@@generoberts9151 Nope. Harpischord. The gimmick is that a harpsichord has no innate audible sustain like a piano, and they wanted to make the harpsichord sustain. With some clever miking by the studio engineer, they were able to get the sustain.

I'm pretty sure that the 1960s UK Band Nirvana ("Tiny Goddess", "Pentecost Hotel") did some album tracks which featured that combination. In those days - as in "For Your Love" - they got the harpsichord sound by double speeding a piano.

It's tough to rate a 1965 song in 2022. In 65 this was a new different song that planted the seed of the music that followed. We should always remember that in 2022 we can look back in listen to 100 years of recordings. In 1965 we didn't have the luxury of 100 years of recorded sound. It amazes me to think about what great sounds that we will never know about simply because of the technology ewasnt there to capture it. We are fortunate to have, listen to and judge the wealth of recorded music available to us.

@@gregsager2062 JB is and has been my favorite guitarist forever although admittedly not all of his work is accessible to me. I was an EC fan and saw him and JB many times but never cared for Page. I love that JB is/was innovative, still challenges himself, and never kowtowed to trendiness or styles. Lastly, he has always been generous with helping others in the studio. Perhaps least well known, he was in the studio with Stevie Wonder and was playing drums when they hit upon the riff for Superstition.

Written by Graham Gouldman who later was part of 10cc. I think the comments are rather out of context, but at the same time, this is the type of pop song that caused Clapton to quit the group and join John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Either way, one of the most important groups of all time.

Happy Friday, guys! Recorded at almost the exact midpoint of the decade (1/2/1965), this is a quintessential 60s rock song to me. It's also another song and another band with Clapton on guitar. However, he didn't like the commercial direction of the song and decided to leave the band as a result. Fortunately, this paved the way for him to join John Mayall's band, though for only one album, the legendary "John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton," which propelled him to guitar God status in Britain. This led to the famous London wall graffiti "Clapton is God." Would strongly recommend you check out "All Your Love" from this album. S-tier all the way.
@gregsager2062
@gregsager2062 Жыл бұрын
Even more fortunately, this paved the way for Jeff Beck to replace him as the lead guitarist of the Yardbirds. Clapton was a 100% blues purist at the time that the Yardbirds recorded and released "For Your Love" over his protests. I think that playing with Mayall got the blues purism out of his system, since he was more than willing to work his blues influences into pop music structures when he co-founded Cream.

That is not an organ in the song; it is a harpsichord. Also the members of The Yardbirds did not write the song. It was written by a guy named Graham Gouldman who also wrote their next hit - Heart Full of Soul - as well as another song that was on your poll, Bus Stop by The Hollies. Gouldman was later in a 70s band called 10cc which had some major success, primarily in the UK. In fact if you did a "70s Britpop" poll, a likely winner would be I'm Not in Love, 10cc's biggest hit.

Interesting that Beck's on the 45 sleeve. I was about to look up the timeline of Eric's departure vs the release of this single. This was written by Graham Gouldman, who had his own band The Mockingbirds. He also wrote Heart Full Of Soul for the Yardbirds, and other songs for the Hollies (Bus Stop, Look Through Any Window) and Herman's Hermits (No Milk Today), He'd later form 10cc (I'm Not In Love, The Things We Do For Love) in the '70s, and Wax (Right Between The Eyes, Bridge To Your Heart) in the '80s. Seriously one of the best songwriters of the Rock era.

Both bands were hugely popular in the mid 60s.

I am stuck trying to figure out which song of theirs is the best...this song...or "Heart Full of Soul".......both CLASSICS in every sense of the word. When you consider the #1 song for singles in 1965 on Billboard Year End Hot 100...was Wooly Bully by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs (this song came in at #48).....THEN it becomes obvious to you that this song was an +A+

Hey, the clunky was ok by me. I was in High School when this came out and it was obviously really popular. A unique sound of wild kind of instrumental frenzy in the background, great lyrics and singer. Wonderful inventive musical times to live through.

Fleetwood Mac did a cover of this on their 1973 album "Mystery to Me." You two need to check out some Peter Green and Bob Welch-era Fleetwood Mac. It ain't all just Stevie Nicks and Buckingham. They made nine studio albums before Buckingham/Nicks joined.

@@michaelkeefe8494 I must admit as much a liked Peter Green, I did like the Nicks/Buckingham era FM, that blues revival sound was becoming old hat, and we would never have had songs like The Chain, Songbird, Rhiannon, Tusk, Everywhere, Big Love and Oh Daddy, without the transition

1965, two years before the Summer of Love, 4 years before the first Led Zeppelin album. You might like to look at where Jimmy Page came from, how many sessions he worked on before he finally agreed to join a band. Also, Keith Relf, one of the unsung heroes of early pop.

Great band, great song. Clapton, Beck, and Page played with them at some time or another. Graham Gouldman wrote the song at the age of 18 back when he was playing with the semi-professional Manchester band the Mockingbirds. It was released in 65, it was their 1st top ten hit in UK and US. Fleetwood Mac issued this song as a single in 73.

There's a British movie which has a scene in it that features the yard birds with both Paige and beck that is a must see it was done in one take with beck playing lead that was way ahead of its time ,then smashing the set to pieces while Paige just keeps on jamming away

If I remember the story correctly, they wanted the Who in the movie, as they were known for smashing their instruments. But when they declined, they got the Yardbirds instead.

Once Beck left, Page took over, and you can hear the Led Zep sound starting to emerge with "No Excess Baggage", "Think About It" (which features the note-for-note solo Page would later use in "Dazed and Confused") and "White Mountain" (same tune as on Led Zep 1). With Page as the main guitarist, they recorded one official album, Little Games (1967) which contains those songs plus many other guitar-bending psychedelic and proto-Zep turnes (some featuring John Paul Jones). Definitely worth a listen on Patreon. Even cooler (but rarer album) is Five Live Yardbirds (1968), a concert recording which includes the original version of "Dazed and Confused", titled simply "I'm Confused". As the original members began to peel off, Page added Jones, then Plant and Bonham, initially touring as The New Yardbirds before eventuallly changing their name.

Try "Heart full of Soul" just for the fun of it. Also they did a version of DAZED and Confused. Paige, Beck and Clapton we're all in the band (not at the same time)...but indeed, they were post graduate work for guitar gods.
