Back in 1988, my old boss imported a Transtar from USA into UK. I was gobsmacked, it didn't have brakes on the front axle, they were on option. Cost a fortune to bring it up to UK standards.

No ABS in those days meant that steer axle brake delete was safer in the Rockies. Here in Australia we always backed off the slack adjusters on trucks carting logs and cattle out of the mountains. Only flat country trucks used full front brakes before ABS and EBS came out. I live off a dirt road now and still 2 foot brake in a modern car to keep it out of the scenery.

Why the hell wont people stop putting detroits in these lager sized trucks? Detroits 318 and 6v are really cool but those should inly be used in small trucks
@slimchancetoo8 жыл бұрын
Well they ain't putting them in no more -- that is how the Transtar was built in the factory -- your choice of 318 natural aspirated DD or a Cummins. As for pulling capacity it could handle 45 tonnes gross on the flat -- hills knocked the stuffing out of them but you just wound it up downhill for the next climb. Head winds were also a bit of a bummer.

slimchancetoo its just better to put something even a 60 series 12.l DD. Even a 350 cummins could handle the job
