Absolutely beautiful reading by this lady. My favorite parts are the last stand of El sordo (ch 27)...and the lovemaking scenes between Roberto and Maria. Chapter 10 (Pillars story) is one of the most profound and disturbing pieces of literature I have ever heard or read. Some how it manages to capture the tragedy of that terrible war....and being read aloud by a gentle female voice somehow makes it absolutely unforgettable. Defy you not to cry at the ending.

For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Ernest Hemingway, published in 1940. It tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American volunteer attached to a Republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia.

@@APoetryChannel I appreciate your work. By any chance, do you know why Hemingway chose to use literal Spanish translations for dialogue between certain characters? I'm a native Spanish speaker and find this very curious. I also think it's interesting how he censored certain parts himself by typing "unprintable" and "obscenity". Was it all part of his genius?
@APoetryChannel2 жыл бұрын
@@napalmsf Why he used the translations the way he did I can't say, though perhaps he wanted to help non-Spanish speakers understand. He probably censored himself because Gertrude Stein warned him not to use what she called "inaccroachable" words, lest his books face the fate of Joyce's and others whose books were outright banned and took long litigation to correct, but still carried a stigma.
