The problem with my states legalization is that the state created its own cartel, charging high prices, and a high tax. Making laws even more harsh and conflicting than they were, to discourage people from growing it. So, the black market thrives, and it's half price of dispensary prices. It's ridiculous.

You must be from Illinois. We have broke records with the amount of taxes they've collected. Yet the roads are still absoult trash, and the kids seem to be getting dumber by the minute. Worst part is. The states that have legal medical, don't get to conduct any substantial research on marijuana. "The whicha why" Because the feds still have it listed as a schedule one narcotic. "No medicinal Properties" Even though, they themselves awarded a patent for marinol in 1985 for people taking chemotherapy. In the end, we're simply feeding the greedy pigs.

That is not exactly true. If we look at what is presented in this video it appears that the influence of large corporations and investors on politicians is the big problem. This is what has led to a corrupt Supreme Court and rampant media disinformation. Big money created a system to favor themselves. The answer is to just grow yourself or attempt to buy from smaller growers. Additionally, it is important to lobby legislator to change the laws in order to allow smaller growers back in. Just shitting on "big bad government" is lazy and incorrect.

I live in Illinois and it's a joke, they made sure no one could afford to get into production but the super rich. You need 400k in liquid assets, you need a compound with the latest security system that gets inspected. The made sure you had to have millions to start up. Craft growers licenses are at least 25k if I remember right, thousands applied, 50 got approved. Because of this our industry is controlled by 2 or 3 big companies and the little man has no chance which also impacts our prices, we have old school $20-$35 a gram prices, an ounce is around 300 dollars unless you want some trash shake, there's a 20% tax on top of that if you're not medical. Meanwhile you can go next door to Michigan and get quality ounces for half the price in certain dispensaries. Most of the people I know go to street dealers because our regulations, tax and overall prices on marijuana are rediculos. We are by far the most expensive state for marijuana. Also, not that this is on that same note, but why is all of our dispensary weed so dry and harsh? From what I've been told thc content is measured by what percentage of the flowers weight is made up of thc after curing. If that is the case, are people then over drying their weed to fluff their thc numbers for sale purposes? The weed is so dry you don't need a grinder, you can crush it to a full on powder with your fingers, what happened the bud having a slight amount of density, smooth tastes and such. I went to Colorado a few weeks back and the bud I got there was so much smoother. I've never seen weed that dry prior to dispensaries becoming a thing, never seen someone's home grown be like that. Our system is trash. They rushed in a trash system to make a quick buck on taxes and now everyone is going back to street dealers. If they approved more licenses to grow with out flooding the market, It'd be a beautiful thing. I want sub 200 dollar ounces, that'd be amazing. I think they actually see an increase in that tax revenue if they could compete with the street dealers, but that's not happening anytime soon. You can get an 8th on the street for 30-40bucks give or take, ounces for around 240ish, an 8th is at least 60+ tax at a dispensary, its absurd.

As long as the gov wants to profit from taxation, the more the off-market gangster sales becomes a slightly cheaper but “murderously” competitive. Let people home grow. And like Deangelo said, mega farms mimic the same non-competitive pricing paralleled in other plant agriculture. If ever you get seeds from any plant, save them. Seedless grapes, seedless any is bad. Do people still do craft beer at home? Then do the same for cannabis. Commercial beer companies don’t seem to suffer too much. If you don’t want to drink… If you don’t want to smoke… Don’t. Don’t drive drunk or buzzed. Don’t go to work or be around kids whether buzzed or not. In fact, please don’t smoke heavily toxic commercial cigarettes around your babies, too.

Perfect example of the mean core nature of the free market. Rich people will have the wealth to support an industry that produces such a quantity at a low cost that can lower the selling price, while small farmers will fall in the seducing trap to become big, meanwhile struggling to pay the bills. And with no other choice, will go to the black market or die. The economic free market system is based on an alien to the planet predator mindset, that brings our society out of the harmony that allows on our planet to balance the life of all and everything. A very easy way out is to limit the amount of land a producer can have. It would be basically bring to a local scale the market and cut of the possibility to the big fish to eat the small fish. Anyway the problem looks unsolvable because the law makers are those that have more power when the solution would be to fragment that power and localise it... unless a new harmonizing force that we yet don't know, takes over, Which is a wild hope in our times, but the only one that can be found using rational thinking.

It was a learning curve, but it's mostly worked itself out now. I just found it ridiculous how 1 gram would be sold in the same glass jar that 10 grams would be sold in. At least they are now using bags. I do find it ridiculous that all packaging looks the same and finding the name of your weed on your package is done by deciphering a code. You can't beat the prices though. There's no way that I would be able to find an ounce of weed for $100 twenty years ago. If you could get it at that price, it was never consistent. Now I can just go to the store and I know there will be good weed at a good price and I won't have to deal with a buddy of a buddy that might have sprayed it down with Dr. Pepper in order to increase it's weight for sale. We don't all have best friends who deal weed and are willing to give us a deal. There's also the recent problem of some weed being laced with fentanyl, etc. It might not be incredibly common, but it does happen. I have seen multiple people go down from overdoses from laced weed. Store weed is safe.

@motterbe

This video is actually quite narrow in scope. Different US states have regulated it in different ways both medically and recreationally, with different results. Some ways are better than others but there is always a downside. In this video they talk about "over taxing and over regulating" and in the same breath mention "over saturation of the market". Completely lax regulation leads to even more over saturation of the market with makes small growers poor (see Oregon). Stringent regulation and high taxes lead to higher profits for small growers, but limits the number of growers. (See Washington state) This video only talks about things in California, but it is a complicated situation because along with the black market there is the grey market (what some people call "legal" operations selling to the black market) as well as the black market (grow operations not licensed in any way). All in all it is extremely complicated (speaking as someone who was involved in the industry in Colorado for five years)

As one who has been involved in the black market and is currently in the legal cannabis market, I feel this video falls short of explaining what is really happening. The only reason there once was a thriving cannabis industry was because it was illegal and therefore cannabis prices have been over-inflated for almost the last century. Just because it became legal doesn't mean everyone who enters the market is entitled to have so called "generational wealth". We can't forget that cannabis is a plant/weed, it is very easy to grow and once legal, can be done on a massive scale, creating over supply and full saturation, leading to cheaper wholesale/retail prices and much slimmer margins. In states with less regulation and cheaper startup costs, we are seeing even lower prices and much higher saturation. What it all boils down to, is that Cannabis is no longer the "cash crop" that it once was, due to legalization. When lbs. of cannabis can be produced for under $300/lb, in the legal market or traditional market, one cannot expect to become rich quick with that business model. Even a small scale, independent farmer, with low overhead and startup costs, can produce quality flower at these prices, they always have been able to. The problem lies in the fact the end retail price of cannabsi has fallen so drastically, so its no longer worth the over-inflated prices it once was. It's the over saturation that have severely hurt the profitability of the industry.....but I'm not sure how everybody could not see that coming. The larger multi-million multi state operators are feeling the same hurt as the small independent growers. Nobody is really making money nationwide on any level anymore. The ones who are benefitting most from legal cannabis are the customers, who now can very affordably buy cannabis at a fraction of the cost it was even 5 years ago. In my opinion, these shifts should have all been expected when a once illegal crop becomes legal and is mass produced. Ultimately, cannabis should have never been the cash crop that it was, its prices have been manipulated and higher than they ever should have been, strictly due to it being illegal. For those who were around during those golden years, there was money to be made. Unfortunately for those still in the industry or trying to get in, the money just isn't there anymore due to the saturation and ease to grow cannabis. Genetics are also more widespread than ever, so its really easy to get your hands on some quality strains. The times have changed but the plant has stayed the same. Its really no different than growing another vegetable as a farmer....and basically, if your growing cannabis, your just a farmer.....and most farmers are not very wealthy. I feel for the old school growers the most. They have dedicated so much to this industry and have really helped this amazing plant flourish into what it is today. Coming up with evolving growing techniques, breeding amazing genetics we all can appreciate today, while putting their own freedom on the line. But for those opportunists, who think they can just simply come into the industry, regardless of gender or race, expecting that they are entitled to life changing wealth....I don't have much pity and they are just simply late to the party!

One of the better posts on YT regarding the subject. "if your growing cannabis, your just a farmer.....and most farmers are not very wealthy." illuminates the issue completely. Pot is subject to the same economic laws all farmers have struggled with for centuries-if you have a bumper crop, it's likely all the growers of the same crop did as well, driving the price down. I don't use, but had looked into buying stock in producers a couple of years ago and that dictum is what kept me from doing so. Throw in competition from the cartels and while I admire the tenacity of the legit growers, unless it's a passion, there are easier ways to make money. Good luck.

Very well stated. However, the grey-market middlemen are still doing ok due to wholesale prices tanking, so even though you can only charge $100 for top quality oz, you are only paying $50-$55 for that when you buy it by the pound. There will be a point though that even at the same margins, your local grey-market dealer will have a hard time paying the bills when a month's supply of there heavy users is only $100 and there margins are 30-40% on that. I am always amazed how much some people can smoke in a month, but there is a physical limit for how much a person can smoke. Most heavy users smoke 3-4 g a day, which results in them going through a quarter pound a month. If that QP is only $100 you need a lot more heavy users to pay the bills. Some dealers will survive due to them being able to move a lot of volume, but it will not be like the golden days (well besides risking your freedom etc.) of pre-legalization.

I live in LA County and walked into a dispensary in my city to buy edibles. I had not bought any in years. I bought two packages of edibles. Each pack had 10 candies with 10mg of thc each. Each pack was $20.00. When the girl rang my purchase up, I expected my bill with sales tax (10.25 in my city) of around $44.50 cents. My bill was almost $53.00. $40.00 for the edibles, about $4.10 in sales tax, the rest was local and state cannabis fees/taxes, on top of the sales tax. So basically I al most paid 30% tax on $40.00 worth of product. I cant imagine what these producers re experiencing trying to do this legally.

In Florida we call it “supporting your local growers”. Instead of refining the processes and making it a better more efficient experience the folks in Tallahassee want to keep taking steps in the other direction. My grinder hasn’t seen any oil in 5 years here. Not sure how they’re purging the flower and still having residual thc however I know it’s being done. You can see it in the color and crispness of the bud. So I say.... until the legal Eagles get it sorted “keep supporting your local growers “.....

Multiple issues. 1. Feds need to legalize cannabis and allow businesses in the industry have the same treatment from a tax and banking perspective as other businesses. 2. State and local taxes should be no different than other products. 3. It looked like some of the growers thought it would be easy or extra lucrative. It will end up being a low margin commodity like other farm products. That is the real world. 4. Regulations need to be simple and not favor large or small growers. Adding extra overhead because of the old cannabis fear mentality and extra taxes just makes the black market that much more successful.

I live in Minnesota. Only 2 legal medical cannabis companies and very few dispensaries. Patients of Minnesota's medical marijuana program say it is unaffordable and inaccessible. More than half of the patients who signed up for the program in 2017 did not re-enroll the next year. Prescription has to be renewed every year. The VA can not prescribe because federally illegal. I will not re-enroll. Producers are losing millions even with the high prices, saying tax structure hurts them. Patients who can't afford it either buy marijuana illegally or take addictive opioids that are covered by insurance. An ounce of flower can cost $480.00- Edibles 100 mg $30.00- No wax. The flower THC content is low, but higher CBD. Colorado recreational costs are about half the price of Minnesota. Medical marijuana is cheaper than the rec but is only available to CO. residents.

The problem is much simpler than described here. Two main problems must be fixed. The first one is allowing communities in LEGALIZED states to ban sales. The people of those communities want sales, but the town councils are made up of local business owners that don't want the competition for their alcohol and pharmaceutical sales. ---- The main problem is the completely wrong business model and pricing of legal marijuana. You don't need a whole building dedicated to marijuana sales. It will be logically end up being sold everywhere more harmful beer and wine are available. The biggest problem is the price. IT"S JUST A PLANT. After the collapse of the fraudulently enacted federal prohibition, national and global markets will quickly develop and the price will descend to its natural level a little higher than fine tobacco at $25 to $40 an ounce. Professional growers have admitted it costs about $6.00 an ounce to produce good quality, sun-grown marijuana. -- STOP THE PRICE GOUGING. -- Give us our Walmart Weed! You can also have your boutique stores if you do them right.

You don't know that everyone in a given community wants legal pot sales. If enough people in a city or county wanted legal weed, they'd vote out the governing councils. Welcome to representative government. For those that allow legal sales, do you really think that government isn't going to tax it to death? Look at the taxes on cigarettes....federal, state and local. Welcome to the real world of business dealing with government.

So is opium from a plant, and cocaine from cocoa leaves? Your point makes no sense. @@weirdshibainu -- With such flimsy excuses, you sound like one of the Greedy Sellers Against Legalization (GSAL). We have had to fight them in every state that has re-legalized marijuana. -- We know that 68 percent of ALL Americans want to completely end the fraudulently enacted marijuana prohibition. 75 percent want to leave it up to the states and more than 90 percent want medical marijuana. We have no problem with a community deciding to opt out of sales, but it must be done by a vote of all the citizens, NOT by town councils who have conflicting interests. as described. -- We have 19 states and D.C. that have completely legalized marijuana, and we'll have more in two days with the elections. All states are happy with the re-legalization. - It's absurd to suggest that marijuana is the one product in the world that can't be sold legally, especially when it's FAR less harmful than alcohol or tobacco.
