Watching back, it's amazing how different I perceived Nate's attitude in season 1 and early season 2. Instead of his bitterness and anger being excused as the poor guy who no one took seriously or believed in, I can now see that Nate was actually kind of mean the whole time, he just never had the power behind it to make it meaningful. Now that he has power, his attitude has remained pretty much the same but it now has a much greater impact.

2+1 comments. First, Nick Mohammed (Nate) has been bouncing around acting for a while, and his default role is the funny, nice, but meek Indian guy (essentially Season 1 Nate). Allowing him to play against type and be a jerk is pretty cool and a good opportunity for for the actor. Second, Nate's evil persona is based on a real coach, that's why he's getting the grey hairs. Jose Mourinho is most famous (in England) for leading a middle weight team called Chelsea and developing them (along with millions in Russian oligarch money) into one of the most successful teams in the 21st century. Like Nate, Mourinho started off in a meager position Nate was a kit manager and Mourinho was a translator. Both moved from the basic position into successful assistant managers. Mourinho eventually went on to become one of the most successful coaches in the professional game but with a reputation for being difficult to work with and focusing on success over style or image. His main style was to emphasize defense over all things, not caring if critics complained it was boring; Nate's first big image was his call to "park the bus" meaning going full defense by shielding the goal with bodies. Finally, when Mourinho moved to England to take over Chelsea he needed an image to capture people's attention. The Man Manager (disciplinarian/mentor) was already taken (Sir Alex Fergusson) and the Professor role was also taken (Arsene Wenger), so that left the villain role which Mourinho adopted. He played up the role of the arrogant but gifted genius, even selecting his own nickname, "The Special One", not dissimilar to Nate's Wonder Kid nickname. The main difference is that most of Mourinho's public image was an exaggeration, most people reported that in private he was a genuinely nice guy, Nate's seems to be who he really is. Finally, I was pleasantly surprised by Dr. Fieldstone when first watching this. When they first presented her I was afraid they were adopting the Magical Negro trope, for those unfamiliar per TV Tropes "In fact, the Magical Negro really seems to have no goal in life other than helping white people achieve their fullest potential;...If female, they will nearly always also be a Sassy Black Woman." When first introduced and she's portrayed as immediately solving everyone's problems I feared they were going there. But in these episodes we see that actually works very hard to create these breakthroughs and she has problems of her own, problems that vex her and make her less magical and more grounded/relatable without taking away from how good she is at her job.

The little things in this show are great. The way Jamie flinched when Roy approached him. The way Roy opened his fist and put a gentle open palm on Jamie's back. It was also such a good representation of child abuse, after Jamie hit his Dad, he wasn't happy, he completely dissociated. He totally shut down. It was a great example of PTSD in a survivor of child abuse.

Gonna say it one last time since we've come to the actual episode: No awards consideration for Phil Dunster for episode 8 is absolute highway robbery that I will never understand! Never mind the character growth from episode 1 until now, this episode alone is such a masterclass of microexpressions and line deliveries. His reaction to hearing Sam's dad say he's proud of and loves him, or when Higgins tells him about loving his dad for who he is and forgiving who he isn't. Jamie only has two lines in the locker room scene, yet you can tell how much work it is for him to say them and how they sound a whole lot like things he would have learned in therapy. The way he turns into a little kid again around his dad because of how much fear has been instilled in him. The way he flinches when Roy comes up to him because this sort of moment - pushing back against his dad - is when Jamie would be expecting to get hit (the look he has when James gets up? Oh man) and Roy is an imposing person who historically has gotten physical with Jamie. There's actually a really affecting gifset over on Tumblr that lines up all of the scenes in which Jamie flinches at sudden movements, which is a horrifyingly excellent bit of consistency, similar to how Jamie almost never drinks. This episode really hammers home why. Then the hug itself! Fantastic. I'd like to give a shoutout to Kieran O'Brien (Jamie's dad), too, for playing such a viscerally disgusting character. I've watched this episode many times, and his performance never fails to be so aggravating. ou should look up images of him from about 20 years ago - he looks _uncannily_ similar to Phil. Incredible casting.

Ted brought up his father's death very nonchalantly in Season 1 episode where he beats Rupert at darts. He doesn't mention it was from suicide though. Amazing to see all the dynamics between the coaches, team and their fathers. Jamie's father is a verbally abusive drunk. As the daughter of an alcoholic, Higgins quote about his father was spot on: "I try to love my dad for who he is and forgive him for who he isn't." That is the healthiest bit of advice and it reminded me of the serenity prayer. Loved your take on the age difference and power imbalance between Sam & Rebecca. The comparison to how gross & inappropriate Rupert was vs how cautious Rebecca is being was one I didnt get on first or second watch thru. Only occurred to me when you mentioned it. great analysis! Not sure what to make of all the wine bottles at Dr Sharon Fieldstone, but I just got the feeling she is a very lonely person. I hope she comes back for season 3. A lot of people forget how territorial and shrill Nate was even the first time we saw him, until he knew Ted was his new boss. It was his job to protect the pitch, but when he thought it was some rando, his tone was totally inappropriate. Then of course there was his attitude when he thought he'd been let go. Anger was appropriate, but he went straight past reasonable anger into misogyny.

As far as I understand - as long as a soccer field conforms to a certain range of measurements, it is regarded as standard. This was done I think in part due to the fact the soccer fields are often built in areas where space is hard to come by - so a slightly smaller field might be all certain communities can afford or support. It in part prevents the game from becoming a "posh" sport where only the better off areas with room to spare can afford a "standard" field thus limiting teams to richer areas.
@JamesChiles2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the overall regulations allow for a wide variety in pitch sizes because they are based on historic circumstances where available space varied widely from area to area. Some clubs also conciously choose to set their pitch size to suit their playing style. In general though, the higher you go up the scale, the more they conform to general standards, and most international-level pitches are pretty much the same size. Football organisations are hugley resistant to change, so any moves to standardize this always run into trouble. It's slightly stupid - but it also adds to the many facets of the game :)

Here’s something to think about, Sam’s birthday was in the first episode of the series. It’s unclear how much time has passed but it’s probably been about a year, so Sam is almost 22 or he just turned 21. Prediction for the future: Isaac is going to retire to become a hair stylist and Sam will take over as Captain. At the beginning of the season Ted said Sam had stepped up and taken over Roy’s position and that Sam was a leader on the team and he was literally reading “A Wrinkle in Time.” I rest my case.

Nate as a character is super facinating because at the beginning he is probably relatable to a lot of people. We've all had times where we've felt overlooked or unappreciated or genuinely been pushed around and mocked/bullied. And when we see him being built up and giving recognision and self confidence, it felt good. Because we want people to be helped and to grow. And if he was a little mean or aggressive it was more a symbol that he was no longer weak or powerless...until this season comes along and shows that, no, meanness and aggression aren't signs of power. They are inherent flaws that you often can't display UNTIL you are in a position of power. And that is when people realise that 'oh no' this isn't the person they want to see or relate to. And because he was relatable we not only feel disappointed but also betrayed.

Nate was bullied and never appreciated until Ted elevated him last season... but now Ted is dealing with his own problems. So Nate has lost his only supporter (in his eyes) and is floundering without someone to prop him up. The people he admired and wanted to be like were rude to those below them (before Ted), and that's what he learned. All of his (long built) self hatred is now spilling out in gross ways. I'm someone who has a real problem with Rebecca and Sam - not because of the age difference but ONLY because of the power imbalance. As the club owner she has an incredible capacity to affect his life and career. Seriously - she could sell his contract to a club on the other side of the world. As much as I love the concept of them together, it's not okay just because in this case the person with the power is a woman and someone we love.

I do like that they made a point, a few times, to illustrate that Nate is terrible with women but tries to respect them. Otherwise, he's a rejected date and one chat room away from being a full-blown incel. He certainly has the background for it. He is so deeply, deeply insecure. The extra layer to the "Wonder Kid" thing is not just that it's a mistake: it's that it made him look stupid. And the only thing he has going for him, the only thing that he's now getting praise for, is that he's a brilliant strategist. The joke about "Wonder Kid" hit him right where it hurts. And also, Ted has been doing f**k all this season to rein him in or ask where his nastiness is coming from, despite seeing it. Beard is the only one who has addressed it.

I still can't believe Keeley talked about Roy behind his back to his colleagues, boss, and her own ex-bf 🙃 and we're meant to find it funny. Roy was right to feel humiliated. You just don't do that. Communication is key with each other. Instead she just bottled things up until she exploded. Talking behind your partner's back is the worst. I understand wanting to talk with Rebecca because she and Keeley are friends... but she's still Roy's boss. Thinking back on it Roy and Keeley's relationship had a lot of uncomfortable things happening. Starting with the fact that she gets off to Roy being miserable (in s2 she literally w*nks to him crying during his retirement press conference, and in s1 when he was about to get benched, all she could think about was how hot it would be if he cried 🤢) and to him doing exactly what she tells him to do without question. And her advice to Jamie when Roy is upset? Just agree with him and ignore the issue, who cares about WHY he's upset, right? All that matters is that he stops being a prick to me! 🙈 big nope for me. Kind of fun fact: baseball has no standardization for the outfield. The infield, bases, pitching mound etc have to be an exact proportions, but once you get beyond that, you can have anything. The advice that his father said to him. “They say humility isn’t think less of yourself but thinking about yourself less,” that is the exact advice Nate needs to heed. Nate’s dad’s advice might normally be good. However, if you do something like Nate did - salvage a game on your call after the head coach bailed - you deserve a little back-patting, that’s an awesome achievement! Secondly, we see both from this episode and the one at the restaurant that Nate has never gotten any praise or affection from his dad no matter what he does. That’s not healthy, let alone kind like a parent is supposed to be. Much like Jamie, Ted, Sam, etc. (and people IRL), it’s plain to see that what the father is like affects the son. We feel stronger about Nate’s behavior than other characters’ because we rooted for him and he started from the bottom, but it’s something to keep in mind: we gave grace to the other rough-edged characters, particularly once we’ve seen/heard about their dads, so we should do the same for Nate.

Revisiting it, I go back and forth on how they portray Nate in comparison with the most direct correspondent: Jamie. They're very clearly on opposite journeys but sometimes I feel Nate doesn't get as much nuance in S2 as Jamie got in S1 and that might play a big part in how they're perceived by the public while they're being assholes. Just like there were more moving parts when it was Jamie (his father and family life in general, growing up poor, football being his one good shot at a good living, competition to keep his place, respect from his peers, etc.), the same should have been highlighted for Nate and judging by the generally wildly different reception I guess it wasn't.

In Football there is a min and max for fiel size. That was made cause not every team could afford to build big stadiums way back when it all started, its like baseball that not all are the same. They loose playing the FA cup witch is a tournament played at the same time as the league. Its important cause its played with all the teams of the top 3 divisions in single elimination games. It is very realistic that a second division team would loose by that score to Man city that is the best team in England and probably the best club team in the world. What makes this series great also is how they researched team culture in England. They play Blue moon while they are loosing cause that is Man city's anthem before each match. The seen where Tartt screams Richmond is a shout out the the movie "Hoosiers"

I wonder if the "What's up doc" line refers to the 1970's Barbara Streisand romcom called What's Up Doc (we all know how much they love romcom references in this show); the Jason Sudeikis character in We're The Millers makes a couple of Streisand comments during the movie. Speaking of We're The Millers, here's my favorite scene from that film - you have Agatha Harkness groping Rachel Green's boobs, and Ron Swanson fingering Ted Lasso - what more could you want? kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGaWhGWafrGJn7s

A little on the non-standardised pitches… In football in England there is a long history of allowing a certain amount of freedom to create a home advantage. So that’s why there is a range in which pitches have to fall into, but there does allow for difference. So essentially a team can make it so their home pitch suits their play style. The creating a home advantage also goes to dressing rooms, like if you remember when season 1 when they went away against Everton, the dressing room was a lot smaller and shittier than their home dressing room when they are playing in Richmond. That’s because the away teams dressing room in most stadiums is shittier, more uncomfortable, smaller; Basically all to throw a team off their game, make them feel unwelcome, etc etc. I think it’s these kind of details that make football fans appreciate it that little bit more!

Strong disagree on Rebecca and Sam's relationship being okay. The age difference doesn't bother me, but the power difference between a billionaire owner and a 21yo athlete who works for them is gross. At the very least, large chunk of his (maybe 15 year career) is entirely under her control.

I LOVE the Sam and Rebecca ship. I think they are great together, but I am still not 100% comfortable with the age difference and power dynamic. If the older boss was a man and the young employee was a woman, we would NOT look favourably on this. I'm very much conflicted in my feelings about this relationship.

I don’t know if this is feasible for y’all or not, but I would LOVE it if you could do a live stream once you’re finished with Ted Lasso so we can get your predictions for season 3! I have so many thoughts but don’t want to leave any spoilers!

Nate should have just embraced the "Wonder kid " moniker. That's the English translation of "Wunderkind" anyway, and if he wanted to justify it, he could simply say "Well, I'm English, not German". He can't tolerate being thought of as "wrong" in any way, though, clearly because he could never live up to his father's expectations.

I find it so odd that it tends to be the people who constantly talk about how nice and positive the show is and talk about how it teaches us to have compassion and empathy for others are the people who respond to Nate's obvious deep-rooted issues with the most vitriol and total lack of empathy.
@douglas29382 жыл бұрын
Yeah, though the show kinda fails at that too because they don't emphasize it like they did with most people in S1. If they had portrayed Rebecca or Jamie without highlighting the other issues that affect them, most people might have failed to empathize with them too.

Sorry for the late comment but hey I get to rewatch you both so yay. I was so uncomfortable with the 1st therapy session that I tried to fastward it the first time I watched sadly I was watching it with my dad and grandma so they made me sit though it. Also F Nate. Funny enough I was team Keeley/Roy from the jump but I was thrown for Rebecca/Sam at 1st but I'm just as protective of both. Lastly that Roy and Jamie hug made me stream tears. 💗💙💜 Random but have either of you watched One Tree Hill?

When she says “oh my god I’m a pedophile!” I was struck by thinking, isn’t this around the same age difference between her and her ex husband when they likely met?
@theroomstops Жыл бұрын
(Sorry to butt in) She would have been around 32-33 when they got married, since she was about 45-46 when we met her (going by Hannah and Jason saying they're playing around their same ages), and they had been married for 12 years. We don't know how long they were together before they married, though we know now after 3.02 how they met. Going by actor age, Rupert is about 67/68 (almost 70 as Rebecca says) in season 1, which makes their age difference around/a bit less (at 20ish years) than Sam and Rebecca, whose age difference is around 25 years.

With regards to the loss, I think it was less something narrative and more something logical and expected and therefore a good vehicle for the character plots. The FA cup is different from the leagues. It's a knock out competition, so sometimes you end up with lower league teams somehow making it through to the end stages of the competion. And they are always exciting for football fans, because that 3rd division local team who normally plays to crowds of a few hundreds are suddenly playing a premier league team in one of the biggest stadiums in the country. And everyone always wants to see the underdog win. So seeing Champion League team Richmond play against Premier League team Man City (implied to be the best team in the best league in England in universe) is less of a talent gap than some of the FA Cup match ups we have seen in recent years, but it's also not unusual to see it turn into a whitewash. And because it's a different competition to the Leagues, it doesn't interfere with their journey towards promotion and back to the Premier League. I'm not a footbal fan myself, just British, but I think this is a cultural aspect of the game in this episode that is easily missed if you are less aware of football.

Love the reaction peeps BUT 23:00 people do have Siri in their homes. Wouldn't it be more annoying if he said "Hey, Denise, play my playlist"? It's like when films make their own version of Facebook or Google. It takes you right out if it.

I enjoy seeing the reactions Sam has been having when watching ted lasso but one big drawback i am finding now is that this enjoyment is undercut by the attempts by both Jacqui and Sam trying to be didactic in their responses (ie this is the lesson the viewer should be learning from this scene etc... ) and which in the end comes across as just pontificating, which is totally unnecessary. You should try and give your audience more credit when it comes to their ability to understand the show I think.

I also thought Nate was spitting at himself in the mirror as a sign of disgust at himself. But in an interview I think Brett or Nick mention that it's a way of psyching himself up. He always does it before those moment he perceives he needs to be powerful, like getting the table at the restaurant.

I guess I shouldn’t tell Sam that there’s an actual Roy is sorry for not understanding Keely playlist on Apple Music. One thing that I was truly genuinely concerned about in this video was the safety of the Golden Girls mug that Jacqui was holding. I’m not sure she should be holding anything at the S2 finale.

Jamie isn't in his early 20's. He's more like in his late 20's early 30's. As Keely said in season 1, "when I was 19, I dated a 23-year-old footballer, now, I'm nearly 30, and I'm still dating a 23-year-old footballer."
