I had my BKA on February 4th this year and because of the “rona” I was not in the hospital at all. I had surgery start at 7am and was discharged by 1pm. So I literally had to do everything on my own from the very first day. Between the doctor the physical therapist and the prosthetist have all said that they figure that’s why I am doing so well with everything. But honestly, I was so scared of everything because I was afraid I would fall, or one of my dogs would accidentally jump on me, or my grandson would accidentally hurt me that I was as afraid to be home or go anywhere. I did not like having to learn how to do simple things like getting into my bathroom alone, or how to get into my tub. Or getting in and out of my bed or wheelchair alone. I’m not anymore but for the first two weeks we really hard for me.

This is definetly an odd question. Since your lower calf has no mobility since you don't have a meat foot remaining, are you at a higher risk for blood clots in your residual limb? Thank you for everything that you do, I LOVE your videos. I’m also an amputee and I’m going to try a socket at my limb centre next time I go. It’s basically made on my leg so I go, get measured, have my socket made and go! Also in summer I’m going to get a new knee which is COMPUTERISED!!!! Love from the north of England 🤍

That's what was done with me up here in Edinburgh :) they called it a flexiliner, it's sooo tight and they said it'll shape itself a little bit and warm up while using and wearing. That didn't really work with my leg, they had to use a hear gun to make it a bit wider. Fight to get the C Leg 4, everything else like the VGK or Rheo are rubbish imo. I have the Genium but that was covered by my German insurance 9 yrs ago, moved to Scotland 5 years ago and C-Leg 4 is the best which I can get here.

Hey there!!!! I am so glad I found your channel! I became a below the knee amputee 7 months ago and just got a prosthetic leg one month ago. I was LITERALLY today playing around with one of my synthetic spot things to get relief from a sore spot and was putting it on completely wrong. I put it on outside the sleeve. After seeing you put it directly on the skin I paused the video and tried it the other way and bam! So much relief! What a wealth of info that I’ve been searching for. 4:30 I have been an amputee for a bit longer than you, and I have had a great many prosthetists. I can say that how well your leg is fit makes a *HUGE* difference here. A leg that doesn't fit well will be intolerable, where a leg that is well fit can be worn all day long without much discomfort. There is defiantly a spectrum, and the prosthetist I have now is the best I've ever had. I won't settle for "good enough" any more.

Ok the first time I saw someone who was a amputee I was like 3 or 4 and I ran up to them super excited and just asked them "Are you a robot?" and looking back I get so embarrassed but I love how she responded and that's why I still remember it she took of her leg and just said "Ya I'm a robot I got my limb attachments." She then put her leg back on. It was just the coolest thing to my little brain. But super embarrassed when I remember it.

Excellent job, Jo. I too use suction to hold my prosthetics on. My first permanent legs (two) cost a little less than $100K combined, but they were computer controlled. I now use simpler ankle/foot combos as I found the computer legs had to be charged every night and were just a real pain in the butt to maintain. These are easier to maintain. In summer (I live in the Kansas City area) I generally wear shorts which leads to a lot of questions, especially from kids. I love talking to the kids because they generally aren’t afraid to ask questions. You and I have a mutual acquaintance (Anika) whom I met a few years ago at a Hanger Prosthetics meeting in Kansas City. She’s a very cool person. I like her a lot. I also have issues with with my suspension sleeves especially in the summer causing blisters where they fit closely at the top. Cutting a “wave form” around the top has just about cured my issues as it loosens the top just a bit. Anyway, again, great job!

My prosthetist is a BK himself so that definitely helps. I like to hike and i have been using the Fillauer All Pro foot and now going to try the Kinterra foot. I wasn’t to crazy on the Ottobock Taleo but I have heard lots of good things about that foot. I have been using the pin style socket as its cooler and faster to take on and off my new leg im having built to be able to do pin or vacuum depending on what i am doing that day.

I live in Ignacio Colorado. I have Medicaid and have been dragged through the mud for proper prosthetics. It’s been really sad to lose my Colorado girl life over the years. I watched both happy and sad, I miss biking and hiking. The girl of the days of old. I’m sure they don’t think of that when they are doling out crappy legs. If they would have given me what I needed I could have lifted myself out of poverty and never needed a thing from them again but they don’t see the human side of it. i have a prosthetic leg with a mixed system: vacuum and pin connection. As far as I know it is the latest model for transtibial prosthetics. In my country, Portugal, these prosthethics are provided by the health care system free of charge to the patient

This is gonna sound weird, but after my grandmother had her lower leg amputated and died shortly thereafter (unrelated to the amputation, but the amputation and her death were both related to smoking her entire life) when I was quite young, I was always very weird (not discriminatory, just strangely frightened of) the idea of amputation. Finding your channel has been amazing as it's finally kicked that bizarre mental hiccup of mine, and also because you're just so entertaining and interesting as a person. When finally the virus is gone you are very welcome to Europe again, at least here in Scandinavia I haven´t heard of restrictions around rollercoasters for prostetics, if you came with crutches you´d have to give them to the staff during the ride but prostetics are ok, I guess it´s the same in all of EU.

Hi Jo! Do you use the same sleeve for Scissors, Sunshine, and Bologna or do you have a specific sleeve for each leg? Also, do you wear sandals? I recall tennis shoes in the videos, and I remember you chose to get the split toe foot so that you could wear sandals.

Ya I get it. I didnt have to get hardware thankfully but had to fight insurance for almost a year while being 20 on a cane/crutches. And I'm expecting to need to get the same on my other side before I turn 30. People would judge me for using the scooter carts at the grocery store. My cane could fold up and fit in my purse. Being so young and unable to walk normally absolutely sucks. Anyone older than u judges u.

Question for Jo. I assume an impact like stubing your foot for example sends a "shock" up your leg and into your remaining limb?

I too use a prosthetic foot. It has similar dimensions to the lost limb and it's simply where I expect a foot and ankle to be. The perception is similar to the way you can so easily touch parts of your body that you can't see, like your ear lobes, without a mirror. If something like a table leg blocks the motion of my foot my calf can feel that the prosthetic foot's movement is obstructed even if I'm looking in a different direction or my view is blocked by something like a tabletop. I never tried skiing but I suspect it' feels a lot like wearing a snow skiing boot.

I wear a (Ottobock) C-brace it's not a prosthetic but has all the same workings just hooked to a brace. It's holding me over while the VA juggles the amputation idea. Like you stated the cost of these devices are insane. That was the biggest shock for me. A medical device that lasts a few years costs more than some houses.

I have had trouble with skin problems because I have scleroderma as well. Lately I've beenso swollen it literally was impossible to put my leg on. Sometimes it takes 3 hours. This is a question that I found the answer out to in one of your previous videos, but something I wondered about for years previously. So It might be something you'd want to put in a future video like this. I always wondered why people with prosthetic legs always seemed to wear shorts. I used to think "are they showing off their prosthetic legs? Do they want to draw attention to it?" I have since learned from you that sometimes you have to do a lot of fiddling with it during the course of the day and it's just easier if you're wearing shorts. So this might be a question you might want to add to a future video.

I wish I was not aware of my missing leg... well some times I'm not aware when I wake up and it feels like it is still there, still feel my toes and it was amputated in 2018, my left leg. Surgery next month on my left arm next, then another surgery after that... never ends. Even had a call my mother today asking me if I think I can survive on my own... LOL! Now that is when I think about all the idea's people assume and actually even after the surgeries I can survive on my own I believe... the statements from others get on my nerves on that but what ever... thanks Jo for all the tips... I'm hurting today and been doing a lot... before I loose the use of my left arm for seven weeks. Never ends... doctor say my calendar the other day and she was surprised and told me it looks like my job is seeing doctors... well see my transplant team Wednesday and my foot doc Tuesday and never ends... guess it is my job.... staying alive. Any way I have various liners for various reasons, and getting ready to pull off mine... my leg hurts as well, well what is left of what was my leg... wish you Jo and all your friends a good evening and thank you for your posts.

My friend was born without legs past the knee and arms past the elbow and the last time we went to Canada's Wonderland her leg flung off and scared the shit out of a pedestrian. so... Yeah I understand the rules around coasters lol
