1) Higgin’s wife in the show is his actual wife, which makes me love them even more. 2) The Ted Lasso practice rant is almost a word for word recreation of an Allen Iverson’s practice rant.

I’d like to add that the rant was also dismissive of practice. He was asked about missing practice by a reporter, goes off on, “Why are we talking about practice, not the game, practice?” Ted gave him the answer why, because it’s where the team is together to become better . That’s why we talk about it.

What I noticed about the Dutch angle in episode 4 is that while it makes the scene off kilter, it also means that even though Ted is standing and Jaime is sitting, they're eye level in the shot. Even when he's trying to teach him humility, Ted is not talking down to or belittling Jaime -- unlike a certain other figure in his life.

The thing that I love about the difference between Dani and Jamie is that the songs, Jamie interpretation of his song is the fans idolising him and he barely acknowledges it where as Dani's song must have come from the fans and he loves it so much that he sings it all the time.

It’s so great rewatching this show I see so much more now!! Like when Ted is yelling at Jamie you can see Jamie retreat into himself, almost like he’s disassociating. Maybe a learned coping mechanism when an angry man shouts at him… but _where_ could he have learned that? *wink It’s such a great performance by Jamie’s actor (Phil I think?) and the Dutch angle shows how both of them aren’t quite right in that scene.

Outside of the stuff with his dad, the other massive significant part of his personality is the fact that he’s a kid from a council estate and managed to make it to the top. I loved the acknowledgment and discussion of that from both of you. Also cockney isn’t necessarily lower class as it just tends to be an east London accent. Jamie has a strong manc (north England) accent and does not speak ‘well’.

love that sam actually considered for a second there that we might actually see ghosts on ted lasso of all shows lol. and yes, brett goldstein wrote episode 5. also, the use of the dutch angle puts jamie and ted on the same level visually, i just thought that was really cool. also also yes, that scene where all the players put something in the bin was 100% jason asking the actors to bring something they thought was meaningful to their characters. there is a fun video where brett and hannah are watching some scenes and commenting and that one was one of them, also i highly recommend that video (there are spoilers for up to episode 1 of season 2) and the imdb “interview” with brendan, nick and hannah is quite literally the funniest thing i’ve ever seen in my life (there are little clips from season 2 but it’s not spoilery) sorry for the long comment lol but i love these little bts fun facts and i’ve seen every one of their interviews so i just have a lot of (some might useless) info in my head. if you got this far, thank you and i appreciate you both 🥰

Posh English and RP are two different things. The English that the queen and other members of the aristocracy speak would be considered "posh", but RP is not in the same category. Only about 3 percent of the population in the UK speak pure RP and an even smaller minority speaks in a posh accent. Interestingly, most of the people you hear speaking pure RP as their natural accent are people who were born outside of England in former British colonies, like the actor Richard E. Grant (Swaziland/Eswatini) and the biologist Richard Dawkins (Kenya). This video breaks it down, if anyone's interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWHUhJuuoNqGbbM

The "orange-teal" coloring is also used heavily in stage lighting with the warm color used as the key light (primary), and the cool color as the fill (although the precise colors for the gels on stage tend to be closer to amber and lavender). It is also used in photography. The origins go back to the masterworks of art where painters used warm aber and orange to depict light on skin tones, and blues and purples were used for shadows. Second team = understudy.

A day early! :D Might not surprise you by this point, but although I love all the characters, Jamie's my fave so my comments will mainly focus on him, oops. I'm also SO SO SORRY for the novel below. I honestly did not intend to write that much. Applause if you manage to get through it lol. Ep 5: Fun fact! While Jamie's sleeve tattoo is makeup, the Chinese lettering on his bicep is the actor's real tattoo. The characters actually mean "sunset," though, which makes the in-universe tattoo kind of an inverse to how people usually ask for a nice-meaning tattoo but translate it wrong and end up with something like "arm." I read a post somewhere that headcanoned the tattoo artist was so charmed by Jamie asking for "arm" that they decided to make it say something nice instead, and I've since adopted that as my headcanon as well. Also gonna take a moment to appreciate the costume choice for Jamie in that kitchen scene. Award-worthy. And!! I absolutely LOVE the interaction between Jamie and Henry. There is a slight bit of ulterior motive on Jamie's part - as soon as he gets done talking about how he's the only one people come to see, Henry arrives and proves his point - but it's more of a side effect. He immediately drops the douchebag routine and is a total sweetheart, signing Henry's jersey and telling him the next goal will be for just the two of them. Henry's going to remember that moment forever, and it's such a humanizing interaction for Jamie as well. Which is necessary, because oh boy, he was at PEAK dickishness this episode. Ep 6: I could wax on and on about this episode but I'll keep it to keep it focused. The main thing I want to draw attention to that I don't recall being mentioned (if you did and my memory is awful, ignore this) is how Jamie reacted to Ted's practice speech. He starts out being a brat as usual, but once Ted's voice goes into that lower register to where he's genuinely angry - this is also the moment when that Dutch angle comes into play - you see Jamie get super fidgety, unable to look Ted in the eye, and completely shut down. The curse scene gives us only a glimpse into what Jamie's dad is like, but that reaction is a really haunting example of show-not-tell: When a male authority figure is yelling in Jamie's face, he gets anxious then goes silent and mentally checks out. It also brings new meaning to when Dani went to go high-five him. Jamie wasn't looking in Dani's direction so the movement startled him, and his first reaction was to put up his hands defensively. Oof. Stellar writing, stellar acting, and one of many examples that shows how rewarding it is to rewatch this show. The minute we get an insight into Jamie's psyche and backstory, his behavior in previous episodes suddenly makes a lot more sense and hits a lot harder. Last thing: Jacqui, all that trivia and those explanations was really great to have laid out like that! I'd noticed/read a lot of it, but I just love that you go so in-depth and have clearly delved into the meta aspects of the show. Makes for an even more delightful watch.

I absolutely read all the way through, because it blows me away that someone cares enough about our videos to write a novel! Thank you so much! Also, we just had an upload issue last week that delayed it to Tuesday, so from now on (excluding any other technical issues), Ted Lasso will be dropping on Mondays. Gotta start the week right! 😄 To address most of your points at once...we talked about almost every single one of them, but that made the first cut of this video close to two hours, and that just wasn't reasonable for KZbin. We're planning on putting the full reaction up on Patreon when we launch it, so that way not everything gets left on the cutting room floor. We talked about how Jamie was purposely baiting Ted with Henry, and how by the end of Ted's speech about practice, he had lost all of his swagger. I love that you pointed out the psychology of that--Jamie's issue with male authority figures stemming from his dad, and when he put his hands up defensively with Dani. It's such great writing, and such a credit to Phil Dunster for his performance. It's genuinely criminal that he hasn't gotten more attention for it. On a personal level, I'm glad you love the trivia and explanations, because that's something I really enjoy, but not everyone does. I was a little concerned it would bore people, so it's so heartening to know there are others who enjoy the details! Thank you so much for all of your love and support, and we'll see you on the next one! ❤️ Jacqui

Like how you pointed out that the writers trust the audience. I write for a soap, and, once, I was writing a scene with a couple who were having an affair. He enters the scene, hugs her, and he says, "Guinevere waits for Lancelot." And, she replies: "Don't say that. They were traitors." And I got a note from our editor that she was taking it out because our audience "wouldn't understand it". Made my blood boil.

Working my way through your reactions and loving them - keep up the good work :) I just wanted to comment on the section about Jamie and 'making it from a council estate to the Premier League'. I think you nailed the context for this, and Britain (and particularly England) definitely still struggles under the class system, but I think that with football it's something of a red herring. Football has long been considered a sport for the working class, with the more 'gentlemanly' sports of Rugby and Cricket reserved for the middle and upper class. (this is a broad generalisation, but such is life). Many of the greats in football have come from disadvantaged and meagre backgrounds to excel in the beautiful game. To pick a few of the first examples that come to mind - Pele couldn't afford a football to practice with, so used a sock stuffed with newspaper; Maradonna grew up in a shanty town on the outskirts of Buenos Aires; David Beckham actually grew up on a council estate, the son of a hairdresser, and a kitchen fitter; and Lionel Messi was the son of factory workers. Football, for all its many faults, is fundamentally a meritocracy - if you have talent, regardless of your background, you will go far. That is to say - that Jamie is right, in that he has been sucessful despite a rough start in life, but with usual Jamie attitude he has also missed the mark, and assumed that he is somehow special and unique, which he is definitely not.
@theshamelist
@theshamelist 2 жыл бұрын
It makes sense if you think about it, since football requires less equipment than almost any other sport. All you need to get started is the ball (or a sock stuffed with newspaper). To your point, Roy also came from a humble background, so it makes complete sense that Jamie used to idolize him, and I think it really fits the tone of Ted Lasso as a show, since Ted's entire goal is to help everyone improve, and be the best version of themselves they can be. And for sure, Jamie thinks more of himself than maybe he should, as while what he did is impressive, it's not unheard of. He has to learn that he is actually replaceable, and it makes his character development that much sweeter when you see just how much he grows and matures. Thank you for the lovely comment, and for the football education! I'm familiar with a lot of those names, but certainly didn't know much about them. Cheers! ❤️ Jacqui

And so many people in reaction videos I've watched/articles I've read were soooo shitty about Michelle throughout the seasons. But she's just a woman doing the best she can. And let's be real: Ted is a great coach, but could you imagine being married to the poster child for toxic positivity, the man who avoids serious/uncomfortable conversations like his life depends on it? That would be maddening! P.S. Jamie has a Mancunian (Manchester) accent; Roy Kent has a Cockney (London) accent.

I'm so sorry for your cursed filming! Especially since it was in such a funny episode, and I know that's the one thing that's impossible to fake--the surprise of humor. This was a lot of fun to watch, though! I loved all the insight into film making, it makes me want to learn more about it, although, to quote Community, "I hope this doesn't awaken something in me," because I have ADHD and hyperfixations are a bitch, and the last time someone said something casually interesting about the Minoan written language, I spent the next three weeks reading about the end of the Bronze Age and I'm pretty sure that's neither relevant to this conversation nor will it ever be useful to my daily life. Ahem. Back on track . . . I can't remember what I was going to say. Oh! I liked your observation of how there are a lot of pure characters, but they're still different; I like that depth to them. Dani Rojas! I'm pretty sure his type of purity is "puppy" purity, haha. He's just got a sort of happy innocence to him. Sam is similar but way more grounded.

I love how you're able to provide context because you've looked into it. As per Jamie (my son haha) a council estate is probably similar to a housing project I think? Also I have to ask, are Sam's rings David Rose inspired or is that just accidental? Anyway love the reaction :)

It's quite similar yes, and good eye! Whilst I have been wearing jewelry for many a moon before SC came on the air, I did see the full five fingers of rings that David rocked and knew it was a look I had to put into my rotation. Keep your eyes on those hands of mine, you never know what you'll see! - Love, Sam

Just found your channel and loving it. A word on the class structure in the UK and particularly England. I would say the vast majority of footballers come from working class backgrounds so Jamie is not exceptional in this sense but typical. And given that football has always been a very working class sport (compared to rugby or cricket for example - although that has changed also in recent decades due to the advent of professionalism in these sports) the crowds and the players very much have an affinity.

Almost all football players from across the globe come from poor families and impoverished backgrounds so everyone you watch a football match most of the players will be living their Cinderella stories

I appreciate the stuff between Ted and his wife (and also Rebecca and Rupert) because Sudeikis wrote this in part as a release during his own divorce. So, obviously, it was all SUPER personal. That’s why it all feels so human.

Council Estates are not trailer parks. And not everyone that lives in a council estate has no money. I lived in England for 12 years, and there are worse places than a council estate. They’re homes built by the local council, many after WWI. To provide low cost housing for veterans and others. You can BUY your council home. Many are actually very nice. Yes, some estates are bad .. just like some neighbourhoods are bad in the USA, but not all of them. It doesn’t mean you’re poor if you live in a council estate. Just means you’re not rich.

Also … players come from all classes. It’s not like Jamie (if he were real) was the only player to come from a council estate. Roy came from a block of flats .. which are even lower cost housing. It’s not something that is unheard of.

Theyre regional accents..and yes due to stigma and snobbery, these are considered as 'lower class' than people who use rp . Manchester is not rural btw..and cockney is east london, also not rural.

So I'm on my first date with this super cute dude from the valley - five minutes into getting coffee together, someone's overeager child spilled their beverage all over me. I mean from mid-chest to my ankles - everything I was wearing was ruined. So instead of seeing the movie as planned, we went shopping to get me new clothes. He picked out the shirt because I was 23 and had silver hair (dyed) and it was just a fun silly joke. Now I wear it because I'm actually getting gray hairs and I feel more like 80 than 30. - Long-windedly, Sam

I will say that she is being selfish by saying that she doesn’t want to be married anymore because she “doesn’t feel the same anymore”. Newsflash, marriage is forever and it shouldn’t be treated like a job that you can just go through the motions until something better comes along. So yes she is the villain here
