because it's faster and has a longer range. The main difference these days is the hover performance, practical load carrying ability, and the big one is systems. Each tool is meant for a different job, with the apache acting more as a maneuver element intended to operate ahead of the front line, where it needs to find it's targets on it's own and where low speed maneuverability, load carrying ability, sensor capability and stealth are more important. It can use the radar to scan, set prifire and nofire zones, share that data with all the members of it's flight, and carry out a non line of sight engagement. The cobra however is operated as a support element by the USMC, with them being either held in a pattern or in a ready position so they can scramble and get in the air to respond to fire support requests. They operate more on the front line where they would be more easily spotted, and where speed and response times are more important than carrying a full load of 16 missiles or whatnot. It may not control its own drones or have a fire control radar, but it doesn't need them, it's not really finding it's own targets, but rather being used to hit known positions, to escort friendly ground or air elements and support troops on the front line. Technically the apache has more practical lethality as it has the load carrying ability to carry all 16 missiles without needing to take as little fuel, and it's sensors and data linking makes it more potent on the digital battlefield. However it's like comparing a scalpel to a sword. Sure, they both cut things, but one has a very different use from the other. In short... It depends on what you are doing, when you are doing it and where you are. If you are an infantryman on the front, you'd probably be hoping for cobras because they will get to you sooner and stay longer. If you are planning, you might prefer the apache as it would be roaming beyond the line to make sure as little things reach the front line in the first place. Reactive and proactive.

This is great video no filter really appreciate it. I’m an A&P apprentice at my flight school and I fly the twin Beech Duchess. This thing is faster and we are fast for fixed wing piston planes. Well it’s fast for a HELO but I’ll tell you this Cobra is really fast ! It may look slow but I’ll bet it around 200 KTS almost. This pilot is aces . What a humble dude. Love HELO pilots ! You guys rock hard ! It’s such a different style of flying. I would love to do that. Peace n love to you all BE SAFE MY BROTHER PILOTS. MIKE KLZU

This is amazing 🤩 Once saw a video on an exercise with a cobra vs fighter jet and the cobra won the majority of the times. I bet this hot wheel is even deadlier.

OMG!! This is easily the coolest vid I've seen in quite some time!! Makes me wonder - WHY isn't there a Top Gun movie with Cobras instead of F-18s? This is waaayyy more intense and cool!! Thanks so much, can't believe that there are people who do this every day as their day job!! Awesome!!
