I remember when I was talking to the recruiter in HS. I thought I'd love to jump swim mud guns just love it all! I've been shooting since I was 8 and swimming since I was 4 I just knew I'd be a Marine and when I had the chance to be a Recon Marine I jumped at the chance and when I was given the chance for Selection in 06 I put my heart and soul into becoming a Raider until I retired in 015. Joining and becoming a Marine was the greatest thing i ever accomplished. There is a common bond with other Marines. Being told that every Marine is your brother and sister is what makes it different than other services. God Bless our Corps and Semper Fi

Rah. As a millennial it's definitely the best life changing decision I ever made. Changed the entire trajectory of my life, removed preconceived notions and prepared me for the real world. The one thing we all miss about the Corps is not the daily PT, field ops, f*ck f*ck games, rifle qual, etc. it's the band of brothers we bonded during our time.

Joining the Army was the best decision I ever made. Making it to the 1st Ranger Battalion was and still is the proudest achievement of my life. At the ripe old age of 50, those years were the best of my existence. Every man or woman that served their country deserves respect.

I’m former Navy enlisted and a retired Air Force officer. I was never a Marine but I have great appreciation and admiration for them. They get some things so right: every member is a rifleman first regardless if specialty, winning is what counts in combat, and probably the best dress uniform of all the services. S!

This guy retired a year after I went in. I had a 1st Sgt in 2nd Recon 1Sgt Mulligan also a Vietnam vet. Never got married no kids. He used to tell us "you bastards are my children" the man was tough as nails. I think he retired in 87. I am 54 and still look back at what a great influence 1st Sgt Mulligan had on not only myself but all the young Marines that where under his leadership.

Lost my dad almost 2 weeks ago. He didn't have a showing and he didn't want a preacher though he did have faith. All we did for him was honor his final request which was to only have military honors. So we had that two days ago. I watch this stuff because it reminds me of him and I couldn't be prouder of him. He was so humble. He was in con thien, khe sanh, and hue city as a United States Marine. His company was alpha at the beginning of tet offense. There is a book available for anyone interested in his story. It's called Marines Under Fire by Kenneth Jordan. God bless everyone.

My father is a retired E-9 Marine, who served 30yrs. And was with the 1st Reacon/1st Radio Battalion. He did 3 tours in Nam. And in his mid 80s, is still a badass. He also my hero. Semper Fi!!!

I just recently graduated from bootcamp last wednesday and there was a force recon reunion going on in the hotel that I was staying at before flying home. These men are some of the greatest Ive ever met. They took me in with open arms and fed me ans treated me as one of their own. An older gentleman even gave me my first coin. Moral of the story is these men are the best of the best and it was a great experience hearing some of the stories they had to tell

I am a military bratt and have so much respect for our military men and women. They don’t live the lap of luxury and have to move every 2-3 years. Your extended family you maybe see every 5-7 years. If you are stationed overseas you are rarely going to see extended family. The entire family sacrifices so much to SERVE our country. We should salute every single one.

Joined the Corps in 69 with one and only one goal-to be a Recon Marine. Recruiter said fastest way was to be a grunt first so I enlisted to be a grunt. I mark the beginning of my life as the day I earned the 8651 MOS. Nothing else matters, not then not now. Every time I hit a rough spot in life I remembered I am first and foremost a Recon Marine and can handle anything. People have trouble understanding why I am so intense. I know exactly why.

As a former Marine at the age of 45 in 05 I wanted to go back in the Marine Res. But they said I was to old so I joined the guard, the next day THE Marines called me back after reviewing my stellar marine record! But to late I was bummed out! So I came to be a scout at 46 a scout Instructor at 46 and then Iraq as lead scout! Then on to Afghanistan as a Combat advisor. That was the best gig yet!! So when I came back from Afghanistan and earning the bronze star I requested to go back to Afghanistan. But during my med check up we found out I had 20 separate injury from my tours! And I was medvact out of Iraq on my 12 month there with a head injury but any way they canceled my orders and I started my med process and ended up 100% disabled!! And I also helped train up the DEA at fort lewis..but I ended up being retired at the young age of 54 which I did not want to do! I started to fight it but my best friend the state SgtMaj..told me my luck was running out so I left and have missed it every since! But after what Biden did I no longer miss it!! But my training as a Marine made me a very highly decorated Scout!! I love my country and it is killing me to see what is happening to are once great country and military to be turned into a weak military due to weak woke leadership!! 73 now means the man was born in 1948. Joining at 17 means he was a recruit in 1965. A year for Recon school and he wasn't headed to Vietnam until it was a real war!

Well actually I’m a 73 years former Vietnam Marine, buy born in 1949. Attended Boot Camp in 1967, at 18 years of age, and reached ‘Nam in 1967. Every phase of our training was cut in order to get us to ‘Nam yesterday. Isn’t great to feel wanted?

It won't be if they persist with the fairy integration program. Look at the Marines history towards the end of the Vietnam war, when conscripts were brought in, it was an instant failure in the bush. I am a Boer, from South Africa, ex SADF ( 1986; 87 ), when we were beating off communist Angolans, Cubans, Russians, and hostile neighbours, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. I met a few Marines, have been to Arlington, I love and respect America, and the Patriots. I have read the Marine history. DON'T INTEGRATE!

I am an Air Force veteran 1972-1978 and have always had the greatest respect for marines. You all have a special place owned only by you. One of my cousin's son is one of the marines involved in the august bombing in Afghanistan. Thankfully he was not physically injured but he did attend the funerals of two of his brothers at arms. My son just finished his 10 day leave after SOI and is now at the fleet. It has absolutely transformed him. It enhanced his good traits and squashed the bad ones. He's strong physically, but kind and courteous. He decided to fly over the weekend in his service A and he reported widespread pouring of support from people, especially retired Marines. As for the females I do ask him how they did in SOI. For the Infantry MOS group, there were 2 with one drop. The one who made it looks to be a real athlete and did succeed where dozens of males didn't so there's some overlap for sure. My son is 6'3" 180 fit and strong so he was able to hump the 80 lbs of gear 20k as expected. A 125lb female Marine doing the same thing has to have a lot of heart and want that MOS badly. Just my $.02 as a parent. PS thanks for the videos. It helped my son make his decision to join the Corps.

My step dad is 74 two tours in Vietnam Nam khe sahn hill 881n. Yes he was in battle of khe sahn. Tour in photo bi, sorry don't if spelled it right. He has been fighting cancer for about 5years now. About 5'6". Still a force too be reckoned with. THANK YOU ALL FOR SERVICE.

Don’t waste a moment of your time. Start running, doing pull-ups, and push-ups, and whatever other exercise your recruiter tells you is now a big thing in boot camp. Walk a couple of miles a day in boots to toughen your feet, and avoid blisters. Blisters are extremely painful when forced to march on them. Also walking those miles will prevent the night time leg cramps we experienced during our first month of boot came. Memorize your 11 General Orders, and be able to execute right and left face, about face, and all the other stationary drill moments perfectly. Get to a Marine Junior ROTC, or Marine Reserve unit and become perfect in executing the Manuel of arms. Believe me, each of these will take more than a day to nail down. If you cannot find a Marine Corps contact, try Army. Be prepared! This will save tons of stress, and pain! Ask your recruiter what else you can do.

Upon graduating Boot Camp in the airport on my way home was the first time someone called me sir. The Marines truly turned me into a man. Easily the hardest and best years of my life. My father also served in Force Recon in Viet Nam. 5'6, 120lbs M60 gunner. Held a cross country track record for over 50 years at his high school. They gave him the "hog" to slow him down.

At 77 I still remember the Force Recon Marines doing pull-ups on ropes stretched between two fifty-foot water towers thinking they were nuts :) I also remember they used to sort of kidnap some of the men who were serving guard duty scared the mess out of those poor Marines :)

I joined the USMC July 1965. Got an aviation guarantee, after boot camp MCRD S.D a year or so fire control radar school. Dream sheet all three requests Viet Nam, Corps helpful. Assigned to MCAS Chu Lai RVN. Put in VMFA 542 An f4 outfit. Extended my tour once tried again but they said no. Sent to MCAS Beauford, pulled strings and went back to WesPac. Got out and used my electronics to work on 2 way radios and highly classified USAF (ugh) programs. Had a brain bleed about three years ago and boot camp training prepated me to kkep on keepin on. The Corps is a life long journey SEMPER FI!

O Man this story is so much like my dad's !! Broken home, hated school, was into girl's, beer !! He went in the Corps in 58 went into Battalion Recon, then did get into Force Recon ! He did 3 tours in Vietnam 62-63, 65-66, 68-69 simply amazing !! A co. 3rd recon ! In 2002 I had the HONOR of going to one of his Reunions where I met 7 Medal of Honor Recipients ! I also learned so much about the old man that he never talked about ! O ya he can still wear his original Dress Blues ! Such a honor to have been raised by a man of this caliber, yes it was rough at times but it help make me the man I am today !

When I was in 3rd recon in okinawa on camp schwab our marine corps ball back in 2011 on camp hansen we had a 70something year old force recon sgtmaj join the ball and he got up and had a speech about recon bn and one of his combat stories in vietnam. The man was a straight badass and I'll never forget him

I hear that same comment from a lot of soldiers, it doesn't seem real until real bullets are being fired at you. I remember an interview of a British soldier in the Falklands war, he said it felt like a training exercise until the guy next to him got shot.

I think second Force was already stood up before the RVN deployment in 65. I know Colonel Wes Fox was doing lock outs from subs and doing HALO Jumps in 64 or earlier some of them in West Pac. They may have ramped up 1st and 3rd Force Companies, but since Force Recon is a Recon Element assigned to Fleet Marine Force as opposed to Recon Bns assigned to Division level there were Recon elements at FMF Prior to RVN.

My dad did his first deployment in 62 or 63 from Thailand. My mom said he was a frogman, but I don’t know what a marine frogman was. He was killed in 67.

MCTU-1 became 1st Force Recon in 1957 so I'm thinking that he's referring to a war-time ramp up in training for filling out the Units committed to Vietnam ( 1st & 3rd Force) as well as training replacement Marines since Force Recon Marines and teams were also seconded out to MACV-SOG and the CIA.

She says prior to going, he went to a frogman school and did other trainings, but nothing was listed on his records which took over a year to get when I requested them. It did show he was over there with an expeditionary force in either 62 or 63 for 3 months. It was either Laos or Thailand. He went back a few times and disappeared in February of 67, then declared killed in June 67. But from the time he disappeared In February, to June when he was declared dead, he was listed AWOL. Yet the Marine core wanted him buried at Arlington with military honors.

Horror Writer Sounds like your Dad was with the Kennedy Era MACV. Since he was Scuba Qualed he may have worked doing beach surveys and Harbor Surveys which were at the time a CIA thing . MACV as a whole was heavily used by the CIA especially for " across the fence" type Ops .

I graduated Parris Island June 4th 1986, President Reagan was there that day, we got to hear a speech by him moments after graduation. I became a 0351 and in 87 I got to meet General Gray who was the Commandant at that time and the Sargent Major of the Corp too, forget his name at this moment. Now when you are in their presence it is something you don't forget! We were doing a static display at The Basic School and I was on the SMAW (shoulder fired multi purpose assault weapon) the General had a big chaw of tobacco in and I recall him spitting and I laughed inside cause I was wanting to put a dip in myself. Lt. Colonel Shores was there too, tall Marine must've been 6 ft 4. Always wondered if he made Full bird Colonel or General maybe. He was a great officer to us enlisted guys in EI company. army basic and infantry training changed my life. In sixteen weeks i met and got to work with people i never would have met had i not joined the army in 1971. i ended up at FT. Myer in the Old Guard, an experience i would not trade for anything.

Yeah, when I was a recruiter 1980 to '83, if I recruited a WM, she didn't even count on my quota. My quota was 4 high school educated MALES per month. No females were listed there. We were astounded that the population of women had doubled in the last 4 years. Consider that doubling meant going from 1% to 2% of the Corps population.

The things that Recon marines did back then are insane. Body retrievals, parachuting behind lines, co-ops with the CIA, they weren't just doing reconnaissance, they did everything

I was about 20 when I went to Nam as a Navy Corpsman (HM3) w/the Marines, and was in country for eleven months before being wounded in a rocket attack (RPG). Navy boot camp, and my combat experience, formed the person I am now, although @ 75 years old & handicapped I’m not sure how tough I am anymore. Enjoy your videos.

I joined the navy in March 64 as soon as I turned 17. Same story... doing bad in school and needed my GED. Hospital Corpsman. Did a total of 25 months in Nam. Three Purple Hearts. Became a private contractor for about 12 years and made it through college and law school. Been a lawyer for 42 years now.

The Drill Instructor in the opening scene was my Senior Drill Insructor at Parris Island in 1965. His name was Staff Sergeant Weeks. He was from Boston Massachusetts and his MOS was Aviation Mechanic. He was tough but fair. A good man.

My Uncle, John Willis, had no training before going over in 67. He got picked for 1st Force Recon on the way over to Vietnam, and he eventually went to Scuba School in the Philippines.

Reminds me of my old mate here in Australia, ex-SAS Vietnam vet who were called the Phantoms of the Jungle by the enemy. Still fit as a thoroughbred and strong as an ox and deadly stealthy. When I first got to know him through our church, he invited me over for an early morning run and he lives on a farm/ranch.. As I pulled up to his gate, he "ambushed" my vehicle blocking it between his vehicle and the gate and before I knew it he was at my car window at the blind spot.. Honestly the man came out of nowhere.. Just a very small example.. Hence the name I guess.

My dad was the first paraplegic of the Vietnam war. He went in June of 65. He was an adviser to the south. He already had 17 and a half years. He was going to take his 20 and retire. After 2 tours in Korea and then nam. He deserved it. 6 months later after getting state side the President ( Johnson) called him at letterman hospital in San Francisco to thank him for his service and wished him. He also told him if he needed anything he or his office could do, call them anytime my dad was airborne. 101 st, 82nd, 187, in Korea he was general Westmorelands driver. He saw action in Korea and nam and that’s why I call my dad hero to this day.

I'm sure women had fought against men in ancient battles, but generally speaking, men still have the advantage due to physical strength and the ability to focus on one task at a time. This is why most armies, from the beginning of time till now, are mostly comprised of men. Meanwhile, women can create a human being then squeeze out that human being, and even produce food for that human being. Both are awesome in different ways.

@@krdiaz8026 Marines serve in many non-combat roles. We don't say a bulk fuel Marine isn't really a Marine because he's pumping gas. Does he need to do his 20 pull ups to be able to pump that gas? No. We set the PFT standards to keep us looking as a Marine should physically. If a female can't do the 20 pulls ups with the bulk fuel MOS, should you, I or anyone else give a rats ass? No. If she does her job, meets her requirements and passes bootcamp, she's a Marine. Don't be a dumbass and say you have to have the same PFT standards in order to be equal to a male Marine. Life is more than black and white. We need them in the Corps and they rise to the occasion and do their job as well as anyone else.

Man, I saw love in your eyes Jameson, roger that. Always forward, brother. I served ten years in the Army infantry. I was a drug user, a lost soul, just drifting around. And September 11th happened, and I signed my paperwork two weeks later. I remember telling the recruiter, hand me a rifle and show me the bad guy, because I'm going to kick him in the nuts. And just like that, I joined the infantry lol. The military saved my life, I just bought an office building for my civilian business. I owe everything to the Army.

Had a recon gunny in Paris Island 1968 .While in line to shots this drill Sgt. Suddenly took his hat off,leaped into the air ,landed on his finger tips and pumped out 100 push ups. Got up ,put hat back on and continued like nothing happened.Yes a true Marine. Semper Fi.

I have known 3 people who were Marines. My late stepfather, Kenny,C. was a Sgt during Korea and he drove a Duece and half from the rear to the Front ; his back got all tore up driving on this awful roads. I think he assisted with Frozen Chosin evacuations. My Mom's late brother was a Corpman and was in the early days of the Vietnam War. Our former preacher was a retired SSGT and platoon leader.He. served in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He landed off Kuwait and engaged the Republican Guard by a false amphibious assault landing. Never served in the USMC, but you guys are tough ! I served in the USAF for 6 years. SEMPI -FI always ! HOORAH !

My Father took a similar route ( Jail or the Military) and graduated in 1954 from Paris Island. His DIs were all tough WWII vets. He received a broken foot and a concussion from being struck (two separate incidents) by DIs smashing him with his M1 on his face and top of his foot during formation , etc. My Dad was a career Gunny who retired as a Combat Engineer after 20 years…2 tours in Viet Nam (severely injured both tours by RPG attack/small arms fire) and tough as they come. He said boot camp back then was extremely intense, and DIs were very physical.

At 17 we are retrained into extremely survival people, as special forces we never worried much about the jugheads when we ran into them they were on and up to it. You cannot forget combat and are always ready

One of my most objective mentors in my life was a Marine. A Force Recon retired Captain, William J. Murphy. Bill, fought in Korea and Vietnam. I have lost contact with Bill over the years. I am a U.S. Air Force veteran. 1976- 1982. Bill help me to listen to others, stand up for what you believe is right. Leadership is by example, as you train or drill in life, will define you on the battlefield or in the workplace. One can say through life, as well. I enjoy your videos. I was born in Sept of 65, and growing up, I had a Pacific Island Marine John Hunt to our right next door neighbor, and Howard Childress, an Army Infantryman that went in the War in Jan of 44, and was installed into France, 2 weeks after the Normandy invasion, at Normandy..during the troop buildup. My Dad was younger and served in the Navy during Korea. Both neighbors had awards, service medals, etc , but never talked about it till I asked them questions. That was just the way they were...they both saw horrific actions. Mr. Childress started working with crews that cleaned out tanks that had been shot all to hell. He helped cleaned bodies and body parts out of tanks. He said the Sherman's that were hit with the "Tank Fist", although they were penetrated by thin streams of molten steel, just cut body's in 2, arms. Legs, etc. The ones that had been blasted by Tiger 88's, and Panther 75s, were just body parts everywhere. They found heads, that were blown off the bodies, literally stuck somehow, yo the hatches, that had been blown off the tanks, and were up to hundreds of feet away...like they'd been welded to them, and had to peel them off the hatches..Mr Hunt was at Pelelui and Okinawa. He was in Okinawa when the bombs were dropped, and was sent to Japan after the surrender. Course neither one claimed PTSD, oth drank heavily,, and had horrendous nightmares.

I served a day attached with a team of 1st Force Recon guys on a swift water rescue gig up the De Luz river back in the day ... super great guys ... then in New Mexico at RS Albuquerque, I worked for a major who was a career Force Recon officer ... super famous guy in the community and a "quad body" ... we made 100 consecutive months of mission when I was there ... Force Recon guys are bat **** crazy, but man, super good dudes!

My dad served in the Army in Korea. He rarely talked about it. When he passed away and they carefully folded up that flag and handed it to my mom and did the gun salute for some reason that’s when it really hit me what he actually had gone through.

My grandfather joined in 65 too. He and his fronsteater were killed in Laos in 1968 in an F-4D Phantom.
