Prior to his rookie season, there was no 3. Relative to his era, he shot a bunch starting in his 5th season. He led the league in 3’s made once and I think in 3’s taken twice. Those numbers are low compared to today, but in HIS era, he shot a lot of 3’s. Context, people. Context.

@@latrelljack8751 In absolute terms, I can’t argue your statement. In relative terms, you’re wrong. Stats without perspective are misleading. Off the top of my head, Bird led the league in 3’s made twice and 3’s attempted once. 98 made 3’s once led the ENTIRE league. Steph may hit 98 in a month. Different league, different emphasis on 3’s. Steph likely wouldn’t have been taking 10-3’s a game in 1980. Bird certainly would shoot more than 2 a game in 2023. Both are all time great shooters, and the best shooters of their eras.

Love your videos. This is the first video where I might disagree with something you say, and I say "might", because I'm not totally sure that I do. It has to do with the Bird 3 point take. I agree with you that if you took an adult/prime Larry bird and teleported him in today's league, he wouldn't be an all time great 3pt shooter, and nowhere near top 5 all time. That said, I don't think the teleportation scenario is fair to pre data-ball players. The more interesting and meaningful question to me would be "how good of a 3 point shooter would someone with Bird's natural talents be today if he was born in say 1995?". Larry Bird was born in 1956, he grew up and developed his brain in an era when the 3 point shot didn't even exist in the NBA, so he had no reason to train that shot at all. Even in his prime, when he was asked why he didn't shoot more threes, he responded with something of the effect of "the 3pt shot is a last resort, and it means you couldn't find any other shot closer to the basket. It's a last resort". He also admitted that he never really practiced the shot. Larry shot 1.7 shots per game on 38% from 3, which is not great, but he did that as someone who was taught (by coaches) that the 3 point shot was a terrible shot and not worth practicing. Larry Bird in today's game would have grown up practicing the shot from a young age and knowing it's the second most efficient shot in basketball(after the layup/dunk). Given his natural talent, FT%, and 3p% (on a shot he never practiced), I don't find it unreasonable to think he might be a top 5 three point shooter in today's game. That said, I don't think that's the argument this guy is making, and I agree this guy is an idiot.

This school started 5 Guards, and they did nothing but shoot 3s as fast as they possibly could. We played a way more "traditional" style. They lit us the fk up 😆.. we were down by 30 at halftime and my coach said "that's not how basketball should be played" but I'll never forget thinking "it's way better than what we're doing obviously lol.." but I never once thought about that ever being how the NBA would ever be.. 20 years later and it is lol..

If Curry's shooting ruined the game then there is plenty of other star players who contributed to the demise of the NBA. Lebron and player movement is 1. Kawhi and load management is the 2nd. Adam Silver and the emphasis on the offensive side of the game. Players' lack of accountability is yet another. Curry brought something different and exciting to the game. He humbled the game of basketball and made it more accessible to more people. How can you blame one man for a game he didn't even play in? Russo Douchio is a bigger idiot than Flip Fakeazz! Analytics is the reason for the barrage of 3 pointers and it isn't just Curry. Coaches teach that 3s are more than 2s and to heave them up as often as possible. I prefer this type of game cause it is faster with more transitions. No more set defenses and post up players who are 7 feet and over just dunking the ball. No more of that dribble dribble dribble iso ball either. The game is somewhat more fluid cause of the higher pace. I just wish they would change some of the rules they apply to contact like if the offensive player initiate the contact then there shouldn't be a call. Now all offensive players have to do is run into somebody and whistle! And how does Curry live at the line when GS as a team are probably last in the league at getting to the line and are 1st in making other teams go to the foul line!

Has anyone who's seen this video saw the Dominique Wilkins reaction to JJ Reddick's comments in this video calling him idiotic? The guy never even seen the video and there was a whole other narrative spun around to make him seem like he doesn't know what he's talking about.

You can't say that Bird wouldn't be an all time 3point shooter today... But yea, he isn't, looking at things right now

Really the main ability required to work on ESPN is to tank Bob Cousey's #1 fan JJ Reddick was himself a better 3pt shooter than Bird LOL ( 41.5% in 5.5 3PA vs 37.6% in 1,9 3PA )
