It's cool that you're asking about Ted's ability to do the tactical side of the game - because he basically never does. He's a "man-manager", great at getting the best out of people. He counts on his assistants for the tactics. This isn't ignored - it's a plot point. And yes, that's Crystal Palace's stadium.
@mzkz7g4 ай бұрын
A subtle point many don't notice is Ted hanging the John Wooden Pyramid of success in the office. Wooden was a legendary and highly successful college basketball coach at UCLA. He has many coaches at all levels of all sports that follow his philosophy. If you look the pyramids first two base levels only reference team and individual character. And never addresses sport specific strategies.

As a lifelong footy fan, it took me a couple episodes to get into this show, but it quickly became one of my all-time favorites. It's less about football, more about mental health, love, and friendship. But... the backdrop of English football makes for a great setting, and I think you will really enjoy getting to know all of the characters, many of whom are at least loosely based on real life personalities from the world of football you know so well. If you do the series, I'll definitely watch every reaction. Oh, and your eyes were not playing tricks on you, they used CP's Selhurst Park as AFC Richmonds home stadium.

As an American who avidly follows and loves the Premier League, I know you’ll love this. Yes, the show does use many shots of Selhurst Park for Richmond’s stadium since they have a similar red/blue scheme. I’m sure part of that deal was to mention Crystal Palace as their first opponent 😂. And yes, American football is mostly Americans. The biggest pool they recruit from BY FAR is American high school and college. So foreign players do certainly exist but are very rare, and often have a background in rugby.

4:25 Ted's accent is a slightly exaggerated, but very typical South Central Plains Twang. It is very common from South Central Nebraska, through Kansas and Oklahoma, up to the northern Texas Panhandle. It is sometimes called a "cattleman's drawl" or a "plainsman's twang". The accent is softer and subtler in the north, and grows progressively stronger the further south you go. Like you, I am a die hard football fan (Celtic supporter for life). Be aware, this is not a show about football. It is a workplace comedy, in which the workplace simply happens to be a football club.

American football is mostly American - not that many foreigh players since the game is only played in the US. However, there have been a number of African players coming to the US and playing in college that eventually make it to the NFL. Recently, the Kansas City Chiefs brought in a Welsh rugby player who may make the roster but that is uncertain. In the story, Ted is from Kansas - a state in the middle of the US, and coached a college team called Wichita State (a college which actually doesn't have a football team in reality).
@JeffKelly035 ай бұрын
There are a solid number of players coming up the ranks through Germany. I'm assuming that's in part because there are a lot of US military brats over there so it's easier to cultivate an American football culture. Australia has sent several Australian Rules Football and rugby players over as well, mostly as punters.

In the States, in American football, our coaches are called coaches, not managers. In the NFL there is a manager, the general manager and he runs the front office and usually coordinates player acquisition and such. As far as levels of football in the United States, our highest level is the NFL and it is a closed league without the possibility of relegation or promotion. The NFL has 32 teams. The next level of football is college football. There are hundreds and hundreds of colleges that participate and it is an open league overseen by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The NCAA schools are divided into three divisions with Division I (D1) being the highest and D2 and D3 below it. But before you are old enough to play college football, there is high school football and there are thousands and thousands of school who field high school football teams with players between the ages of 14 and 18. Before high school there is either middle school football, a mixture of tackle like the big kids play or flag football. Finally, the youngest players can play tackle football in a league similar to Little League baseball called Pop Warner League in which players as young as 5 years old and as old as 16 can participate in age group delineated leagues. Americans love American tackle football and many Americans love college football more than the NFL. In fact there are 8 Universities that have college football stadiums that seat more than 100,000 fans and they sell those stadiums out every Saturday! Ted was a head coach of a fictitious, Division II college football team. Beard was his assistant coach.

Hello there! Welcome to Ted Lasso land, it’s a wonderful place. I’ll enjoy watching along as you discover this series, it’s honestly one of the best. Also an American football fan, I can let you know that you’re more or less correct with your assumption about foreign-born players in the “main” levels of the sport, those being D1 college football and the NFL. The one exception is a recent (last 10-15 years) explosion of Oceanic “Rugby” players that’ve come over as kickers/punters. I put rugby in quotes because I’m not sure of the nuance between it and other similar activities, but signing guys like this has become a trend for some college programs and the move has paid dividends for many of them. Usually you don’t see other country’s guys coming in as it’s nearly impossible, from a mathematical sense, to make it onto a roster even for domestic talent. Enjoy the show! Glad to have you enjoying such a great production. More American media should be like this.

About the tactics...this show isnt heavy on them, to be fair, but, it doesnt ignore them or make a mockery. That said, they do treat them with a bit of tongue in cheek at times. The general idea is that Ted is great with motivation and interpersonal connection, while Coach Beard is the tactician. And together they make a competent manager I like your style dude. If you keep watching, I'll keep watching.

Jason Sudeikes (Ted Lasso) bases his character off of like a traditional midwestern dude. Accent and all - though it’s only that heavy out in the country. He’s originally from Overland Park, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City. So he brings in a lot of the heartland culture to his character. Throughout the series you’ll see references back to KC’s pride and joy: BBQ. Lots of his stuff has references to some of the most popular bbq places around here like Arthur Bryants, Jack Stack, Oklahoma Joe’s, Q39, and so on. And he and Beard both wear KC gear all the time, a lot like the locals do. You’ll probably know KC best from Travis Kelce, one of our players with the Chiefs, who is dating Taylor Swift. Their characters are technically from Wichita, Kansas, which is about 3 hours (200-ish miles) from Kansas City. And Ted coached college football (which is also huge here in the US). Also, just to note since our city is unfairly named-Kansas City is situated on the state lines of Kansas and Missouri, which means that there’s a Kansas City, Missouri (KCMO) and a Kansas City, Kansas (KCK). Most of the important landmarks and well-known bbq restaurants in the city are actually located on the Missouri side. While the suburbs of Kansas City are awesome in Kansas and have a good chunk of our population. It’s confusing but an important distinction if you live in the area lol since the best parts of the city are in Missouri. This show is amazing! It’s definitely a good one to go into blind since it’s a lot different than what you would expect. It’s heartwarming and surprising. I don’t think I’ve laughed as much in a show more than this one. I also don’t think there’s really one bad episode. And most of our football teams are made up of people from all around the US. Baseball, though, we do get international players.
