Welcome to Montpellier, a glorious example of utilitarian Greek revival style architecture. When people hear the term "Greek Revival" they tend to think of HUGE and ornate examples of the style, like they saw in Gone With the Wind.
The truth is that most homes that sat on working plantations were smaller, and much more simple in style. These homes were built for function, and their vernacular simplicity allows us to appreciate their beauty and craftsmanship.
This home was built on the sight of an earlier home, built in 1843. On July 4 of 1857 the first home on the sight burned. This home was started the following month, and was completed by the following February. It's incredible to think that a home of this quality, with these materials, was built by hand in such a short time.
This home retains five of the original acres, a pond, and a family cemetery tucked in the woods.

That was a very interesting door that led to the bathroom and I like the front door with it's antique features. I know of a house that has a broom closet in the kitchen that used to be the room where they would deliver a big block of ice. It's so cool (pun intended) that it's still there , but repurposed.

I do like the simplicity; a home for regular people, who may not want to run a B&B. The flooring in the kitchen area looks like a good match to the rest of the house. Of course, in 1858, the kitchen was most likely a separate outbuilding. I was surprised at the 'basement'. That upstairs space is huge; I kept thinking "What a wonderful place for Laine to keep all her extra furniture!" LOL. Looking forward to your 'move in' reveal on the Hope Farm cottage. Cheers!

In Tyler, Texas, demolition is currently taking place downtown. North Spring street is the facing block, our earliest 1877 Sanborn map shows wood structured buildings, between 1879 -1880's, those buildings are shown as brick on the Sanborn maps. ( Sanborn fire maps are very detailed, they were designed to be used by insurance companies ). I mention them, because all those old brick buildings are now a pile of rubble. Our local FB old bottles and pottery group leader requested and received a meeting with the judge in charge, but unfortunately he will not allow for any excavation to be done on the historic site. All those artifacts are walled off behind fencing and a wrecking crew is the only access. A new courthouse is going to be built on the site, so the emphasis is on clearing the site completely and not allowing for any preservation of anything whatsoever. Very sad news to me, the entire town square that it belongs to, was platted in the 1840's, and continually in use since the 1850's. It looked so strange and uncertain when I finally brought myself there to look. It certainly did not resemble progress. The person previously mentioned, overseeing the project, seems more excited to put his own stamp on the next 100 years. They are also removing several other old original brick buildings in the block behind it. One building, built in 1900, was in complete original condition, including windows and tile. It was such a solid building, it had these star shaped iron beams embedded across the roofline, and these huge iron floor base at all the doors. Before they closed the block off, we had plenty of warning that it was set for demolition. I would look at old photographs of the site, then sit in the midst of the remaining walls, they were huge, and I would just mourn for the impending loss of so much Americana. Online, I can read the local newspaper from as early as 1860, and see all the advertisement for the various thriving businesses in that town square. North Spring street was also the site where Tyler's first "Moving Pictures" establishment was open at the turn of the century. No doubt, it was probably where folks first sat and watched "The Great Train Robbery". There was even an old fashioned Penny Arcade right next door. All a memory now.

This is a primed example of why, these homes last so long. In the 1700's-1800's they built homes to last for generations. I would never have a home built today, unless they could build it like one of those homes. They built homes that last 100's of years vs homes today that last maybe 20years.

the mall has suffered like all malls across the nation. Natchez is my hometown. It’s laid-back, has over the years added many many events throughout the year to make it a fun place to live. It’s a certified retirement city. I’m trying to sell my current home here in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and move back home where I will buy a home in the historic garden district. Crime is low, although it has increased over the years like every other place. It’s a great place to live!!
