About an hour south of Las Vegas is the tiny town of Cal-Nev-Ari, Nevada. Population: 375. It looks like many other desert communities that dot the Mojave Desert, but this one is different: It has a "For Sale" sign on it -- the whole thing. Mark Albert asked the town's owner why she's selling.

There are a lot of stories like this if you get out and seek them. In the 70's I was on the way home from the Army in El Paso to Chicago. We were in the middle of nowhere in Kansas and stopped in for gas at a place that had a diner. It was early AM and there was no one in there except a lady in her 60's. She was preparing the diner for breakfast and also ran the gas station by herself. After settling the gas situation, I asked her who changes tires, etc. She said she does everything except transmissions. I believed her. As we talked, I grew more in awe of this lady. Her name was Mrs. Miller and she had run the gas station by herself for over 15 years. She was also the mayor of the little town, sorry I don't remember the name. She was a licensed electrician, the first female in the counties history and she was going for the certification in Plumbing. After we ate she said she had to leave to deliver the mail. I am not making this up. She was also an artist who bought old metal milk cans and painted them with American Indian scenes. She seemed perfectly comfortable leaving Dennis and me alone there to finish our meal. She never did mention a bill and when we asked her how much, she said you guys just got out of the Army and the food was on her. We left at the same time and we noticed she didn't lock anything up. She said she goes 6 days a week, 12 hours a day. After she left, we went back in and left her $20 under a plate. I am 70 now and have been all over the US. Met lots of memorable people, she is at the top.

But my family in Mexico got it in the mid 1950's because they were offering them chunks of 250-500 acres first come first serve in a desolate area and my grandpa happened to live in that area and got priority because he served the Mexican army at the time.

Lol, what a stupid comment.. They are mainly old retired people that are living off of social security, maybe at best getting 600-900 a month. There's no way they all have $20k. And even if they were to purchase it, they would always be conflicted on ownership and making decisions

Okay, I’m gonna ask, and I have nothing against with the way people choose to live, I just wanna know. Why does it seem like Nevada doesn’t ever want to modernize itself? I’ve lived in Nevada (Reno) for about 20 years now and still living, and I’ve seen small, yet dramatic growth and improvement throughout my years being here. And while I believe this small growth will do great for the future of my city and more so for the future of this state as a whole, there are others who downright hate the idea of Nevada becoming a more modernized state. They throw around rhetorics such as “Don’t California my Nevada”, giving the idea that ??modernizing a city or a state will somehow make that certain area less of the place it once was before it was improved?? Which I don’t get at all. A state won’t change into an entirely new state just because it was given a complete makeover. Nevada will always be Nevada, just a bit better! I want people to think that there’re other great places in Nevada besides Vegas. Las Vegas shouldn’t be the only place people think about when coming here. I want every corner of this state to have skylines, big cities, huge skyscrapers, gorgeous vacation spots, amusement parks, bigger shopping malls the whole nine yards! Why is it wrong to want this??
